I wouldn't hate Tyler Perry as much if he didn't have a Monopoly on black entertainment right now. The only time you can see a film or series with more than one black character, that's a main character, and makes it to the end credits, it's a Tyler Perry production.

I think it's hilarious when Hollywood reports his earnings and box office grosses as if it came out of nowhere. Perry tapped the one ignored market in entertainment: The Black Market.

Sadly, there is no stopping this guy; Black evangelical women love his tired, bible thumping, border-line minstrel, low-budget crap.

It's pretty easy for people that aren't black to say, "why you mad? Change the channel!", when they have so many other entertainment options to choose from that have identifiable characters/situations.

I can't hate on Perry for making his money since he outsources nothing and does everything within his own company but, damn, I hate his product.

Haven't seen "The Help" but I've heard good things. It seems to get a cast of more than one Black person, It has to be a period picture with the air of "we shall over come". There's going be another film with a mostly black cast called "Red Tails" that's also a period picture. Period Movies are great, but writers don't write roles for black actors to play regular black people

Love & Basketball, Best Man, The Wood, Brown Sugar. Remember those movies? Good times.

i was disappointed JJ Abrams' UNDERCOVERS wasn't p-up by NBC - funny enough, the male star, Boris Kodjoe, is a Tyler Perry alum.

You beat me to it. I suppose every culture has some media that appeals to their uneducated/ignorant/whatever population. What's more telling, I think, is that the average white guy who isn't into Foxworthy would just dismiss it and think nothing of it for the most part. In contrast, the average black guy who isn't into Perry dismisses it while also feeling associated with the comedy and embarrassed by it.

Is this a result of white people's perception that all blacks are the same? Or black people's own perception of themselves? Or... or... uhh I don't know--it's probably a combination of all factors. I hope my racial turn dooms this thread to the D&D!

Soon Every Black actor will be a Tyler Perry alum.

I was really pulling for Undercovers even though it was straight garbage. I really feel like they set that show up to fail so they would have an excuse to say, "Welp, 2 black leads can't make it on network TV, we tried".

Steve McQueen. Not American but he's a British video artist who's made two very good films in Hunger and the upcoming Shame. Both staring Magneto Michael Fassbender.

I don't think northern whites (or most whites from a major city) feel any connection to the stereotypes Foxworthy portrays. Tyler Perry intentionally uses black stereotypes that offend all black people.

I think the most annoying thing about the Tyler Perry situation is that it proves the masses just don't care to see blacks doing anything other than shooting each other, shooting up, wearing a wig, or some other stereotypical buffoonery. Black dramas are made all the time but they tend to be low budget (with all the problems that come with that) and end up buried on one of those "urban" networks where no one will see it. If you wanna see Tyler Perry disappear, white people, show us that you're willing to go see movies with a black male lead that doesn't have him dressed as woman dancing around and shooting at people. And no, you can't put Will Smith in every single one of them.

I think the OP's point is that if a black person wants to watch a show with a predominantly black cast he is essentially stuck with Tyler Perry. If he changes the channel there are no other options unless he finds a Cosby rerun. If a white person doesn't like Big Bang Theory, he can watch Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Rec, Community, Glee, Raising Hope, New Girl, HIMYM or any one of a number of shows featuring predominantly white casts.
