We give Pakistan, Billions in aid. They are upset OBL got dead in their backyard. What do they do for us? This isn't a political thing. I am not here to throw elbows in debate or make a comeback into D&D like thumbs or something...no ulterior meaning behind the question ..I just want to know why the hell we give so much? I mean it happens irregardless of the politics or party...

someone please tell me a doomsday scenario where the U.S. stops giving away free money in the billions to countries like Pakistan? - How would it help us or hurt us?

    thanks

Well, if you want to butt into other people's business, and require their permission, then you kind of have to persuade them to do so. Wouldn't this seem reasonable to you?

I mean, you don't just go to your neighbor's house and just mess around with them without giving some incentive, right? What they do with that incentive is their business. But if you don't give them something, they can just tell you to go F yourself.

They could make things very unpleasant for us in Afghanistan, the vast majority of supplies for NATO arrive at the port in Karachi and then travel through Pakistan. A lot of high level terrorist also hide out in the pakistani tribal areas, so having their government's (or parts of it) cooperation is beneficial if the US wants to operate there. And they have nuclear weapons, so keeping them stable would be desirable.

All good points, but would us simply giving them some money change all of that?

In an effort to influence political policy in foreign nations as a means of maintaining our bloated overseas presence.

As always, the money is only useful if it trickles down.

I heard a lot of rumors (can anyone confirm?) that a lot of charity money people send there is subject to corruption.

Rather than re-hash arguments I've already made in another thread, I'll be brief:

-The US has multiple military bases on Pakistans soil

-We carry out military attacks from those bases to attack militants and suspected militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan

-Military attacks are often carried out without notifying Pakistan's military/intelligence allies (likely for justifiable reasons)

-American diplomatic/national priveleges are enjoyed in Pakistan

-The Pakistani military, although containing factions supporting militant groups, is also fighting militant groups and has lost a disproportionately larger number of troops in the war on terror when compared to US troop fatalities

To add a few notes (and hopefully some perspective):

-Pakistans population is ~170 million. Iraq's was 25 million at the time we invaded. Afghanistans was about ~30 million with a rudimentary infrastructure in place.

-Pakistan's military is significantly more developed than either of those nations, and hosts a military of 610,000 men with an additional half a million reservists. At the height of the Afghan war, the Talibans military force was estimated at 15,000.

-Pakistan is a nuclear nation and is a major ally of China

So yeah, there are mutually beneficial reasons for the US to give Pakistan aid, and we should consider it as it is, an alliance of convenience and nothing more.

To be quite honest, if you give someone money for a service, you almost never get a say in how they spend their money. What they do with the money you give them is their business.

Yes, I know technically speaking we're giving "economic aid". But it's not like anyone truly believes that. It's a freaking bribe. America has never cared whether the money goes into feeding the poor. As long as we can establish our presence we'll hand out the cash. The whole helping out their economy BS is just that, pure BS. It's to make it sound like we're helping them and not ourselves.
