On the BBC, I heard an Iranian born professor of ME studies at some American university claim that from the moment they were arrested the Iranians have been trying to exchange them for people like Shahrazad Mir Gholikhan, who was arrested for trying to smuggle a whole bunch of embargoed night vision goggles out of the US to Iran, and that may have been the motive for grabbing them in the first place. The ransom was paid as a consolation prize for the Iranians to give up the exchange plans and save face.

Regardless, they were foolish to be there in the first place, no matter how pretty the flowers were.

I know this isn't exactly what you are thinking of, but there have been some credible allegations that the US has in the past done that with white, non-farsi speaking, non-documented special forces types who are helicoptered just across the border, and sent to run around, reconnoiter border positions, and generally gather military intelligence from within Iran.

Please tell me you're kidding. Trust me, we have the folks and the technology to do that without getting some bumbling American tourists to take on the job. After two needless years behind bars in theocratic Iran, a ransom is paid and they are released.

Frankly, I am unsure about whether or not they're spies now. I can see it both ways.

But what maybe continues to have me thinking they're spies is how well they've held up in Iranian prison. People have been in those prisons a lot less, and received a lot more damage than these 3 have over 2 years.

In any case, I'm glad they were released. Just a useless distraction from the big picture between these two countries.

Unless you know them personally I don't see how you can be so sure that they aren't "the folks". When I said they don't look like hiking type of people I was joking, just as I was when I called them spies. Fact is it is hard to say either way, they wouldn't exactly be spies if everyone knew they were spies. BTW I don't think technology alone would give you the intelligence you need to invade a country.

It is not hard to say at all, because it is easy to look at them, and the circumstances and see they were not spies.

If they were spies, Iran would have not let them go.

The Iranian government sucks balls, if somehow their people could just get rid of those idiots, the country and the world would be better off.

    The Iranian people deserve better.

Not hard to tell by a "look at them" and their "circumstances", wtf does that even mean? The US probably has tons of spies in Iran, they are the 'terrorist' state after all. I don't think keeping these guys held in an Iran prison was the best option for Iran anyway. These guys got a lot of international press as being innocent "bumbling" tourists, since Iran does play the image game, this act of "mercy" made them look innocent in some peoples eyes. BTW, I'm sure your love for the IRanian government is keeping you from being objective.

If they're spies then we need to fire the entire leadership of the CIA. Sending white people who don't speak a word of Farsi to gather crucial intelligence seems like a brilliant idea. Kudos to the CIA. I can see my tax money is going to the right people.

The fact that nobody would expect a white non-farsi speaking spy means its a brilliant cover. I would say kudos to whoever in the CIA thought of this one.

This is pretty much the same logic that says that the fact that there's no evidence that anyone but Oswald shot Kennedy/ the WTC was blown up proves how dastardly the conspiracy was, because The Real Masterminds covered up all the evidence.

I don't think you understand the restrictions/difficulties of travel within this sensitive region. No Farsi speaking Iranian looking people would venture into that region, you'd have to be an uninformed buffoon to consider it. Hence the need for that image....
