And belly button cheese. But seriously folks, I was watching the new star wars movie. And it is cheezy as all hell. The movie is 90% computer animated or whatever, and it just plain sucks. The villains suck, the heros suck, the only compelling character is Obi-Wan. Why were the first 3 so much cooler?
Character consistency and interaction. Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia, R2, C3PO, and Darth Vader were all present in all three movies and they all have interactions from movie to movie. All 3 movies have a feel to them that you can only get with recurring charcters. The new movies are more about the journey of Anikin to the darkside and it's real hard to get attached to his character knowing how he ends up. Thats my take.
The new ones just don't seem as real. I hate all that computer-animated crap. It's almost like a cartoon.
In a nutshell: DIALOGUE. A team of 10,000 monkeys with typewriters could write more compelling stuff than the following: "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth." "Peeeyou-sa!" "... I've heard you talk about midichlorians. I've been wondering: What are midichlorians?" "Will I ever see you again?" "What does your heart tell you?" "Ani? My goodness, you've grown!" "So have you. Grown more beautiful... for a senator, I mean." Now compare the above lines to these quotes: "I love you..." "... I know." "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." "Never tell me the odds!" "... Who's scruffy looking?" "We don't have time to discuss this in a committee." "I am not a committee!" The old trilogy clearly had better dialogue (and one-liners and jokes), which, in turn, greatly enhanced the characters and their interaction with one another. So... Old Skool Star Wars: 1 Newfangled CGI-happy Star Wars: 0
If Yoda and Darth Maul weren't so cool, You know these movies would suck even more. Still, I really hated Anakin in this movie, He nothing more than a stupid angry punk, He made the movie un fun.
Agreed 100% with both yours and Freak's assessment (as amazing as CGI can be, it still has a sterile, inorganic quality). I also think the new series was hurt by having Anakin be so young in the beginning. You really can't do any character development with a elementary-school-aged kid (especially when the actor is as awful as Jake Lloyd was). It would have been smarter to start him at his Episode II age. Actually, in the original script, Han Solo told Leia "I love you too." Fortunately, Harrison Ford had a better grip on the character of Han Solo than Lucas, and the director (Kasdan) was wise enough to keep this little bit of improvised dialogue.
Ya'll ain't bullshi**ing, dudes. "Attack of the Clones" at least improved on "The Phantom Menace," but that's like saying "Friday the 13th Part II" was better than its predecessor. George has a tin ear for dialogue, he seems emotionally disconnected, and, while watching his films, you know he's envisioning the games that he'll release to coincide with the movies. I mean, after the Jedi fight the machines in the "Gladiator" rip-off scene, why are none of them sweaty, dirt-stained, gulping for breath? Oh, I forgot: they're using the Farce. (no typo) When Anakin was delivering the aforementioned "sand" line, I was actually staring at the tops of my shoes out of empathy for the actors, who, like everyone else in the Star Wars empire, must suck George Lucas' ass because he gave them work. I really wish George would hire any of a thousand starving writers to come up with dialogue less painful. We can only be thankful that computer technology in the 70s and 80s wasn't any better. George actually had to make likeable characters. Also, he allowed other directors to take over in Episodes V and VI. That helps. Rhetorical question #653: How can you turn Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, and Hayden Christensen (go rent "Life as a House") into bad actors? When your best actor is Yoda, you know you've got a problem.
All he needs is some good writers. Seriously. Everything else is great. Te characters are great. The story is great. The themes are great. The dialogue sucks! And the actors would be great if they had something to say. What was so great was that all the characters in the fourth episode didn't get along. They just kind of fell together. And that's what you felt through the dialogue. And I loved it. They were flawed and I liked that. The characters are still flawed, but you don't feel it thru the dialogue like you did in episode 4.
Mmhmm. Hmmhuhm. Insult me you do. Angry you are. Fear becomes anger. Anger becomes hate. Hate becomes bad writing. Bad writing turns to special effects. Special effects become money. Mmhmm. Hmm. Toys and games and DVDs, money also they become. Chumps you are, as you watch and purchase and hate. Yoda, Sincerely I type.
OMG!!!! B-Bob, I think I dropped my spleen. Ouch, I can't stop laughing, I think I'm going to wake my roommate up.
Well, I did think Attack of the Clones looked very good on DVD. I thought the CGI actually looked a little better on DVD than it did on the big screen in DLP. But I had forgotten how painfully bad much of the dialogue was (and the acting often came across as bad, though I think that was because of the lines rather than the talent of the actors).
When you are a kid you dont care about dialogue, you just care about the movie being cool. I thought Ghostbusters was a great movie when I was a kid. Have you seen Ghostbusters lately? That movie is horrible. That being said, the new Star Wars (Episode I & II) movies are not as good as the old ones (Episodes IV, V, and VI). Someone hit it on the head when they said that it kind of lessens the blow knowing that he turns into Vader but who cares. Can you imagine how crappy it would have been if when you saw Empire you already knew that Vader was Lukes father? I think that Lucas is in a no win situation with a lot of people because expectations are too high and nothing will be good enough for everyone. I also think character development is not as strong and there arent as many characters to care about. My son is 20 years younger than me so these movies are coming out in about the same time in his life as the old ones came out for me. He loves them. He would much rather watch Phantom than the old ones. I have to admit though that I really liked Clones. When I was younger, Jedi was my favorite. Empire is probably my favorite today because it is darker. I cant wait for III to come out. I am crossing my fingers that he makes III PG-13 at least so that we have some true ass kicking but I am not holding my breath.
are you kidding? that movie's actually gotten funnier as i've gotten older. top 20 of all-time. listen... do you smell something?
