I remember listening to Lauryn Hill's "Killing Me Softly" cover while driving Mom's Volvo to Cici's when they opened up in Baytown.
After high school I quit my job at the Waffle House and was looking for another job. The manager at the local Pizza Inn gave me 1,000 flyers to put on people's door. I went out over 3 days during the summer heat and hung every single one of those flyers on the door of seveal apartment complexes. Two days later I recieved a call from the manager: I was hired.
The most notable thing I remember about Pizza Inn was their "New York Style Pizza," not because we ever ordered it, but because the commercials had that "Cool-Cool-Kitty" song that I have never heard any where else before or since for the last 25 years.
Candalarie's is pretty good but it's pretty damn pricy. There are better options where I live in Austin but in Houston, you could say Candalarie's is the best
I remember that commercial!! I want to say there was a "Charles in Charge" syndication promo that used the Cool Cool Kitty song too
One summer in college I had to manage a Pizza Inn. There was this guy we had, he stood out there in the heat holding a sign with our lunch special on it. I asked him to come in, gave him a wooden post, had him staple that sign to the post, then go out and put it where he was standing. When he got back in I asked him to turn in his uniform, informed him that he'd been replaced by a post.
The last time I think I saw a pizza from Pizza Inn was back in the 80s when I was in high school. There were these undisciplined (i.e. loser) brothers I hung out with at their parents' house often because their parents were terrible at parenting and we were allowed to party at his house with his parents home. So, it became our party hangout. Anyway, I head over there on Thanksgiving Day after eating my meal at home. What do they do for their Thanksgiving meal? They order like seven large pizzas from Pizza Inn so they don't have to do any work to prepare a proper meal. They don't even eat around the table. They just eat pizza all over the house leaving half eaten pizza everywhere. The house was so disgusting that cockroaches were well fed and abundant. Now, every time I think of Pizza Inn...I think of that scenario of a family who just didn't care about much and couldn't even do a proper Thanksgiving Day meal. It was pretty funny at the time. Obviously, I never forgot it and never ate Pizza Inn after that. But, I do have some fonder memories of eating at the Pizza Inn in Clear Lake up near the bowling alley I believe on Bay Area Blvd. That was our main Pizza Inn back in the day. There was also a Pizza Hut a couple of stores down from that which had a pretty bad reputation for quality. I wonder if either of them are still there?
Was this on FM 2234? I can't remember if that was "Pizza Inn" or "Pizza Hut".... always got the two mixed up.
Correct, near Cartwright Road. It was Pizza Inn. Pizza Hut has always been trash to me. That area has really gone downhill. Used to be a driving range across the street I went to.
After reading all the stuff people were posting about the one on Mangum Road, I checked it out earlier today....it was God awful. Thank you very much CF.
Speaking of pizza, WHY DID GATTI'S CHANGE THEIR SAUSAGE!!?!?!? They had by far the best sausage pizza, in fact it's the only place I would even touch sausage, and they ruined it a little while back and got the same that every other chain uses.
But that vehicle registration office is top notch. You'd think that Zimmermann telegram actually panned out.
Anybody on the East Side remember going to Spanky's at Gulfgate? Went there for the first time in years on a whim with another friend who lived off of Broadway and it was pure nostalgia.
