another point, which may explain (maybe not) some of the (non)reaction from the candidates, if you've ever been on stage, particularly in a large acoustically live auditorium such as the one in orlando, it's very difficult to understand what may be happening in the audience.

first, there are bright lights in your eyes, so you simply can't see past the moderators, who are also lit. 2nd, the questions, and your responses, are amplified, further distorting your perceptions of any other noises in the room. 3rd, in this instance, there was a massive, and i suspect massively distracting, Hi-def screen hanging down in the middle of the auditorium, which further obscures the audience.

and lastly, you're trying your damnedest to concentrate on what's being asked, and how your opponents are responding. you may hear a ruckus in the hall, but it may not be immediately apparent what it's about. if you stop to listen, you've killed your own momentum. it's a very difficult environment in which to "perform."

No one acknowledged Mr. Hill's service or called Santorum out on his nonsense response, either. Was there something about the stage design that make the other candidates unable to hear the soldier or Santorum?

Strongly agree, I feel that jumping to the 'sex' response is extremely sophomoric and juvenile.

Can't wait for Bill Maher to talk about it tonight. :)

If every single one of these candidates gets THAT flustered by lights and stages and TV screens, why would I want to give ANY of them the chance to **** up as POTUS -- undoubtedly, a "very difficult environment in which to 'perform'"?

The really sad thing here is that Obama's gonna waltz into a second term because the adherents of Tea Party dogma can't pull their heads out of their own asses for long enough to realize that the vast majority of Americans find their candidates absolutely horrifying.

If I were a Repulican, I would be pining hard for the Chubby Chris Christie right about now. But of course he has no chance with this crowd since he is clearly a Muslim terrorism supporter.

Yeah, he's not doing so well, and people know he's not doing so well. But he's going to have a pretty easy re-election. Like I said, it's too bad the Teabaggers are so intent on putting forward complete loons for candidates - middle America, for the most part, is going to vote against the Republican candidate to a much greater degree than they're going to vote for Obama.

Seriously basso, talk to your other teabagged compatriots. Dredge them up from their Glenn-Beck furnished "survival" shelters and inform them that, in the grand scope of American **** politics, they're the extremists.

    Interesting.

    Special Editorial: Yikes
    William Kristol

THE WEEKLY STANDARD’s official reaction to last night’s Republican presidential debate: Yikes.

Reading the reactions of thoughtful commentators after the stage emptied, talking with conservative policy types and GOP political operatives later last evening and this morning, we know we’re not alone. Most won’t express publicly just how horrified—or at least how demoralized—they are. After all, they still want to beat Obama—as do we. And they want to get along with the possible nominee and the other candidates and their supporters. They don’t want to rock the boat too much. But maybe the GOP presidential boat needs rocking.

The e-mails flooding into our inbox during the evening were less guarded. Early on, we received this missive from a bright young conservative: “I'm watching my first GOP debate...and WE SOUND LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE!!!!” As the evening went on, the craziness receded, and the demoralized comments we received stressed the mediocrity of the field rather than its wackiness. As one more experienced, and therefore more jaded, observer wrote: “I just thought maybe it’s always this bad...they’re only marginally worse than McCain and Bush.”

true, on the whole, i thought the performance was fairly poor. I'm not a huge fan of any of them. however, i will vote for any of the before I vote for the SCOAMFOTUS.

That might be true but if perry, bachmann, cain, or santorum get the nomination they have no chance in hell of winning. These people are crazy and stupid. SS as a ponzi scheme, It might be, but a large chunk of Americans depend on that to survive. bachmann rails against the government, but her family greatly benefits from it.
