I'll say this: Listening to the OU and Mizzou press conferences was night and day. To OU, the deal was done. Mizzou, the school which throughout last summer said it was a "proud member of the Big 12"... said anything but. Not over yet.
You spend more time being a jackass than you do responding to points. My point and the point of others is you are calling the big 12 weak when your team has done really poorly in it. What does that say about A&M? You are excited to go to a conference that is so much better than the big 12 when you can't even win in this one. You are why so many horns don't care about losing the A&M rivalry.
What does that say about A&M? It says they made a terrible hire in Dennis Franchione. A bad hire will kill you in CFB. You are excited to go to a conference that is so much better than the big 12 when you can't even win in this one. I don't understand. What is the metric to say that? They have been in a down period from last years of an over the hill Slocum and then replacing him with an even worse coach but how can you say they cannot win in the Big 12?
K*[rquoter]"We are pleased that the Presidents of the Big 12 institutions have come together this evening to re-commit themselves to our heartland Conference. Our efforts are now focused on working together to make the Big 12, for the long-term, one of the strongest athletic conferences in the nation. "The actions taken this evening, pay tribute to the needs of student-athletes and their families, and preserve the storied historic rivalries so valued by our alumni and the citizens of our states. "We are immensely grateful for the superb work of University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton in skillfully guiding this process. As a result of Chancellor Deaton's outstanding leadership, our member institutions are now focused on a vibrant future for the Big 12 Conference and moving ahead together."[/rquoter] @Jake_Trotter: Anyone realize OU just committed its grant of rights to Big12 for 6 yrs w/o getting a single concession from Texas on LHN? lolololz This says Mizzou rejected SEC to remain in Big 12(?)
This is how their finished based on overall record in the last 10 years: 5th 8th 11th 7th 3rd 9th 5th 10th 9th This is a 10 year summary of the program. Ziggy's assesment is that the big 12 is a bad conference. What does it say then about A&Ms program when they finish this poorly in a "bad" conference. This is not exactly good momentum going to the sec. I wish A&M well. I'm not trying to insult the team. I'm responding an irrational annoying aggie who is trying to sling mud as the school leaves the big 12. You want to be in the SEC. I get that but don't dog a conference's stature when you haven't done **** in it in a decade.
I couldn't agree more. This board isn't quite as bad as Texags or aggieyell, but so many aggies are just talking down on everyone because they're going to the SEC. I don't really see what they're excited about. If UT/OU went to the SEC, that's one thing. They've earned that success. Say all you want, but last year is pretty much the FIRST time they had a good year in about a decade. One year doesn't mean having great amounts of success in the SEC.
not exactly good momentum going to the sec. Since the hire of Sherman, they do have an upswing. If you disagree then I have nothing to say. What is that called if not momentum? Ziggy's assesment is that the big 12 is a bad conference. The Big 9 is certainly behind the PAC-X and the SEC. Probably behind the Big 10. So they are better than the ACC and the Big East? The BE might lose their BCS qualifier soon. I would call that a weak conference. Personally I feel the Big9 is the 4th best conference. That isn't strong so I don't really know why you act like it is a insane travesty to call it weak.
honestly, it's over. they made a 6 year commitment tonight and deaton put it all together. had they fired deaton tonight, that would have been one thing. but this is his baby and mizzou said, along with everyone else, they're committed to it. once they formally sign this, they're locked in pretty good with extensive revenue sharing. i'm most interested now in seeing what terms they give the SEC in return for releases to take A&M.
by the way...i don't have any insider information on this...but when I see BYU all of a sudden not interested...i see that entirely as BYU negotiating. i may be wrong, but i don't think the Big 12 looks LESS stable today than it did right after the SEC invited the Ags and BYU was offered an invite. if there's progress on revenue sharing and Beebe is gone, i'd say that looks a helluva lot more stable than it did then.
Anyone know if the new exit penalties could be imposed on A&M? I'm not saying it should but it's an interesting though.
A&M had the 5th best record in a 12 team conference. They were barely better than half of the teams. It's not like you finished one off the division winner. 5th. The big 12 has 5 appearances in the BCS championship since 2000. Tied with the SEC for most appearances (7 all time; 1 from Nebraska). That's better than most conferences. There are quantified conference rankings and the big 12 is in the top 3,4 most years. 1 or 2 sometimes. My original post was less about how great the big 12. It's good. It was how dumb Ziggy was for talking down the big 12 when his team has been so below average in it.
nope..can't do that. wasn't part of the deal they left. honestly..and no offense to the good ags who post here...i'm ready for them to be gone. they want to be gone. so goodbye. good luck.
Considering ATM has been worse than Tech for almost the entire time they have been in the Big 12, doesn't bode well for your chances in the SEC according to your logic.
No chance unless they sign the new agreement. They negotiated their exit under the old agreement and that is what they will follow.
The big 12 has 5 appearances in the BCS championship since 2000. Currently, and moving forward, they are the 4th best. It was how dumb Ziggy was for talking down the big 12 when his team has been so below average in it. Why is it dumb to talk about conference strength after a team just left? Seems logical to me.
This was his statement that I disagreed with: "If the Big 12 is sooooo good, and TAMU is near the top of it right now, then whyyyy is everyone questioning their ability to compete in the SEC? Because the SEC is weaker huh? C'mon braaaaah, c'mon. Y'all some suckers." They aren't near the top that is where the questions come from about how well they can do in the SEC. The big 12 is up there with the SEC in teams in the top 25. If you judge conference strength on public perception than that is a big vote of confidence. In terms of wins and losses, they have the fewest among all conferences. Sagarin does conference ratings as well: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm As far as the big 12, it's been the 2nd best performing conference in the BCS. Who knows what will happen next year. What I do know is that saying they are now the 4th best on virtually no quantifiable data is not very fair.
The problem is that there is a huge difference between can't and didn't. A&M has sucked for the most part during the Big12's history - that's very different from saying they can't win. Alabama sucked for more than a decade until they hired the right coach a few years ago. Texas and OU both sucked for more than a decade until they hired the right coaches a decade ago. People are way too shortsighted sometimes.
I think we're forgetting that A&M is going to SEC mainly for the money, while also giving Texas the bird on the way out (actually, I don't know which of the 2 is the main reason...). I don't think anybody, including the most demented Aggie fans, believe they'll fare better in the SEC (west) better than the Big12 (south) for the next 5+ years. I know I'll have to question the leadership of Texas if we decided to get friendly with SEC. There's absolutely no reward in booking yourself a tougher schedule than needed to. As for the weak Big 12 comment, we're now (according to ESPN) the best conference in the nation at the moment. Not saying we're better than SEC, but Big 12 is no chopped liver either this year. http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/34022/timing-of-big-12s-likely-demise-is-ironic
