No, it's pretty much that you aren't listening, but neither is the mainstream media. So maybe it's not your fault entirely.

Maybe this will fit. There is way more than this about moderate American Muslim groups speaking out. This is just one small sample.

    Here's more.

    Here's another one also.

I could go on for days finding groups that are Muslim and love America, and against terrorism.

The much-discussed cultural center opened today.

Reading the comments for the article is...well...interesting.

Clearly Islam is not that popular in this country, why would that surprise you?

I did not say it surprised me. And there is an enormous and obvious difference between "not popular" and...

And on and on and on.

Well people are suspect of the religion, on one hand it is touted as a religion of peace, and on the other hand there are several passages in it's holy text that says to kill the non believers.

Is it a relgion, or a political movement?

    or a little of both?

And since 9-11 is still fresh on a lot of people's minds, and it was inspired by this contraditory faith called Islam, can't you see how some people would be a little sore about this?

I can understand how some folks would consider putting that center there as a little bit of "Rubbing someone's nose in it"......

And, I am sure the people behind the community center knew this going in....

Yes they might look at it that way if they are completely ignorant of both Islam, and the Terrorists stance on Islam.

Ignorance should not be rewarded. Instead they should realize that things like the community center are directly opposed to what the terrorists believe, and stand for. It is the exact kind of thing the terrorists say is an abomination and shouldn't exist.

But some people choose to stay ignorant and instead lump any and all Islam together.

Or, the people that are promoting Islam knew that it would cause a stir, and decided to to it anyway, unless they were ignorant of the backlash it would cause.

There is a lot of ignorance going around, from some of the people picking passages from the Koran that incite hatred, to people believing that is all that is in the Koran.

Ironically, the Old Testament has some of these same concepts, but for some reason, people just choose to ignore that.

Meanwhile, Islam is supposed to be taken as written, like it is directly from God - and we are supposed to take one guys word for it, while he rose in political power and changed his message as he went.

Religions seem contradictory - and Islam may be the most contradictory of them all.

I am all for respecting people, and honoring them, but IMO, religion has to go......

I got the impression it was being developed specifically to combat such ignorant perceptions, and then ironically became a focal point for them.

The stuff you're saying about religion is tangential, honestly.

    Yeah, got side tracked, sorry.

Wasn't the original plan to do a mosque? It was at worst poorly thought out...

If it helps bring people together, then great.

We shall see, we shall see.

So the people who were promoting the center should assume enough people will be ignorant of what the terrorists believe, and what the center stands for to not build it?

I don't understand how if the Islamic multi-cultural center promoters were fully aware that ignorant people would object and raise a stink that would change anything. Yet if the people ignorant of the slap in the face this Islamic center would be to those who advocate the terrorists version of Islam were no longer ignorant then the problem is solved.

As a sidenote, I see tons of leftist people protesting against the Pope in Berlin today...yet, these same people seem to have no problem with Islamists around them .

Yea there are parts in the bible that say to kill even your family if they do not accept god. That said, if Islam is supposed to be taken literally, there is other parts, more parts even, and heavier emphasis on loving your enemy, neighbor, considering jews/christians to be people of the book and to consider them your brothers, and that there are many ways to salvation. And that god created different people in different ways and different walks of life and to love all of them. And to go on it talks about killing one innocent soul is the biggest sin, yada yada, the point is the majority and major flow of the book is about living righteously and in peace, even talks about respecting your own country that you are in(so for all the american muslims like myself, it would be America). So what happens when these lines don't go together, then you can look and read deeper and see the context and understand just like the old testament there is a time and context, place, certain wars that are related to some of those more negative passages and they are petty much over written with the above passages which are relayed about peace over and over again.
Yes the terrorist don't listen to them? why? bc they are violent people with an agenda, and if they were christian, they would blike the kkk, claim to be good christians and use their agenda, so on. Some people just use a religious voice to dignify themselves.

The only people who would really relate to these sort of comments people like pamela gellar who are extremely against the mosque, feel the religion is of hate, and we can't co exist with the west are the actual terrorist. They could literally sit down and say you know what, violence is justified, we shouldn't be living together, lets seperate. They suprisingly have similar world views despite not liking eaech other.

This mosque is everything those terrorist didn't want, they didn't want muslims to have a place in American society(this wasn't about takign over, there was no integration plan, this was just to kill and disrupt, and it killed muslims-just as they do by the millions around the world, christians, athiest, jews, it didn't matter, they are merely petty murders). This mosque says those people those terrorist exclusivist view don't stand and that sect and that imam actually has strong ties to the christian church up where i live near the upper west side and even the church talks about how progressive he is. He gave an amazing speech at the daniel pearl memorial as well about the common gorund, yet they painted him to be a terrorist and dragged him out.

the ignorance is truly shameful that they can spin this to be a memorial for those horribel terrorist as it is truly the opposite. Those terrorist are not just my enemies as an American, but especially as a Muslim.

You guys also have to realize that the comments section in Yahoo (and youtube) contains the occasional gem of joke, but is generally littered with the most racist, bigoted, misogynistic, ignorant statements you can think of. I mean, it could be an article about cats and the first reply will state that Obama is a traitor and deserves to die or something like that.

What is scary is on Huffington post which most would say is towards the left, there was a section on helping victims of the pakistan flood that are being ignored and suffering. Most of the comments were like yea we are going to help those guys who try to bomb us, hide osama, take our money aid so on. It is pretty disturbing that people can't seperate governments with people. The people don't even support the government but can't do much about it as obviously they don't have common infrustracture to even work, school, or feed themselves, so the poverty and literacy especially in these rural areas is downright scary. They have literally no connection to the government or even any outside world, yet bc of a corrupt govt actions these people who have no connection or choice in the matter continue to be ignored

People aren't separating people from government because there is no clear line showing a foreign government at fault... only possible "rogue elements", such as in Pakistan. Sure, the govt may be inept or corrupt, but people don't see that in the US as their problem. We've got our own issues with our own govt and Americans generally feel people in places like Pakistan need to get this ***** together and toss out these evil elements in govt and the country. Apparently, we can even elect real leaders here at home.
