Redzone D is all about whether or not you give up a TD. It's not on the defense to prevent a FG inside the 20.
^ What he said, and for us to only give up 2 TDs out of 7 redzone attempts says enough. But for us to only give up 2 FGs out of 5 attempts inside of the redzone is extra icing on the cake
CFL isnt the only football in Canada sir...Since we gettin all technical...Im sure theres some bootleg ones up yonda
i know many people are saying that we need a 2nd WR but i think we should look into the future and look for a 1st WR andre is getting older and i don't think anyone on the texans roster can be a #1
blasphemy! AJ doesn't age. I refuse to believe it. He will be a Texan forever in his prime. lalalalalalalalala
I think we're 6 months ahead of ourselves with this...but I would keep an eye out for a pure vertical speed freak if I were in the Texans front office. This is a passing era, and more and more teams are looking to have an outstanding 1-2 punch at WR in addition to a pass catching TE. Walter is a nice possession receiver, but doesn't win games for you. Jacoby needs to take a BIG jump forward to be a serious #2 guy. Johnson could really use a fly route killer opposite him to pull safeties away.
The regression in the red zone is troubling - but that's easily rectified once Foster's back, I think. But they need to score more TDs, fewer FGs. I think there is some clinching on gary's part in that regard. In terms of the 3Q, let's give the Dolphins some credit - they made obvious adjustments at halftime and did an effective job shutting the Texans down. I would categorize it as different than last year when the offense too often seemed out of sync and on different pages. And let's give some credit back to the offense for making necessary adjustments and, while, yes, the defense played well, putting the dagger in Miami's heart with a big, gamebreaking TD. I thought that was pretty impressive. As was the 5-minute drive to suck the life out of the game. That was an offense imposing its will on the opponent and it was really nice to see.
I think what Walter provides is *vastly* underrated here. He's a vital component of the run game. This oft-repeated idea of having a #2 that burns down the field underscores a lack of understanding of the Texans' ZBS scheme and how important the backside blocking Walter provides is to that effort. In its simpliest form, the ZBS is designed to move a defense one way; the RB is instructed to cut against that movement - but that field isn't open if #2 WR is running down the sideline for a bomb Schaub couldn't deliver anyway. He has to seal backside. Go back and watch highlights of Foster last year and note how often Walter's in the thick of things. I would wager Kubiak views him as nearly indespensible as AJ. This is *precisely* how Denver ran their offense during its SB era. Kubiak is uncannily cloning Terrell Davis, Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Ed McCafferty.
I'm not looking to ditch Walter for a speed guy - I agree with everything you listed. I'd want to sack Jacoby and replace him with a real threat.
Doesn't have to be a #3 - his talent will decide that. It's all about roles. Single back formations are pretty common these days, and Walter pinch hits as a FB anyway.
Love having Kevin Walter, but a few of his strengths are replaceable. I would miss his sure hands and route running, but he only gets maybe 2 targets a game. He's a great blocker, but I don't think that would be hard to find or teach to a younger receiver with speed and size. If he got more passes his way, say taken away from jabroney jones, then I think he'd prove his worth. But if they insist on using him almost entirely in a blocking manner, I'd hope they could find someone young with higher upside. I was really hoping Dickerson would've panned out.
Doesn't it seem like Jacoby is kinda coming around this year? He looks not so bad so far to me. And on defense...if we hadn't had the opportunity to draft JJ Watt...how much worse would this D be? I mean, the guy has been huge...seems like he is a big part of our newfound defensive success.
Watt wont be lighting up the stat sheet, so its a shame that many people outside of Houston wont realize the amount of impact he has on the defensive side of the ball. The guy is a monster...and hopefully a Texan for the next decade.
Watt has been getting plenty of love from analysts on every level. Fans like stats though. He'll be filling up stat sheets soon enough. Hopefully starting this Sunday.
MegaWatt has been getting some love from BSPN recently. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page...phillip-taylor-making-presence-felt-cleveland He was ranked 9th on their Rookie Watch.
If our overall defense can stay in the top 5, he will be getting plenty of attention . An outsider looking at our defense, would see Cushing, Mario and a guy wearing #99. As long as we keep a high ranked D, that will change
