Wellp. Confirmed date of October 4th for the announcing of the iPhone 5 with Tim Cook. http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/21/report-apple-to-hold-media-event-on-october-4th-tim-cook-to-un/
It could be a big one, since it doubles as the annual iPod Line update event. iPhone5 - big jump from 4 - better internals, camera, etc. Unlocked to all carriers? Gateway Drug iPhone4 - $50 8GB model to compete with Android for the non-premium phone consumers. iPod Touch - have heard that it'll be a ultra-minor update.....and have also heard things ranging from a 3G-enabled Touch to a small tablet (5 to 7 inch) version. The larger Touch is probably not happening, since smoking gun leaks of third party cases or component orders would have happened. iPod Nano - haven't heard anything iPod Classic - on Apple's death row. iPod Shuffle - on Apple's death row.
I think you're right about the touch being just a minor upgrade. I highly doubt there will be a large touch/mini iPad because Apple has gone on record (if I'm not mistaken) to say that any screen smaller than 10 inches is awkward for a tablet.
I don't know if anyone here has gotten their hands on iOS5 but during my time with it. It's pretty nice, the notification system is a hell of alot better, My favorite part about it was iMessenger, this is like Google Talk for Androids, but I easily see it becoming as big as BBM. I also liked the ability to receive all the beta updates OTA versus having to plug in the phone to update it's software.
Which is sort of weird...because what's the difference between the Touch and tablets other than size?
Yes, and then no, and then yes again. A lot of people think it will happen, mainly based on new cases being made, but some people think it will be the same size.
Poor choice of words on my part... but usually these things are right when they are able to find out a few weeks before. I'd be solid on that date.
I've been waiting to make 2 3G's go bye-bye, so I hope this is a major iPhone upgrade, and that the screen (please!) is at least a bit bigger (the bigger, the better!). We'll find out soon.
Apple leaks "iPhone 4S" product name in latest iTunes beta With just days to go before the company is expected to detail its latest iPhone offerings, Apple has let slip references to an Phone 4S in its latest iTunes beta. References to the much-used iPhone 4S moniker could be found in the Info.plist file of the MobileDevices bundle that was included with the ninth beta of iTune 10.5 released Friday. However, Apple pulled the software from its developer site shortly after it became aware of the blunder. Specifically, device preferences for Item 7 and Item 8 in the Info.plist file describe a black and white iPhone 4S whose display icons (below) depict models that look identical to the existing black and white CDMA iPhone 4 introduced earlier this year. http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ne_4s_product_name_in_latest_itunes_beta.html
Stunner: Wall Street Journal reporting that iPhone 5 will be a SPRINT EXCLUSIVE, and that the company is basically betting the farm on the deal, signing a long term commitment with Apple that will cost them around $1.5b in operating losses over the next 3 years. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203405504576603053795839250.html
i read on gizmodo they think they'll introduce a "assistant" feature, which is basically voice activation/search type feature. but said it might only work with a more powerful processor chip in the new iphone, whether that be iphone 5 or iphone 4s or whatever. that would be ridiculous wouldnt it? you're going to tout a big feature like that for the new iOS and not have it work for anyone who doesnt buy the new iphone with the processor that allows it to work, huh? guess we'll find out tomorrow, though it sounds like theres not going to be an iphone 5, more of a iphone 4s EDIT: just saw the post above mine, maybe iphone 5 does surface
Stunner? Sprint was expected to get the iPhone 5. Nothing new. The only one left is T-Mobile which I assume will eventually get it if the Merger officially dies. Also... there will be both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4s -- as the rumors earlier in the year were that Apple was making two phones, one low-end and one high-end. http://www.slashgear.com/iphone-5-specs-leaked-by-cincinnati-bell-01184707/
Maybe the article has been updated, but the current one doesn't seem to suggest any exclusivity. And really, it doesn't make a lot of sense - no way Apple will risk pissing off all of it's AT&T and Verizon customers at this point; and no way Apple risks making an enemy of those two carriers. Everything I've seen suggests a powerful new Iphone 5 and a lower-end 4S to move into the lower-tier smartphone market.
Yeah I would agree. Rumors about LTE with iPhone 5 have been surfacing also... which kinda make sense now that AT&T has officially launched their LTE network.
Sorry -- the exclusivity thing came from BGR. They're reporting Sprint made the deal to get the exclusive, which would actually make more sense -- why bet the whole company if you're still going to be in competition with the guys who have been taking your lunch money for years? And I think you underestimate how powerful Apple is here. They absolutely hold the upper hand when it comes to carrier deals. What is AT&T going to do, refuse the iPhone when it becomes available to them? http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/03/sprin...rom-apple-launching-the-iphone-5-exclusively/
Oh I have no doubt Apple *could* do it. But their entire brand is built on the love their customers have for them. Telling all current iPhone users they are out of luck with their current plans is not at all in keeping with Apple philosophies - they'd provoke a revolt within their fanbase, especially given that Sprint's quality and availability is considered to be weaker than either AT&T or Verizon.
