Obviously freedom of choice is out the window. We can't wear fur, eat transfats, smoke a cigarette in public in some cities or have an alcoholic beverage out after 2 am in most cities.

    Where is the freedom going?

If I was cool enough. :(

I can tell you those things are all usually happening at once every night in New Orleans

Freedom of choice does not give you the freedom to encroach on other peoples freedoms.

Many 'freedoms' are taken away when people can't restrain themselves. But yes, we have plenty of politicians and groups with a self righteous attitude who feel the need to press their beliefs on others.

Functionally why are fur coats necessary anymore?

They're not. I have no problem with the ban.

Ok this is stupid, just as bad as Texas Christians that ban gambling while the State budget is drying up thanks to Rick Perry.

I assume you don't use leather products either? Or you do, and you're just ok with this because it doesn't affect you personally?

I usually think environmentalists are extremists idiots whose thoughts and policies deserve no consideration... but fur coats are just stupid.
    Leather is a different story...

It is almost 2 am and 79 degrees here. Anyone from LA wanting to buy a fur needs to get pimp-slapped by a pimp wearing a fur coat.

Yes and we cannot even kill people, steal, discriminate drinking alcohol when under 21 (in the USA) and doing drugs. It really is sad that we do not have freedom of choice.

There are far more "real" restrictions on one's freedom courtesy of our newfound love affair with "security".

While I think the ban is unnecessary, it's a stupid thing to get worked up over, relatively speaking.

The headline is incorrect, both on the article and the thread. Los Angeles didn't ban selling fur. West Hollywood banned selling fur. That's a pretty big difference. While it's certainly an infringement on freedom, it's more like the dry areas in the Heights than Houston reinstating Prohibition.
