They are looking for water. My neighborhood has a massive rat infestation because we live next to a green belt, and the rats are coming to houses with pools for water.

I once had an ant problem in my bedroom. I keep it clean and don't let people eat in my room so I was very surprised by the appearance of ants. So one day I found a line of them against a wall and I followed it to their food source. It was the glue holding a small box together. Naturally I terminated them with extreme annoyance. Moral of the story - Look out for glue?
i had a running battle for a month this summer with fire ants. i was unable to locate the mound, during drought conditions they go deeper and are not visible from the surface. and yes, they are looking for water. i used a mixture of boric acid & peanut butter. 1 teaspoon to 16 ounces of peanut butter. the acid kills slowly so it allows enough time for the little !#$%@^ to carry it back to the mound eventually killing queen and all. its important to keep the amount of acid small enough to not be immediately fatal or rejected by the invading &^%$#%$@! i found this article very helpful. (boric acid section almost at the end) good luck!
