John Lucas Bringing Exhibition Basketball to Town

The NBA lockout might not be able to keep basketball out of Houston this fall after all.

Former Rockets guard and longtime NBA coach John Lucas III is organizing a series of games in October and November featuring NBA stars in conjunction with his John Lucas Basketball Resources training camps should the NBA work stoppage continue into the scheduled start of the season.

Though many arrangements have not been finalized, Lucas said he has already received commitments for some games from NBA players including stars Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin.

Rockets players Terrence Williams and Jonny Flynn and Houston-based players DeAndre Jordan, John Lucas II, T.J. Ford and Damon Jones have also committed to the participate along with Baron Davis, Thaddeus Young, Derrick Williams, Tristan Thompson and Corey Joseph.

Games will be held on eight-consecutive Sundays at Delmar Fieldhouse. Lucas estimates that tickets will cost an average of roughly $20 with proceeds to benefit HISD programs, local basketball charities and the John Lucas Foundation aftercare program.

With indications that the lockout could continue well into fall, Lucas said he hopes to have players participate in his training camp in the week leading up to each game.

"Basketball is my family business," Lucas said. "It's a way to keep playing. We have a new breed of player. Players just want to play. We're not honing our skills. The theme of this is to come work out for a week and then cap it off with a game on the weekend.

"It's going very well. The tickets will be affordable for people who usually cannot get a chance to see these guys. It's a nice chance for the players to give back and I would hope a lot of players will come in a week before and doing training and conditioning and see what we have to offer in the city."
