Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest Sun Ra - Sun Ra Visits Planet Earth Lee "Scratch" Perry - Time Boom X De Devil Dead
I saw the rumor that is Gary Clark Jr, in Discovery park last night. Everybody is writing that he is the next big thing out of Austin but so far all he has out is a little 4 song EP, Bright Lights. Dude can shred, and he plays every style from Hendrix deep cuts to Marvin Gay. A lot of it is a dead ringer for Dan Auerbach (Black Keys). Probably not enough stage presence to be a star but a must see bar band. Great little venue down there too. You can bring your own plastic bottles, your dog, your chairs. You park right under the stage for $10. St Arnold's sold all kinds of adult beverages and they plan to have all kinds of music this Fall, for free.
Caught Radiohead's live performance of TKOL on Paladia a couple nights ago and it sounded so incredible. The album as an entirety didn't blow me away, but every time I hear "Codex" still to this day it freezes me right in my tracks and I can't help but be completely silent until the last note. The first time I heard it, my girlfriend and I were laying on the floor stoned off our asses, just listening to the album... when that song came on it provoked strong reactions from both of us. She said she couldn't even breathe the whole time it was playing, and in the middle of it I was so overcome by emotion that I started laughing and crying at the same time. We are both huge Radiohead fans, but we agreed after hearing Codex that it was the most beautiful song we had ever heard.
Codex is my favorite off that album and in my top 5 Radiohead songs of all-time but I still have to go with "How to Disappear Completely" off Kid A as my #1 favorite song by them. But I know what you mean by being haunted by a song - that is currently how I feel about "Foreground" by Grizzly Bear. God...I love that song!
I listened to Kid A exclusively around this time last year for a period of about 6 weeks. I must have had that song ringing through my headphones on repeat for hours as I walked around the UH campus lost and undefined. That was definitely one song that was speaking right down into the gray area of my mind. In all the music I listen to and enjoy there is nothing quite like Radiohead to me. Their music has the ability reach me and speak right into my subconscious. I believe it to be one of the few pure forms of transcendental music around today. Kid A is to music what Van Gogh and Monet were to art. It took the classical perceptions and turned them on their heads, showing that beauty exists in all forms of the canvas, not just in the chorus, or the stars shining brightly in the corn field. It is as much about the dull yellow grain on the ground as it is the heavenly body in the sky. I think Kid A is probably one of the most important albums in music history, and will hold up for centuries as a masterpiece.
Actually I'm more methed out right now because I've been popping Advil Cold and Sinus for the past month. But the concept remains the same.
