A skin? Wow.. You know nothing about Windows phone then. You ignorance shows. Send a facebook chat on the iPhone, you have to launch the facebook app. How about updating/syncing your contacts with facebook? You have to use an app for that. How about conversation view between emails, texts, facebook chats and phone calls? Doesn't exist on the iPhone. It's more than a skin, and it shows you haven't even touched a phone yet. You have the arrogance to say its nothing special when you obviously know nothing about the phone. I've owned every iPhone. Jailbroken it, taken it apart, modded it almost every way possible, and between the two, the iPhone isn't even close. Believe me, if it were, I would go out and get it today. I'm all about buying what's best, and if you think the iPhone is best you've been conned.

Windows tablets are more a threat to Android than they are iOS.

Also, I love how Metro looks in tablet form, but to be honest I'm not digging the 'split OS' idea. If anything, I think they run the risk of undercutting their own OS.

Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said that I think iPhone is better than Windows Phone 7. If you think Windows Phone 7 wasn't hugely influenced by the iPhone then you are just blind.

Without the success of the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 wouldnt' even exist and if it did, it would be as bad as Windows Mobile was.

Windows 8 looks EXACTLY like WebOS, actually. As an OS, WebOS is more robust that iOS and Android. I'd call iOS and Android skins at their heart but really great app base. WebOS, at it's core, is an internet connected device that integrates all sorts of things, NATIVELY, to the cloud. You don't need an "app" to talk to the cloud with WebOS.

Based on that video, Win8 looks A LOT like WebOS in that it talks to cloud based apps natively from the OS. The ability to save files right to the cloud (say, Box.net) without requiring an app is cool stuff or saving your contacts to GMail without synchronizing is cool stuff. Win8 even stole the card view from WebOS where you multitask by throwing cards from left to right.

I agree with an earlier post. Win8 is gonna put a series dent in iPad. First, Win8 will be the defacto PC standard in 2-3 years. As such, they've got a built-in "eco-system" where your tablets can run all the same apps as your PC and share files natively.

Win8 will be the first legit challenger to iPad.

Not really a bit fan of it yet. A bit annoying or getting use to for Desktop users but I can see this is a winner for laptops and tablets. I am able to play 1080p video without hiccups on my lowly machine with this built that I couldn't even play on Windows 7 or XP or Ubuntu. I am very please!

You'd think people putting together a tech video would be able to figure out how to get stereo sound.

I don't see what is wrong with a company that has entered the market late, but as long as it can improve on the current products, then it doesn't have to 'fall behind and fail'. I've got an old iPad (v. 1, as basic as possible) and it still pisses me off sometimes, because I simply can't drag files in and out as easily as I would like, and it forgets websites if you leave them too long, and you can't multitask. Quite frankly, if Windows can come up with something that has all of these capabilities and can even integrate it with the normal PC system I'm now typing on, I'd probably switch over to it.

Although Apple App Store does kick everybody's ass on games.

Bill Gates was harping about the tablet forever, but they just didn't capture the market. I bet if they really wanted to they could sue the pants of both apple and google. They spend a large chunk on microsoft research a greater amount than both google and apple combined over the years.

This is the reason why Windows can win it all. They still own the desktop and most of the enterprise. They just need to make it more user friendly and have the right form factor. With quad core arm processors and cheap touch screens, it could be a perfect storm for Windows to dominate the mobile space.

I haven't been keeping up too much with Windows 8 but with the new slates coming out I imagine my use for it would be something along the lines of a tablet that I can dock and hook up to my peripherals at home or at work.

Similar to what the Atrix 4G was TRYING to be but didn't pull off too well. Windows 8 on a tablet will be fully functional unlike a mobile phone and I'll be able to use my work applications on the same device as I would my gaming software. Obviously these tablets won't be running any hardcore videogames like BF3 or anything but I would love to have a seamless experience moving from my mobile device to my personal PC system and work.

I currently have an android phone and tablet and have basically ditched my laptop but I'll be keeping an eye on Windows 8 and it's new products coming out. Pretty exciting stuff

I see it differently, I think Windows 8 is worthless for desktop/enterprise use. All of the ui inprovements are aimed at tablets/casual users.

Dont see corporations splurging on a windows 8 upgrade any time soon.

I actually see the opposite. Since so many companies have skipped Windows Vista and are now going through the brutal migration process, I think they are going to see the benefit of staying current due to the fact it is easier to stay up to date than it is to do a gigantor migration. Most companies that I am dealing with are seeing Windows 7 as a vehicle to update everything from AD, hardware and software asset management, delivery systems, processes, change management, etc.

Of course, these reasons are not because it has a snazzy new UI but because support will be easier and more cost effective. Another point is that an upgrade will not happen anytime soon as Windows 8 has a long time before it will be RTM'd. M$ has started having a very good beta / RC / etc programs that are long and extensive. If I had to guess, I do not think we will see Win8 until 2013 at the earliest and most likely 2014.

So has anyone here actually tried it out yet?

I downloaded the 64bit version and got it to work almost perfectly using VirtualBox.

Be sure to select Windows 7 when creating your virtual OS. Enable 2d and 3d acceleration

I absolutely hate how the Start menu is pretty much the tile screen.
The recycle bin has a "microsoft office" type of feel to it, it's weird lol. Task manager is different too (slightly)

IE10 is really smooth too, surprisingly.

not my picture, but this is what the BSOD looks like.

I dislike how it doesn't display as much information with regards to stop codes but I think in the tiny text it might help you decipher what is going on. Event Viewer always helps too (Sometimes)

Loving it so far. The swipe to the next screen is making thing so much easier and cool at the same time. It's clean, less clutter and looks gorgeous. The snapping is a bit disappointing because you can't control the size. Hopefully by the final build with people's inputs it should be great. I'm curious to see what some of the hacking community will improve on the Metro UI.

Well they are copying Apple in that regard. People say that their Mac's don't crash because their crash screen doesn't have any info on it.
