Just picked this one up Tuesday. Work has only allowed me to play a few hours, but its pretty good so far. The second one made me lose some interest, but this one definitely brought me back. The weapons bring a much different dynamic to the game and add immensely to the enjoyability of it all. Anyone else picked this one up?
I think this is going to be the first Insomniac game I pass on. I don't have as much time for gaming, and I've kind of designated Uncharted 3, Arkham City, and Dark Souls (if I have time) as my games for the fall. I've heard meh things about the game, particularly the story and the last third of the game. I like that they brought back the weapon wheel instead of limiting you to two weapons like in Resistance 2. But a big time BOO for eliminating the 8 player co-op mode from Resistance 2, which was the best part of the game. Limiting the number of players to 16 for multi-player seems a mixed blessing. The scale will be smaller without some of the epic battles in R2, but it'll probably be a tighter experience.
Part 1: I beat part 1 but never got a chance to play part 2. I remember part 1 being very repetitive, same enemies over and over again. Maybe my taste has changed over time, but the 'zap' sound of a space gun just isn't as satisfying as the sound and rumble of a round of bullet popping in a modern military game. Part 3: The reviews of part 3 have been very good so far. It looks like it really mixes things up and the enemies are much more developed. Even the protagonist is a lot more interesting. They ditched Nathon from part 1, he was bald, with really no backstory. Part 3's character is fighting for his family, and a little more interesting. Here is the video review. Was going to skip it (loved R1, didn't care for R2, was mixed about R3 from previews). But impressions sound really positive. Definitely seems better than R2, and possibly the best of the series. That gets me interested, especially since Resistance fans are a bit hard to please I think. I think I'll still wait for a good deal though (so much other stuff to play). Maybe see if someplace sells it for a decent discount during the holidays.
Its amazing how little attention gets paid to this series. If you're on the fence at all, I recommend it highly. I haven't been able to put it down and it really got me invested in the characters. So much so that there's a great sense of payoff about midway through the game that I won't spoil. I can't really think of any major complaints. RC, if you end up picking it up let me know what you think.
You're making me reconsider not picking this game up. I bought every Insomniac game since the first Spyro on release day except the first Resistance because I hadn't yet bought a PS3. The reviews do seem to be pretty good, and it looks like Insomniac is bring their A Game as far weapon design goes. They really have underwhelmed a bit with the weaponry in the series so far after being pretty damn innovative with the Ratchet and Clank series.
They've taken the weapon system more from R&C this time. For instance, the more you use a weapon, the more it levels up. The Auger is still awesome. One of the best things was bringing back the wheel and not limiting to two weapons. I've used almost every weapon fairly extensively. The magnum with exploding rounds is pretty sweet.
Limiting the player to 2 weapons in R2 (or any Insomniac game) is probably one of the dumbest things you could do. Little things like that is what almost killed my interest in the series. Glad to see R3 brought it back. I still was hoping for the R1 health system (it was close to perfect IMO), but no health regeneration is still a plus. Weapon design probably was a bit behind R&C, but it was still refreshing to play a Resistance game and know how much different a fight can go depending on what weapon(s) you used (and thus, how much more strategy is involved). The series does seem very underrated (although this is assuming R3 is awesome). I never understood most of the complaints about R1 (outside of general complaints for a launch title). I think the series was getting some attention when R2 came around, but unfortunately, R2 itself did the series no favors. Some of the previews for R3 didn't seem as impressive as they probably should have been as well. I am happy to see that apparently the game itself seems to be very good (unlike what I was expecting). If/when I play R3, I'll make sure to post my impressions.
It is awesome. At first, I wasn't big on the lack of health regen. I guess more so, I didn't expect it that way. I'm playing on the toughest difficulty and I've been able to make steady progress though a couple of parts have kicked my butt. It seems there's just the right amount of health pickups.
