Cause they were lousy inside and were considered unprestigious back-office space even then, which is why the PA-NYNJ had to use most of the space it couldn't rent out. Now? They can't even attract tenants to a much nicer, very modern building at subsidized rents. Rebuildig the old granite ghosts would have made it even worse.
Freedom Tower is applying all the lessons learned from the previous attack. Supposedly, it will not be able to be brought down by an airliner. Some of the new safety features are noted at the link below: http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_5320000/newsid_5323700/5323700.stm That said....I wouldn't want to be a guinnea pig in that experiment, i.e. you won't catch me working there.
The World Trade Center is many buildings. many were destroyed on 9/11. many will be rebuilt in its place. The formerly named Freedom Tower, 1WTC, will be the premier building within the complex...
because they were ugly buildings? The original towers actually had a bit of controvery. Residents at the time it was built hated the architecture and thought it ruined the NY skyline. I actually think its a good move that they made the original foot prints into the memorial.
Wow. ToyCen (or whatever his name is) suddenly shows up to threads disguised as other peeps. I was there this past summer and went to the memorial museum. It was a very somber feeling. I'll post some photos.
It's a lot more than 4 buildings but only the main tower is being built now from the picture. There is going to be a total of 6 buildings. 1WTC, 2WTC,3WTC,4WTC,5WTC, 7WTC (dont know what happened to six) The other 3 buildings you see in the pictures are on hold till economic conditions turn around. I actually agree with samfish. There is already a high vacancy rate for office space. Don't think its the best use of public funds to be building even more buildings. Still glad to see they have the memorial about complete and at least the main building (Tower 1) under construction though. read about the 6 buildings being planned (7 WTC has already been built in 2006 and is only 2/3rds occupied so i dont understand how building even more office spaces is going to help) http://www.wtc.com/about/office-towers http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/index.html
I actually liked the simplicity of the WTC. It represented a no BS approach. It was about getting sh** done with no fluff. Plus, the twin towers became an icon by itself.
Except it apparently didn't get **** done. You construct office buildings to rent out office spaces at a profitable rate. As Sam noted, the "renting out office spaces" part wasn't going very well.
the original buildings weren't all that special against the skyline, but up close it was an awesome site
Pardon my uncouth Clutchfans colleague. He is not as well versed in the language of love as one should be when it comes to wooing a beautiful damsel such as yourself. I on the other hand.... (yo man don't be lurking on CF right? I ain't scurred, just aksing.)
