NO! Some people have short memories, or no memory at all.

Sometimes, however they get the skills w/o the ethics.

I won't look for it now, but I saw a documentary (either ID, NatGeo, or History) about gang members in the military and using the combat and recruitment skills for their gangs.

    No.

Instead, children of politicians (Congress, President etc.) should be required to be in military while they are serving their terms.

I could support everyone going to boot camp between high school and college (or the summer after high school).

This way, everyone gets in shape as we know we are a fat freaking country, and everyone has to at least work hard for 6 weeks.

But conscription is anti-thesis to the idea of this country to a large degree. We have a volunteer army for a reason. 2 years is a very long time, and frankly, the cost would be immense.

We are all on board with requiring our youth to be of service to the country but half of us are against the wealthy being of service to the country.

If we are talking about pure military service, then absolutely not. I've worked in 5 Veteran Affairs hospitals and seen veterans from WWII to the War on Terror, and honestly a lot of these people have been chewed up and spit out. While I'm well aware that this group represents only a subset of the population, I would not wish what many of these men and women have seen on anyone much less force young people to have to do so.

Now if by service we are essentially saying they have to have a job that fits in with: Coast Guard, Peace Corps, Embassy, Army Corp Engineers, Dept. of whomever, NASA, Postal Service, School System, DMV, etc. As in they have to have a federal/state/local governmental position/job for 2 years in some capacity, then that may not be a bad idea. Just as long as it is not required a pension or something as part of it, because that would likely bankrupt the country.

how generous of y'all to allow others to make such a sacrifice. one for which you are - regrettably, i'm sure - not eligible.

should i assume everyone supporting this idea has served, and been bettered by, their 2 years in the military already? or at the very least, would support that any such law would require everyone currently older than 18 to still put in their 2 years. staggered of course, as we can't have the whole population simultaneously join the military. we wouldn't want this to be crazy, just mandatory.

I've made my feelings clear here before about the draft.
