So I'm thinking about going to vegas at the end of October, looking for a cheap rental car. Staying 20-25, cheapest I can find so far is $180, wondering if the good people at clutchfans are aware of something cheaper.

Regardless of what you decide on, continue to check the price especially as it gets close to the time you will be there. Prices tend to drop if they have cars available.

I rented a car in Hawaii and when I first rented it was about $320 for the week. A few days before we arrived, I got the same car for about $150 for the week.

Had always just rented when I'd book the hotel, good thinking, will definitely do that.

I do a lot of renting and I tend to rent well in advance of my trip. I probably end up canceling and re-renting 2-3 times most of the time because the price goes down if they still have cars available as the trip gets closer.

If you are worried about spending too much on a car rental to Vegas maybe you should plan a trip elsewhere.

Nothing wrong with looking for bargains wherever you decide to go on a trip.

Do you rent directly from the rental car website (if so which one) or do you use websites like priceline/hotwire?

Try Priceline, when I go out of town I always use their service for hotels and car rentals, get really good deals.

Why do you need a car in Vegas?

Kind of what I was wondering as well, it just seems like more a hassle. You can pretty much walk anywhere on the strip, taxi or bus too.

To drive to places around Las Vegas? Hoover Dam, Area 51, etc. Also, at times the line to wait for a cab at the airport is ridiculous.

I've been 4 times, if I want to go from MGM to Wynn, that's well over a mile, if you're not driving between 4 and 7, traffic is hardly anything to deal with. I'd also like to go downtown a time or two, and you can't walk that (safely)

If I'm already spending $850 pp for flight and hotel plus the $2,500+ on gaming and food/attractions, saving a hundred or so on a car by asking around doesn't sound out of the question.

I'm thinking maybe some people don't realize you can't walk all of Vegas, no matter the weather.

Things appear closer than they are. :) Cab fares tend to add up and you are at the mercy of long waits at times.

Personally, everywhere I have been in the U.S. with the exception of downtown New York, I have preferred a car.

Have you been to the Fremont Street experience? That was a good time. Bands playing, places to eat and drink, street magicians/performers, laser show on the covered walk area.

Just this last year when I made my yearly trip, it was amazing, one of the better nights of the entire trip. First two years I made the mistake thinking I didn't want or need the car, but I racked up $40-50 in cab fares a day, plus the $35 to and from the airport.

We're heading back in the next 3-6 months. This calendar year it's our fall back trip in case I need the Delta miles. I am currently at Platinum and if a couple of work trips come into play, I'll be about 2500 short of Diamond status, so we'll head there before the end of the year.

We didn't spend a lot of time at Fremont Street the last time we went, but we'll head over there for a longer time this next trip.

After Freemont, stopped and played roulette at the Golden Nugget, pretty nice old school Vegas feel to it. After going summer first 3 years, trip got delayed until November last year, weather was so much better, at one point actually had to put a jacket on outside. But definitely any time over the next 3-6 months would be perfect to make the trip.

If you want to save money and time, use cabs. Not only are you paying for the car but you have to pay for parking which is also expensive. When we went to Hoover Dam, we rented a car for the day. $180 will buy you a lot of cab rides.
