A few sites have confirmed that he has taken the gig, but this is the most credible source I could find to relay the story.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/awards/2011/09/poll-should-eddie-murphy-host-the-oscars.html

t's obvious why Oscarcast producer Brett Ratner would want Eddie Murphy to host the next Academy Awards ceremony: to hype their upcoming flick "Tower Heist," which doesn't exactly look like a major kudos contender. And it's clear why Murphy may want to take the gig, even in the aftermath of last year's wipeout by James Franco and Anne Hathaway: His career badly needs a kick-start. But is Murphy right for the job?

He has two strong pluses. A good Oscar host should be 1) a notable Hollywood veteran (like Bob Hope, Steve Martin) with 2) expert comedy chops. Also, let's be honest: It'd be great to see the Oscars put a minority in the spotlight again.

But Murphy can be smug (he reportedly stormed out of the Kodak Theatre when he didn't win the Oscar for "Dreamgirls") and not exactly a team player. Let's not forget how he interrupted the presentation of the best picture Oscar in 1988 to fume at Hollywood over its lack of recognition for black films...

Why? Is that not a good thing or should it not be a factor in the selection process?

I think the selection process should focus solely on merit and not on skin color. That being said, Eddie Murphy could be an awesome choice.

I wonder why they can't find a mainstay? They've made some bad choices - Hugh Jackman? Franco and Hathaway? Alec Baldwin? But there's got to be something more. With Ellen's popularity and all around happy go lucky humor, bland as it can be, one would have thought she could have had some staying power.

Eddie clearly could be hilarious... but I foresee watered down jokes and awkwardness.

One would have thought Will Ferrell would have hosted by now, but it's probably past his time.

I know the Jon Stewart experiment wasn't an overwhelming success, but one could foresee Steven Colbert being hilarious.

Chris Rock came across as extremely watered-down, nervous. When he DID get "controversial", Sean Penn got all self-righteous on him.

It's a shame, becuz Rock is hilarious. When in the right setting.

Eddie Murphy'd be a good choice.

Can't be worse than Franco and Hathaway.

Why is a minority always black? Last I checked, Hispanics, Asians, Indian and a host of others never get the opportunity.

Why not have Edward James Olmos, or Paul Rodriguez, or Ken Leung or Mindy Kaling.

Admittedly, Olmos or George Lopez might be the "oscar"-type, but freaking give me a break, there are other minorities that than just black.

Why not just have Danny Trejo then? Would probably be a ratings bonanza...I would watch, and I really don't care too much about the AW.

Also, I don't think any acceptance speeches would go over their limit with Machete standing behind them.

Should have Will Smith and Tommie Lee Jones take a swing at it...
