He's more likely to get killed by coming to the Third Ward this Saturday, so, I say awesome.

He has no idea what they're fighting for and no inkling as to why he should care or be there other than "I thought it would be cool".

    Therefore, big ****ing dumbass.

    He's stupid, but I think he's cool.

I guess I'm a sucker for risk takers.

It might have been useful for a college entrance essay, but dangerous in a job interview. As an employer, I'd assume I couldn't count on him to come to work everyday, or that he might go do something colassally stupid as a representative of my company.

I'm sure if nothing bad happens to him, it'll be a good life experience. But, it seems pretty selfish of him to go. He takes hospitality that could be spent on Libyans, he could endanger real fighters who need to save his butt, he could put the US in a bad spot if he's captured by loyalist forces and held as a hostage (or executed on TV), he could be used as a propaganda tool by loyalists who want to say that the revolution was fueled by foreign agitators. That's all to say nothing of the personal risk of being killed, maimed, imprisoned, tortured, or implicated in atrocities. He might even be late getting back for the fall term at UCLA.

So, on balance, he's a bonehead.

Why are you dissing my neighborhood?

    what an idiot..
the rebels just think its kind of funny and entertaining having an American college student which is why they are all laughing. War is serious and people die in gruesome ways. This kid just thinks its all fun and games, having a good time and having people give him attention. I'd like to see his face if he was actaully caught in the middle of a fire fight and pee himself. Now if he had ties to Libya or the actual rebels and their cause that would be a different story. I'd say good for him if he was really fighting for something he believed in but nope he's just in it for the fun and games and suppose coolness of it. WHAT AN IDIOT.

What if he gets kidnapped and/or imprisoned? Is our government gonna have to bail him out?

Are any of y'all in college now or in your late teens or early 20's? If so would any of you consider doing something like this?

Also anybody remember near the beginning of the invasion of Iraq a high school kid from New York ended up in Basra to right a paper for his journalism class?

American's 'sick' vacation in Libyan revolution may be over
'Rebels fed up with Chris Jeon, US kid who tried to join, told him 2 go,' tweet says

An American college student's "sick" vacation with Libyan rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi may be over: The 21-year-old man was sent packing from the revolution, according to tweet from Al Jazeera on Friday.

"Our team in east Libya said rebels fed up with Chris Jeon, US kid who tried to join, told him 2 go, last seen on pick-up going 2 Benghazi," Al Jazeera producer Evan Hill tweeted.

Jeon, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, joined rebel forces near the front lines of the conflict after buying a one-way ticket to Cairo two weeks ago, The Christian Science Monitor reported Thursday.

“This is one of the few real revolutions,” he told the Monitor. “I just thought I’d come check it out.”

He purchased a one-way ticket from Los Angeles to Cairo, then traveled by land across the border into Libya, according to the Monitor.

A friend of Jeon's described him as “thrill seeker” who refused to listen when friends tried to stop him from embarking on the trip. His parents didn't know where he was, either, according to reports.

"He's becoming a thrill seeker. I love him to death, but he does plenty of stupid s---. ... I'm very glad that he's still alive," Peter Duan told LA Weekly.

Duan also told the Weekly: "He told me, 'If a rebel's running at me with a gun, I won't hesitate to shoot his head off.'"

Jeon was photographed at a rebel outpost in the middle of the desert near the front lines of the fight with Gadhafi’s loyalists. He made fast friends with a gaggle of rebel fighters.

“At spring break I told my friends a 'sick' vacation would be to come here and fight with the rebels,” he told the Monitor.

He was among the first rebel fighters who drove into Nawlifyia to take it from Gadhafi troops, he told the Monitor.

But it seems his time in the Libyan sun may be over.
