I can understand why it would be illegal without permission, but when we walk into a retail store, from my understanding, there has to be a VISIBLE sign stating you're being recorded. Thing is, what if someone was video taping cops, and the cops' video camera/audio couldn't see/hear what was really happening, and a cop gets hurt seriously or killed, and the person "Eavesdropping" catches it on video Would the state accept this video and not charge the eavesdropper because its convenient for them?
There is no way this should be a crime. It should be covered under the bill of rights (I would think it's a form of freedom of speech)... I think outlawing videotaping cops is a way for states to protect themselves. There shouldn't be anything to hide. Like ToyCen said, it could aide in investigations...
I can't imagine ANYONE, other than a cop who was just videotaped committing a crime, agreeing with this.
My understanding is that this centers on *audio*, not *video*. Still an insane ruling, obviously, just a tidbit to note.

The moment you step out your door you are basically consenting to being video taped and recorded. You can't have privacy in a public place. This is ridiculous.

It is crap. When you push something completely undesireable to you onto someone else because "it's your right", well that IS crap.
Note the irony of the government claiming immunity for itself and the telecommunications companies that did the same thing 1000s of times courtesy of the patriot act. Like I said before: Break the law a few times, criminal. Break it a lot, mafia. Break it rampantly and without consequence, government entity.
