so, i haven't done a sync in a while or upgraded my iphone. didn't think much of it at the time. didn't know it would actually break my iphone. have videos and pics of my now dead dogs on the phone. i turn the phone off for jury duty today in court. when i try to turn it back on, it won't start up and is in recovery mode.

now, it wants to restore and i'm pretty sure it's going to wipe all my data since my last sync...which was a while ago...meaning so long dog videos and dog pictures.

it's just unbelievable that you cannot turn the phone back on after turning it off. i had no idea this would happen.

FU, APPLE. I'm so pissed off right now.

all these bs tricks to get out of recovery mode aren't working...such as holding down home button and sleep button for ten seconds or whatever.

i guess i get to lose all those memories because of whatever this collosal failure of a phone did by not turning back on. any ideas? anyone?

i just can't believe that's how this phone works. turn me off and i won't turn back on. it's like a big slap in the face. why don't i bend over so you can...? piece of ****.

That's not how it normally works.

It sounds like you had a tethered jailbreak. You should be able to reboot into it using software, but I can't recall the name of it.

That's what you get for going to jury duty.

I've never heard of any normal iPhone doing this. Best bet is to contact the Apple store before you restore.

i would have used silent mode if i knew this would happen.

some idiot never even turned it off and his ringtone or new text message tone went off loudly like five times before he could even deal with it. idiot apologizes...only to have his phone go off like that two more times. he didn't even turn it on silent mode or off after the first time. the judge and the attorneys didn't even say anything...even though it was clearly annoying as hell as they were questioning jurors. 40-something other jurors are rolling their eyes at this idiot.

    i would call Apple...except I don't have a phone now.

It's not anyone's fault but your own that you didn't back up on a regular basis. I realize that there is emotion involved, and I'm sorry for the potential loss of pics. I've seen it a hundred times and for some reason it takes something like this to get people to back up.

All of that said, I wouldn't give up on getting the pics/vids back yet. Lots and lots of info out there for restoration.

well, i've never seen it among people i know. i'm just turning a phone off and on again. if it was stable turned on, then why wouldn't it turn back on when it's turned off? that does not make sense to me. i'm sure there is some fancy technical reason for why it happened. i'll keep looking and i'll call apple tomorrow from work.

question for you...how can i figure out what photos and videos i may have got in my last sync. itunes expects the phone to be connected to show me all those tabs to access that stuff. is there no way for me to see what photos and videos i may have sync-ed previously unless i have a working iphone connected?

I would just go to the folder they live in, sort by detail and look at the dates.

are you not able to sync it now?

my phone wouldnt sync for the longest time.

what i did was plug my phone into to the computer, and had itunes check for updates, and then it finally decided it wanted to sync.

i kinda hate the iphone now.

I'm really paranoid about this type of stuff. Don't have an Iphone so I don't know if you need to upgrade to get the most out of the device. I do have an old Ipod video that I have updated maybe twice since I got it because I'm afraid Apple intentionally issues these updates to brick devices so we have to go out and buy new ones. Planned obsolescence.

Happened to me. On a 3gs iphone. Happily checking twitter on the bus, I power it to sleep and put it in my pocket. I take it out of my pocket 30seconds later to text my wife and it's a brick.

Nothing could be done with it. Dead.

I had not synced in a while and got burned. Sync your phone. Often.

i have no solution at this time. i'm about resigned to the fact that my data is going to be lost no matter what I do. I spent hours last night trying to find solutions but haven't found anything that actually works. I do have an Apple store in town so I will call them this morning. I'm not too keen about calling Apple phone support as they want to charge me $29 for a single phone support incident and my bet is they don't solve the problem plus I'm out $29. They probably have a bunch of canned responses that won't do anything.

I guess there is some valid software reason my phone decides it won't boot but goes into recovery mode. I'd sure like to know why that is...cause it's piss poor design given the phone was working fine before I shut it down. It's almost too complicated for its own good. I don't feel there is ever a reason to put me in position as a consumer to force me to recover my phone from a back-up for no apparent reason. I'm sure there is a reason some highly technical Apple software programmer wrote into the code that a consumer doesn't have any clue about and then proceeds into a wasteland of hours lost trying to come up with a solution. Again, I thank you Apple for this "smart" phone that has made my life easier at this particular moment. lol. /rant off

Go to the apple store. They do have some tricks - it helped with my wife's phone not too long ago.

it isn't 'normal' and sometimes this sort of thing happens with electronics. That's kinda why the ability to back up exists. Really sucks about the pics hopefully you can get them back.

My Iphone 3Gs shuts down after being off the charger for five minutes. Last I phone I'll every great. Between the already terrible battery life, the fact you cant just buy a new battery and no flash video...
