think against some dudes you have to "enable" charges. There are those types that think any kind of contact against an offensive player is a foul, even if they initiate all the contact and a lot of it is really aggressive and dangerous contact. I go Shane Battier vs. those types.
TheRealist, lol. I hate it when guys try to legislate their way to a win. Most pickup players are pretty good at calling fouls on themselves, but you'll occasionally get a guy calling touch fouls, carries, and illegal picks when the game goes against them. I think it's actually worse when the guy is on my own team. I'll end up arguing against him on calls and stop giving him the ball just to minimize how many calls he can make.
I don't think I've ever called a foul for myself in any pick up game. I just allow the defender to call it just like I will call it when I hacked somebody. They only foul I would even think about calling is a foul on my arm trying to release the ball from my shot.
I have drawn probably 10 charges in pickup games over time against various guys, up to 1.5x my weight. No one has gotten hurt, though that time I hit the back of my head against some guy's knee stung for awhile. I agree with some of the other posters that what happened in the OP's case is more of an undercut than trying to draw a charge in which case you have every reason to be angry. One reason to outlaw charges in pickup games is that people don't know how to do it and hurt other people. That dude should be told never to do that again. However, I think after watching Shane and Chuck do their thing for so long, I have a good idea how to do it safely. I find it's my best defense against those guys who drive recklessly to the basket.
If you attempt to draw a charge in a pick-up basketball game you suck and deserve to get your a** kicked. Period. They don't belong on the court, send them to the alternate court to just shoot around and play horse or around the world.
i honestly have never even thought about charges in pickup games...ever. You can get your ass kicked for doin something like that.
hey some old people got game.. I love to pick up some of the old guys on my team at the gym I play at. They know how to play the game.. do the dirty work.. box out.. and pass well. A lot better than the young hot shot kid who wants to go iso every single damn play and just jack up bad shots.
I only drew charges once in a pick up game. It was outta pure frustration. One of my friend has this playing style of bulldozing his way to the rim with his shoulders lowered and out of control. If you come in contact with him, he calls a foul. He kept on calling foul on me on 3 consecutive plays. On the fourth play, I'm just like **** it, I took a charge and we both went flying. No one was hurt though because it was indoors.
This gets my goat Lately I have had people trying throw horrible passes through traffic and it hits the defender in the leg. Keep in mind they didn't even know a pass is coming in their direction. Guess what the offensive players have been calling "Kickball"....I mean really, Kickball has to be intentional. You should not be rewarded with another possession instead of a turnover. But its just pickup basketball so I don't argue about it on the court...just in my head
So, was it a charge or a blocking foul? Calling charges in a pickup game is pretty weak unless it is blatently obvious....been playing for more than 30 years, and can't recall very many charges being called etc. DD
I once played against a guy who tried to take a charge twice in a game. We all kicked him off the court, including the guys playing on his team. What drives me nuts is guys who run into you trying to draw a foul everytime they go for a layup! just last week i was guarding this guy who started posting up on me, and as he turned around to shoot, i put both hands up and he hesitated, good D on my part of course. he bumped into me and threw his hands into mine (Kobe style), and immediately called a foul! I was pissed off!!!
I hate when they call that in the NBA too....a defensive player should be entitled to their position and standing. It is ruining the game, same with carrying the ball, it disgusts me how they have taken good defense out of the hands of the players. DD
If it were a true "Kobe" style maneuver, you would've gotten smacked in the face from an unnatural basketball motion.
How about playing Zone defense in a pick up game? I have been playing out here in the bay area, and it seem very common that people play zone defense in pick up games.
Thank God I haven't ran into these type of pansies on a court, jeesh. I really don't get angry or over aggressive on the court but the kinds of experiences I'm reading about here would drive me into commenting a "flagrant".
