You said Spoiler Which implies that you expect them to be significantly better at recruiting. I don't think anyone said that they'll do worse recruiting-wise unless they prove to be mediocre (around 500) but expecting them to recruit better are pretty high hopes. This is why A&M would be better off on the football field by staying in the Big 12-2.
Sure, but that's different than "propel A&M in the top 5 and over Texas seemingly every year". If you get better or get new selling points, you help compete with UT, regardless of whether you're actually outrecruiting them overall. I'd disagree with this part - I don't think A&M is nearly as good as people seem to think they are. They had a lucky (and ref-assisted) win against Nebraska last year, and one very impressive win vs OU. Otherwise, they lost their other 3 games to ranked teams, 2 by pretty large margins. I think they are as likely to go back to 7-5 as they are to be contending for a Big12 title this year at 10-2 or so. To me, the move to the SEC is about building a unique brand identity for themselves that is not "UT's little brother". They are establishing an identity in an extremely stable conference with a bunch of like-minded schools similar to them. The real impact of it - good or bad - is going to be over 5, 10, 20 years rather than whether their football team is winning 2 or 3 years from now. I think the most amusing thing about all this is the people who say "Aggies are obsessed with UT" and simultaneously mock them for leaving behind their rivalry with UT.
i'm so tired of hearing the back and forth about this on the radio. It makes sense and IMO was a smart move from a security standpoint. Why people are so anti this move and can't see the reasonableness of it if is beyond me.
To really compete with UT, you better be top 5 but I get what you're trying to say. For the rest of your post, I'll save Ziggy the time and just call you... Spoiler Sucker
I never expected them to be significantly better. What I've been saying all along is that the move might make them better. But people are out here saying TAMU cant compete on the recruiting field with the SEC schools, meanwhile, they're ranked in the top 10 in recruiting. In other words, whether having SEC status helps or not, TAMU is still fine as far as recruiting is concerned.
I think most of us are. It does make sense for A&M. Let them leave and try to figure out how to make the Big 12 -2, 3 a better conference.
That's with your progression in the current conference. There are a lot of unknowns that will be determined after 2012 and so on...
There were 2 different TAMU teams on the field last year. One with a hobbled Jerrod Johnson at the helm, the other with a level-headed Jeff Fuller playing QB. People are picking them because their O-line will be among the top in the nation and their RB/WR positions are among the deepest in the nation. Not really arguing with you right now BTW, just adding my 2 cents.
You're getting at them struggling in-conference and becoming bottom feeders? Possibly, but this current recruiting streak will continue. 2013's guys will be the ones garnered from last year's Cotton Bowl run. A BCS game this year + the oncoming national media attention should carry at least until 2014. And even if they do wind up struggling, its not like I expect Tennesse to never emerge as a top program again despite their current struggles in the SEC.
Nope just tired of the threats/bull****...if they want to take their school to the SEC because ultimately they can not compete with Texas....they will be making their own situation even worse. At least they can compete in the Big 12, they will get TRUCKED in the SEC.... Sometimes jealousy makes you do stupid things, this would be one of those times. But hey, they are aggies, right? DD
Again, TAMU doesn't care about UT, its the only school in the Big 12 that doesn't from what it looks like. They just want whats best for them. Hell, they're the program that has offered to continue the rivalry. UT is the one throwing a fit (I wonder why). Also, what entity that is responsible for transplanting TAMU has this UT penis envy you speak of anyways? We get that UT is excited about an easier road to a BCS game, that's understandable. But why all the whining about TAMU leaving?
Oh yeah - I know there are legitimate reasons for their ranking. I'm just a bit suspicious - I feel like a lot is being extrapolated from about a 5 game stretch of football. I hope A&M is good, for the same reason I think A&M will enjoy its time in the SEC - more ranked opponents for Texas means more exciting games for me.
You don't understand. You are evaluating conferences on made up values. Those programs have more prestige. What are you measuring that on besides your own opinion? 1) OU 8) Texas AM 9) OK State 10) Nebraska 11) Wisconsin 17) Michigan St 18 Ohio State 3 Big 12 teams are ahead of 4 Big 10 teams. Nebraska hasn't even played a game in the big 10. How does this not directly contradict your assertion that Big 10 teams get the nod over big 12 teams? Everyone is tied 0-0. I'm sure this is why you think it's so dumb that Notre Dame would join the big 12. Why would they? The big 12 is a sucky league! Fact is it makes a lot of financial sense which is the motivating factor behind these decisions. THat's why no one really wants Boise, TCU or Houston. Your whole point is that, "Oh big 10 is awesome and Big 12 sucks!" It's not based on data. The big 12 has been one of the top performing conferences in the last 10 years. Everyone assumes it's crumbling but no one knows what they have been planning behind closed doors. BYU would be a very very good pickup. The whole state of Utah watches BYU. The conference is strong. OU and Texas will not leave each other. TT and OSU will not leave OU and Texas. This is one site's attempt to rank conferences based on QUANTIFIABLE data and not Ziggy's personal thoughts over what team he think has a more storied program. http://realtimerpi.com/football/ncaaf_conf_Men.html
Except Notre Dame hasn't ever chased the money before. Each Big10 school makes more than Notre Dame does now. ND would make more being a member of the Big10 than they get from their current contract as-is. And they could essentially continue playing their current schedule. They aren't trading national games against teams like Michigan and USC for games against Iowa State and K-State. It's just not the Notre Dame way. A conference's health is not simply measured by it's success on the football field. A minimum of five Big12 members (Nebraska, Colorado, A&M, Missou, Tech) wanted out in the last 14 months or so. Those probably include the 3rd through 6th most valuable teams to the conference - that's not healthy, by any definition. Teams from the Big12 are asking to join the SEC, Pac10, and Big10 - no one from those conferences is asking to join the Big12. teams like SMU and UH are the ones asking to join. And at this point, we still have no idea if BYU is interested or not. But losing Nebraska and A&M and replacing them with BYU is no way a net upgrade.
