Tristan - I will definitely hit you up when I do visit go/there. I do plan on going to UT and majoring in business whether its transferring after a year or being accepted in as a business major. If you don't mind me asking, what is your plan after you graduate? Yak - Let me know if I'm misreading your post wrong, but people who are outside of the top ten percent have a better chance than I do because I'm not top 2%? TheRealist - What did your resume when you applied look like? Should I still put business as my first choice? And if yes, I'm deciding between economics and advertising for my second. Any suggestions? I will take advantage of the top 8/9% rule and go to UT regardless of what major I have to take.
If you're not in the top 10% its more or less impossible to get into business. So no you're not worse off. I transferred into business but honestly I thought the whole experience was overrated. Undergraduate business schools are a waste in my mind. I wish I'd have done economics instead of finance. Plus if you aren't doing something that requires a tangible skillset like accounting or finance then I almost feel like you could find something more productive to major in. (I'm referring to majors like management or international business) The one good perk of the business school is having access to the McCombs job board. Internships were so much easier to get through the business school than anywhere else. I got a couple of great internships that really were good learning experiences. (I learned VBA Excel coding in one my internships and that has paid huge dividends since then because no one knows VBA apparently) Also to answer your question, put business as your 1st choice and hope for the best. It honestly wont even matter since there's tons of overlap across majors and you have to take the same pre-reqs anyway. Just spend your first year taking classes that you weren't able to test out of with APs. (i.e. a foreign language, calculus, US history, etc.. They're all pretty easy and on top of that you won't lose any time off of your business major.
would any current or ut alumni allow me to use there ut eid and passeword to browse the business and advertising job site... email is cthannoon@yahoo.com would really appreciate it
Sounds good — UT is a great school nonetheless. In fact, it was only after I was rejected from McCombs that I realized how many incredible majors and colleges there are here. So many are ranked in the top 10 nationally that it's incredible. Well, I am a unique situation, thus the reason for the independent study so I don't actually go to classes in Austin. I'm the co-founder of a travel company, Want Me Get Me, that's about to launch worldwide. We're based in NYC, although I'm in SF for investors and the tech community. And I'd still suggest putting business as your first choice. Advertising is significantly harder to get into than economics, so I'd go ahead and try it. It would be easier to transfer from a program into economics than into advertising. And advertising is ranked #1 nationally right now (http://advertising.utexas.edu/news/new-study-ranks-texas-advertising-1-advertising-program-us).
The school you go to for undergrad, as long as it is one of the top 3-4 in Texas, doesn't matter much. It matters more for grad school. I would say that if you went to any of the 4 schools listed (UT, A&M, Baylor, or SMU) you would have just about an equal chance of getting hired when you graduate, especially if you keep your grades up. In fact, both UT and A&M have such huge alumni networks, they might actually be the two best places to go in Texas to get a job when you graduate.
If he stays in Texas, TAMU & UT will hold the most value undergrad-wise. Outside of Texas, UT carries more weight than TAMU. SMU is private, so its a different ballgame. I wouldn't include Baylor on that list even if it was public...
geeimsobored -Thanks for your input. If you had a chance to chose which major you majored in, would you still have chosen business or the other majors that you've wrote? (Management, international business) Tristan - Just checked the website of your business. Hopefully one day I'll be able to be in the "right circles," haha. On my application, they only give out first choice and second choice. Lets say I don't get into both business and advertising, what happens next? Do i have to reapply to a different major or will they give me a list of major I can major in to attend? Ziggy - I wouldn't have minde transferring to SpringWoods couple years back. I knew several people in that school, but most of them graduated by now. (I'm assuming you weren't being sarcastic, but you could have very well been) Supermac - I've visited Austin a year ago, and I've been to several parties in College Station. I don't think I could stand College Station and that environment (no offense to anyone, just doesn't fit me and my wants/personality). I just really want to experience the UT/Austin life for some reason.
Haha sounds good. Shoot me an email and I'll have my assistant put you on the beta invite list. If you don't get into either your first or second choice majors (theoretically business or advertising in your case), you'll automatically be placed as undeclared in the College of Liberal Arts (COLA) if you still get into the university (which sounds like it won't be a problem for you). Then you can go through your entire first year as undeclared, take the general core classes for UT (which you'd have to take anyways), and then apply for transfer to business or advertising. tm
