I'm curious to see which electricity companies y'all use. My current contract with Reliant Energy is up in September and I know we are paying a really high rate (this wasn't my original contract).

I've gone to powertochoose.com and although this is a good start, I'm not sure what to base my decision on (besides cheaper prices). I'm curious about these companies as far as customer service goes and such. I been to a few review sites but I always feel a lot of these can be bogus since usually only an angry customer will make an effort to trash these companies on the net somewhere.

I was currently looking at Pennywise Power (9.1 cent/kWh) and Dynowatt Energy (9.6 cent/kWh). Both of these are 12 month contracts. Thanks for any help.

Believe it or not, but Reliant is at 8.75 right now with a 12 month contract....

I've been with StarTex for a few years now. I've got 100% wind power for $.09/kwh. I'm in Round Rock, so your rates would likely be different.

Great service from these guys, though.

Really? I just talked to a rep and the lowest she was willing to compromise was 9.9.

I've been using Amigo but my contract is almost up. Any other input? Thanks for starting the thread, EP.

You have to sign up online for some to get the lowest rate.

I recently signed up with Amigo and the rate was 8.8, I signed up online and everything went very smooth. Rates look higher now...

I have Reliant and I talked with a rep a few months back about my rate being pretty high. They knocked me down to close to the same rate that cwebbster posted.

I would just keep trying reps til' you got the right one.

dude, these guys sale you 100% wind power, and if they say that they buy all their power from wind, but it doesn't mean you are getting wind power.

but if you are into pushing green energy, i would suggest you support one of these companies. i worked for greenmountain and they buy all their power from wind sources and they are competitive also

Dammit, beat me to it. What other Electric Company has to have a groovy psychedelic theme song and Morgan Freeman as a company executive:

besides the rate, watch out for those rip off "monthly service fee" or some will charge you 7, 8 bucks if you go under their minimum kwh usage....

Disclaimer: I work for Direct Energy. But don't construe anything I say as speaking for the company.

Most REPs get thin margins on new customers to buy the customer. And then they get a much fatter margin on the renewal. That's what Reliant is doing with their 9.9 rate.

If you want to come to Direct, I have a friends and family rate you can use. It's 9.3 right now in Houston for 12 months. It's a big company (biggest or second biggest retailer in the US), won't default, and won't screw up your bill too often. And, I think I get a gift card or something if you sign up (full disclosure).

    Go here: http://www2.directenergy.com/friendsandfamily/default.aspx

Use code 'family.' Put Sam Gafford as the reference.
