So we've been getting pretty steady rain here in Charleston for past 2 hrs or so. Supposed to continue 'til about 9 or 10. Wind has been strong but nothing crazy. Then realize that Charleston is nearly 200 miles from the storms eye and getting fringe rain bands that have already been over land for a good bit...
I don't think it will be bad at all, the storm is going to be weakened, moving really fast, and the strongest part will be to the east of us. They are turning the power, gas, and water off to my building to try to force everyone to leave. Ridiculous. Now I have to buy freakin candles and flashlights for a tropical storm? I am not evacuating for a freakin tropical storm, this is ridiculous.
This storm will not be moving that fast in comparison to other storms, especially ones this size. The part of the storm EAST of the eye IS THE the second strongest part of the storm with the high surge, strong wind, and heavy rain. That part of the storm that often causes more damage than the eye normally does because it is not all the less powerful than the eye, and lasts longer without an a calming that the eye can provide.
I'm in Philly, rain just started up pretty hard. I'll be so pissed if/when my power goes out for an extended period. Couldn't believe they shut down the AC Casinos, I don't think I was alive the last time that.

Looking like the Outer Banks of Carolina (barely east of the eye) is going to take the worst of the storm right before/as it weakens back down to a Cat-1. Guessing Hampton Rds VA will take on flooding and power loss, but nothing like Isabella. Maybe even less depending on how it tracks. DC should just get dumped with rain, Philly a good heavy storm, and NYC a strong tropical storm with mild flooding. I am having to control myself from "internet b**** slapping" all the East Coast folks on facebook acting as if the Day After Tomorrow storm is about to hit.
heading to pawleys island, sc tomorrow. looks like we should be ok and they avoided it. I actually just saw some lady on cnn reporting from there and it wasn't bad.

It is impossible for NYC to get the brunt of this. If the east part of the storm were to hit NYC, it would mean that the eye was over NJ for many many hours and the thing would weaken by a lot. LI is going to get the worst of it, and Bloomberg and others are going to look like idiots for crying wolf. I've been through Cat 4 hurricanes living in the south and this is not nearly anything like that.
I can deal with bridges/tunnels closed, trains/subways not running, basically the city shutdown for a day or two.. But I can't deal with losing my power!!! candles and eating tuna out of a can would suck!!
Seeing the OBX reporting has reinforced my belief that Obama declaring states of emergencies all the way up to Massachusetts is ridiculous. The overreaction and premature panic is somehow sillier than us during the ice storms 7 months ago. Outer Banks just got it worse than anybody north possibly could...and it wasn't that bad. Minor damage, minor flood waters, but nothing close to devastating.
The reported storm surge in NC is only 3 feet. NYC has nothing to fear from Irene. As Irene goes through the cooler water, it will weaken quickly. It's only a cat 1 now, and North Carolina got the worst of it and survived. Manhattan has nothing to fear from storm surge. It would look like the high tide has risen 1-2 feet above normal, at the worst.
Fear mongering media and opportunistic politicians are more dangerous than this hurricane could possibly be.
Anything for ratings. It certainly is not responsible journalism. Like the 9/11 fearmongering, anytime a hurricane threatens from now on it's full-on panic. Disagree with those guys and man, you're just stupid.
Oh and I love how they were cooking the books with the storm path. They started with direct hit on Florida then constantly moved east to keep up with the actual movement of the storm. "80 million people impacted" really ramped up the fear. Pure madness.
