It all ultimately comes down to E&P, though. Some of them are diversified by field, though even then you'll find a lot of independent E&P companies are highly concentrated.

Apple isn't exclusively iphone. there's also the ipad. there's also itunes. there's also macs. they have a majority of their eggs in a comprehensive platform of products all centered around a similar backbone... same as E&P.

The real point is, it's not that their eggs are all in one basket that is the issue, it's that they have the right eggs... which they currently do... but, again, which is the same as a lot of companies (and different than a lot of companies, too).

Google is far from all search. And even if it were all search, that is a service, not a product.

AAPL is a consumer discretionary company. Hell, they are more of a fashion accessory company than technology really. They went from a music player, to adding a phone to their music player, to basically making it a bigger version. And hell, its worked out so well that they are the most valuable company in the world. But its only worked because Steve Jobs keeps hatching those golden eggs.

They cannot stay stagnant like an E&P company. They cannot keep flipping the same burgers like a restaurant. They can't even simply update their existing products to version whatever.0. Because if they did, what happened to the Ipod will happen to the rest of their products, become stale from an oversaturated consumer. The only way to keep afloat is to keep on hatching new eggs. And my point is, their golden goose is gone.

Apple fans are a little sensitive now. Give them a break, he didn't mean it.

Heck, I feel sorry for him too, in my house we have 4 Iphones, an Ipad, and I have a Mac Book Pro, along with a lot of PC stuff, but I like Apple products a lot.

Yeah your comment was not insensitive at all. Some fanboys are just lashing out. I don't think there are many people that don't have sympathy for cancer patients.

Unless John Stockton was the patient.

Man Jobs must be just stupid rich with all the apple stock he must have. He'd probably trade it all to be healthy though, pretty sad.

fine, all advertising. a majority of which is derived from search. i didn't say anything about services or products... i said all eggs in one basket.

to that end, if a product came along that completely blew google out of the water from a search perspective, and caught on (google's other services primarily offer defense against this), google's business would be devastated.

I agree Jobs was essential to the success of Apple's rise. But not being able to maintain what they've built and/or even continue to grow from it isn't a foregone conclusion. Moreover, I think you underestimate/underappreciate what Jobs and Apple have created. Calling them a fashion accessory company as opposed to a tech company completely misses the mark... and I think you know it. The iphone was considerable more than a music player with a phone... it was completely revolutionary, even to the extent smaller tech players were getting close to what the iphone eventually created, the modern smartphone market.

but that's neither her nor there. Apple is in a great position, at its core. They have very talented human resources. The loss of Jobs may ultimately become a self fulfilling prophesy that leads to a lack of continued success... or Apple may completely screw it up themselves. Who knows.

E&P companies and burger chains can't "stay stagnant" either. The Five Guys and Smashburgers of the world absolutely take share from Burger King, Wendy's, etc... and those chains have to continually innovate to continue to push growth. Sometimes it works... McDonalds adding on coffee/breakfast drinks, or snack wraps... sometimes it doesn't... remember the Arch Deluxe? McDonald's has continued to innovate around its core product, the burger, and is far and away the largest food company in the world. Burger, Wendy's haven't had nearly the same degree of success. Quizno's is another easy example in the food space. Ultimately all about sandwiches, but failure to stay ahead of the game, poor management, etc. and they've been on a downward spiral for a few years.

Point being, again, this is about the resources left at Apple, not the fact that they are so tied into iphones.

Hopefully he's fine and just can't handle the grind, taking time for himself and family. It doesn't seem like that would be the case with someone so driven and important to the company, but I'd like to think best case scenario in instances where people's health is concerned.

Will be interesting to see what it means to the company, whether they are more or less successful and in whatever industry. For someone who appreciates and uses apple products, it has to make you wonder.

I do wish I'd put that 5k on apple when the g3's came out and shares were at $30ish... but I'd have cashed it in by now even if I had.

if you simply don't agree that apple isn't a superior product, just simply don't agree. its not that big of a deal to me either way. i just know people in creative industries like to work with apple because of their reliability, if you don't agree fine.

The difference is that they don't have a "soda guy" running the show now.

Yeah, pretty soon, they'll have keyboards, expansion memory, and faster processors... they'll be laptops again. ;)

At one time I recall someone had created a projection keyboard, that would project onto the table and you could faux type with it....that would be a great addition to the tablets.
