That's not funny, I live less than 50 miles from new madrid. Seriously, it is definitely scary living in memphis because all they talk about is the big one is coming. I'm not ready for that.
A "wimpy comet" which a few people on the internet claim is a brown dwarf star or an alien controlled ship which causes earthquakes.. Others say is Nibiru or that Nibiru is coming behind it. We'll see soon enough as in the next couple of months is supposed to cause major disasters.
Um... for anyone worried about Elinin or whatever, take a good dose of the straight dope: http://www.universetoday.com/87619/worried-about-comet-elenin-faqs-from-ian-musgrave/
I wasn't trying to be funny, not after having read The Rift, by Walter Jon Williams, a work that should have been more widely read and cries out for a movie version. It's a "disaster" novel, a "what if" that posits another New Madrid. It starts out with a short take on the original quake, which was one of the most massive, destructive, powerful quakes in American history, giving you a taste of a future potential New Madrid quake. Then, we're in the "present day," and we have another one with incredible consequences. It's very believable when you consider the massive population in the area, the berms and dikes holding in the Mississippi during so much of its length, the cities, the nuclear power plants, and the fight for survival of some interesting characters. I really enjoyed it. Williams is a terrific SF writer (read his trilogy, Dread Empire's Fall... fantastic!), so this was a departure for him. It'll scare the hell out of you.
I know where it came from, and I know that large-mouthed basso swallowed it hook, line, and sinker: http://www.slate.com/content/slate/...e_saga_or_why_fact_checking_is_important.html
Thanks for the recap! LOL we will see. ON GMA this morning, they showed videos of dogs barking right before an earthquake struck. pretty amazing stuff. they showed this video of a dog sleeping on the couch in VA and woke up barking then the earthquake hit.
http://news.yahoo.com/strong-6-8-magnitude-quake-shakes-central-peru-180732820.html one just hit Peru.
I was at Reagan Airport when this happened. Actually, I was either driving to or on a shuttle bus. Had no idea it happened, actually checked-in to my flight and then got stuck at Terminal A security because they weren't letting anyone in. That's when I noticed the small amount of debris and people talking about the quake. Then they made us go outside, then inside, then outside, then inside...then everybody ran outside across the street because some TSA or whoever smelled gas. So I just kept going until I got to Terminal B/C and everything was fine there...just delayed flights and a few cancellations. I just decided to bounce and fly later.
There was also an earthquake in the Bay Area last night around 11PMish PST... 3.9 I think. And then another one around 10AM this morning... a 3.5 if I remember correctly. Pretty crazy. I don't remember the last time I felt an earthquake of that size... there's supposed to be a big one coming up too.
There's a 3.0 and bigger somewhere in California almost every week http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/Quakes/quakes_big.html I don't think quakes are a laughing matter. Every tremor is worrisome. Just to show that the crust is always moving, just we don't always notice. Or it depends if it happens in remote or dense locations.
