(Reuters) - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said Sunday he will stay in Tripoli "until the end" and called on his supporters around the country to help liberate the capital from a rebel offensive.

He said in an audio message played over state television he was "afraid that Tripoli will burn" and he said he would provide weapons to supporters to fight off the rebels.

    (Writing by Richard Valdmanis)

It was nice knowing you Gaddafi. Rebels have already broken the barrier on Tripoli, it's just a matter of time before they get their hands on him. Gaddafi gave order to open the weapons depots and arm the masses, but it doesn't look like the military will follow through with the order. It is about to get crazy there.

Gadaffi will be taken out, no question. I just hope these rebels can figure out how to set up and run a democracy.

Rumors floating around that his Presidential Guard surrendered to rebels in the last few hours, meaning that this could already be over. If true, you'd think we'd get confirmation within a few hours.

they had rumors about that before the article i posted dropped. I'm not sure that is the case. Hard to tell at this moment, but i'll put my money on Gaddafi issuing that statement, order the release of weapons, and head out the back door in a private jet.

I don't take Gaddafi as that heroic.

I think people should be more worried about infighting within the rebel forces after Gahdaffi is gone.

Good to see Mommar Guddafi go, but it sucks that another tribe is going to be a puppet to the countries involved with the NATO operation. I'm sure another more appeasing dictator will take Guddafi's place.

The rebel forces mostly comprise of a tribe from Beenghazi, they have the support of NATO, I'm sure they will find a way to assign power among themselves. I'm sure the future leader is already chosen by those secret agents/forces giving "consultation" to the rebels in Benghazi. Making it appear natural and democratic is the hard part.

or Saudi Arabia. Every time a government gets toppled in the Middle East, the rest of the region makes a point to influence the process. The eventual democratic elections in all of these countries will say a lot. You can guarantee that the Saudis and other gulf states will pour money into try and influence the process. When an Arab country holds an election every other country will make it a point to try and vote in it with their own money.

I hope they capture him without killing him. I think it's only fair that he's humiliated rather than getting an easy death.

The Gaddhafi spokesperson had ONE decent point though last night. What happens to the minority Gaddhafi supporters? Do they get to participate in the new democratic process? If so, why are you murdering their leader rather than taking him to court?

While I have no sympathy for anyone from the Gaddhafi regime, I do think that Gaddhafi supporters should get some guarantees that they will be included in the democratic process fairly.

They already captured his sons, so it does seem that that is their intent. I would imagine the only reason they'd kill him is if he's shooting back at them.

Not true about the United States. The only people the rebels are going to allow in for oil or any thing else is the Italians. Not the Americans or Saudi's...

UPDATE 3-ENI leads Libya oil race, rebels warn Russia,China

MILAN/LONDON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Italian oil company Eni led the charge back into Libya on Monday as rebels swept into capital Tripoli, hailing the end of Muammar Gaddafi's rule and warning Russian and Chinese firms of contract revisions.

    ..

"We don't have a problem with western countries like Italians, French and UK companies. But we may have some political issues with Russia, China and Brazil," Abdeljalil Mayouf, information manager at Libyan rebel oil firm AGOCO, told Reuters.

The comment signals the potential for a major setback for Russia, China and Brazil, which opposed tough sanctions on Gaddafi or pressed for more talks, and could mean a loss of billions of dollars worth of oil exploration and construction contracts in the African nation.

Shares in European firms -- Eni , Austria's OMV and France's Total -- rose by 3-5 percent, despite a modest fall in the price of oil LCOc1, on hopes the firms would be able to quickly re-establish output from Libya."

Sure we MIGHT buy some oil, but that only hurts us in the money department. Only thing the United States is going to benefit from is the thanks from Libya.

I hope they are given fair trials and judged accordingly. Then, if they are guilty, they should not have the right to vote.
