I'm pretty depressed about things in general and have been for a while. The anti-depressants I'm on seem to be doing not very much, but yet I've tried a lot of them. It's a very long story, but I want help... I don't want to feel like this at night. I'm tired of my current life, I'm tired of my chronic neck pain, I'm tired of my chronic depression, I'm tired about my school situation. Everything.

My psychiatrist and I have talked frequently about different combos of anti-depressants and such, and even TMS. The problem with Neurostar TMS therapy is it's expensive as **** (I believe my psychiatrist quoted $10000 to $12000) and insurances haven't figured out what to do with it coverage wise; thus, they are reluctant to reimburse you anything until you've emptied your checking account and appealed their denial 40 times. We don't have the money, but I'm slowly losing hope for not being depressed and would almost sell my soul for it now.

I have United Healthcare (Value Options is their mental health branch), and was wondering if anyone here in the Houston area has tried this treatment for depression and how was your battle with your insurance like if so?

Or if anyone knows anyone in the Houston area, I'd really really appreciate if you could ask them.

I don't get it. This is a message board of 40,000 members but yet I get two replies to a topic of serious depression? My faith in humanity wanes with results like this. Who cares right?

You are not going to get too many responses Saturday morning.

Never head of TMS, but I really hope you find something that works for you.

    Hey man,

sorry you are going through this, depression is no easy task to deal with but although therapies such as deep brain stimulation and TMS seem like quick fixes, there are other options and even though people have had amazing results with the two previously mentioned things, they do not work in all cases. that being said, GOOD and EFFECTIVE psychotherapy in conjunction with the right medication management is still the tried and true way of managing depression. chronic pain always seems to make things worse and is a lot of the time directly related to the severity of depression. you can PM me if you'd like to talk about whats going on in life/just to vent. totally up to you. i know you are looking for personal experiences with TMS but i'm just saying that its important not to look necessarily for a "quick fix." depression is a chronic, relapsing illness that has its roots in our thought processes and our past experiences, combined with each individuals different brain anatomy and chemistry. again i cannot stress the importance of EFFECTIVE psychotherapy before emptying your bankroll on something like TMS or DBS. take care man

That attitude will get you nowhere.

    1. 40,000 people aren't on the hangout all day, every day. In fact, it's a work-week board. People browse during the work day.
    2. This doesn't seem like something that you would know about unless you really needed it. So it's a specialized treatment in a specialized field.

It sucks that you have depression, man. People are here for you.

I suggest finding a depression board, joining and asking there. Probably a much higher % of people know about it.

My brother is getting an PHD in psychology with a specialization in neural feedback. I'm forwarding him your post and will let you know what he has to say. I know he's working on his comps right now, so he might not be able to respond ASAP.

see he called out the bbs and then you kindly responded with this. It's like when snow white makes the pie for grumpy. The chosen one is the grumpy of this website ,so be sure to help him, the squeaky wheel always gets the grease, as usual. geez.

Im just messing with you, it was just kinda funny how he was crying that no one cared, and then you chimed in with that. it would have been better if your brother worked at MIT and knew dr Shuffhausen.

The truth is OP I don't know what that treatment is.. Of the 40000 on here probably only a real 1000 are on at any one time ,and even then you are asking about something very specific and medical... unless it is a cross street in houston or the name of derrick chevious 3rd cat ,then you can't always get the asap response you are looking for.

By the tone your post, and the little insight I have on you OP, I first want you to relax, and then take the next step of getting laid as soon as possible. I dont mean this in a condescending way it's the truth ,you need some good ole fashion boning. Once you get past that ,and get laid I will say what I was originally going to say in when I first saw this thread---

I will be your friend for $5,000. That's half of what that treatment will cost.

    I will start by caring.

I will listen to what you say and really look to turn this depression around for you.

I will make a concerted effort to put time into each week between now and Christmas really focusing on helping you out. sure I have a job and other things going on but for $5000 I promise I will really really try to help you. As part that all I will research the dog sh7t out of this therapy, and even find you the same therapy for like 2000 to 3000..Then minus that from the original 10 you were going to spend ,plus my 5000, only puts you at 7000 to 8000 ,and youve gotten your treatment, and you get someone that cares,I get 5000, and youve really taken a step forward out of that depression !! Consider the first piece of advice about the getting laid thing as my first sort of *free* consultation, and a sample of the life building advice you need right now and will be getting... and you save $2000 !! whaddaya say ??

I've never heard of TMS. I've seen ECT work wonders, though, and a brief Google search indicates that the two therapies have similar rates of effectiveness. ECT is quite often a covered procedure, but I don't know anything about your insurance.

Personally, I'm a firm believer in psychotherapy. But again, I've seen ECT do amazing things for chronic depression.

Best of luck to you, man.

I overreacted last night, plain and simple. For the snippy attitude I had, I'm surprised more people didn't snap back. For those that replied with helpful stuff, I appreciate it.

Doesn't ECT cause short-term memory loss?

Just to put in my 2 cents. May i suggest also meditation and to research sungazing. There are many videos on sungazing on youtube. These are two things that may help you relax. Every little bit helps. Good luck to you Chosen.

I have never personally seen/heard of/witnessed this, but I am aware of the controversies of ECT, which also include long-term memory loss. The simple fact is that the majority of psychiatric clinicians view it as a safe procedure....after all, if a large chunk of patients reported such things ECT simply wouldn't be used at all.

When considering anything like this, it is ALWAYS better to start with the least invasive treatment first. Typically, psych patients start with a combination of therapy and (maybe) meds. Then hospitalization, and so on and so forth. Bottom line: THESE ARE ALL THINGS YOU NEED TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR BECAUSE ONLY YOU AND YOUR DOCTOR CAN DETERMINE WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR TREATMENT.

If you're not in talk therapy, you might want to look into it. I've seen that work wonders, too.
