Jesse Wierzbicki is 1-5 with an RBI and a run scored today. UNC led Stanford 6-1, but the Cardinal answered with 4 in the 8th to cut the lead to 1. They are now in a weather delay.

George Springer singled and took 2nd on an error. He scored the first run of the game for UConn.

The 1 hit was an infield single.

ASU center fielder and 8th-round pick of the Orioles, Johnny Ruettiger, is Rudy's nephew.

I watched George Springer make an over the shoulder, Willie Mays type catch on the warning track in deep center in tonight's UConn/SCarolina game.

And the Astros 19th rd pick the lefty closer from Arizona St pitched a few innings against Texas and he is a STUD. Nomar gave us love for selecting him.

By all accounts Springer is a very athletically talented player who if he put it all together would be a fantastic player.

The thing that bothers me about him is that I question what skills will continue to develop considering he's already a college junior. I.e. how much better will his hitting get?

He really breaks the mold. You expect a raw, high ceiling high school position player. You expect a polished, albeit lower ceiling college position player; because all the high ceiling players were drafted after high school. Springer manages to be a high ceiling college player who is still incredibly raw. Thus I have no idea what to expect from him. Given the Astros track record with toolsy players I'm definitely worried.

I suppose this should come as no surprise to me, but I really wonder how the Stros intend to gain ground on other clubs when one of the areas that needs the most attention (the draft) gets less spent on it than the MLB average. I mean, Pittsburgh (17M) and Washington (15M) look to be totally on-board with rebuilding. But the Stros (5.5M)

And in 2008 we spent $65 ? WTF? And from 2007-11 we rank 21st?

Seems like they did a great job signing their picks this year, considering they signed 16 of their top 17 picks and came in under the league average.

Are you actually complaining about this year? If so, are you saying they should have given more money to the guys they signed?

Comparing us to a team that had to pay for the first pick, gave their first 2nd rounder 1st pick money is very unfair.

The Astros did spend some money in international FA. The Pirates signed 24 of their picks.

We spent $65.13 on the 2007 draft?

Did we draft a hot dog vendor?

Not only were the past two drafts successful (at least when it comes to signing their picks), they have also signed a few international players (including Ovando to a 2.6+ million dollar bonus) and they have acquired 15 players over the past year by trading their most marketable veterans.

Why exactly do you think they are not on board with rebuilding?

I was going to try and find an image of one as a joke and my search brought me to a pic of Charlie Kerfeld on this page. Some good laughs at a team that is sadly laughable right now.

No, im not saying we should have given the picks we signed more money. Im saying that we should have spent the money to sign the 13 or so picks we didnt sign. But more so, its the years previous to this one that seemed the most appalling.

Is the report accurate that we spent $65 in 2008 ? Thats criminal.

Assuming you read my entire post, I made several comparisons, only one of which was to what the biggest spenders were. I didnt say we should have spent 17M either. The comparison that I thought was most meaningful was to to the league average for this year and how we ranked during the entire 2007-11 period. I feel 21 out of 30 is a dismal showing for a rebuilding club.

Read my other post, but what happened to the 13 guys we didnt sign (im not sure the exact number).
