Wow... both big news. What was HP thinking when they tried to introduce yet another device with a different OS when Apple, Android, and Blackberry have such a huge share of the handheld and tablet market?

Yeah, they're dropping off all sorts of bombs today. Apparently they've killed off WebOS.

"If we can just get .XXX percent of those markets this would be a profitable endeavor for us."

Exactly, you don't always have to be a market leader to have a profitable product line. This one just didn't work out.

I like the Personal Systems Group spin off. I think they are giving up on WebOS too soon, its a great mobile OS and I think they could use it in the cool devices.

However, HP really needs to focus on their strengths and quit dabbling in stuff that they aren't good at.

Go get those giant enterprise contracts for servers, storage, and services and keep pumping out ink.

I am a very devoted Android users but it is quite sad to see that HP is killing off webOS.
If HP licenses the OS to other OEM's, things might get interesting but who knows.

Soon it will just be Apple and Android. RIM is declining, fast.

RIM should buy up WebOS... they make the best hardware bundled with the worst software.

best hardware? how? They finally decided to drop BES support in one of their latest phones for activesync (should've done this in the first place)
    QNX will be interesting

BES is the only reason blackberry is still relevant. Not having BES on their first QNX is going to be a big mistake. Just like releasing a half baked tablet. If the playbook had built in BES support, it would sell pretty well right now.

Apple collects another head for its mantle. HP thought it could compete with Apple with in the Tablet arena.....FAIL! Google may be cutting Android's throat by getting into the Hardware business. How soon before those Android licensees begin to wonder if Motorola gets the Superior builds, timed exclusives, and support of the Android OS?

HP will probably sell or license WEBOS to HTC, Samsung, LG, or some other phone manufacturer. They could even have multiple vendors. And guess whose share that would eat into? Android.

Wrong! Why would any manufacturer want WebOS. Then they would have to maintain it themselves. HTC, Samsung, and others will stick with Android and Windows. All Microsoft has to do is build a good secure backend solution to make windows phone more enterprise friendly, to essentially take Rimm's market share from them. From there, they could easily start gaining market share on Google and Apple if they have comparable functionality. Exchange server is Microsoft's ace in the hole and they don't realize it.

The Playbook doesn't have BES support?

    RIM how stupid are you?

I guess I should keep up with these things more like I used to.

WEBOS is better than Android OS.....period. It suffered from Bad hardware. Why wouldn't a company want something different that the thousands of Android devices.....all which are basically the same. Can you really tell me the difference between the Droid Incredible, Droid 2, Thunderbolt, Droid this and that......etc...? HTC is doing basically cookie cutter phones...which dilutes EVERYTHING Android.

Long term the smartphone will become a commodity product like tvs, radios, cell phone, computers etc. Its about all about the software.

Very stupid!!!!! They should have stayed out of the tablet business and focused all their efforts on QNX on the phone to protect their business. Instead, they spent all their time and money on a tablet that doesn't sell while watching their market share get taken away from them. If they don't figure stuff by next year on the phone side, I would short sell their stock.

All Microsoft would have to do with windows 8 is offer an Exchange version with built in sync software and they would kill off Rim and take their market share.
