Add to that a lot of the educators that lost their jobs would be the math, reading and science tutors that provide additional help to struggling students. And next year may even be worse, as some districts are set to lose even more money.
We have a huge deficit coming up and are 26th among the 50 states in terms of employment. We have an abysmal track record on education. New York with its high taxes and stiff regulation still has a lower unemployment rate. You can argue the main reason we didn't suffer is due to Texas never really having a housing bubble. The other that really saved Texas was the fact we don't have some of these ridiculous pensions that other states have.
For the most part, I agree. However, about education, I personally believe it's more personal issue than a state one.
I didn't know Austin had a lot of oil. http://kutnews.org/post/austin-gains-jobs-april-led-leisure-and-hospitality Unemployment in the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area dropped to 6.5 percent in April from 6.8 percent in March. Most of the gains in the last month were in service industries. “Austin gained 2,200 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities [sector], reflecting that statewide increase,” Texas Workforce Commission spokesman Lisa Givens told KUT News, “As well as leisure and hospitality, which saw 2,500 jobs added over the month in Austin.”
I know people aren't supposed to take speeches seriously, especially campaign speeches, but surely even Rick Perry noticed this conflict when he said these words? Surely? Is the injustice he's mentioning that people pay any taxes at all?
What happens when Rick loses at whatever stage he loses? Back to being governor I assume? Something about the ability to take massive amounts of time off, run a campaign for something else, lose, and then just settle back into your old job of power and personal wealth creation seems stupid to me...
Much like the internet boom effected Bill Clinton, the exploitation of the Eagle/Ford, Barnett and Haynesville shale plays have buoyed the Texas economy . It has put billion and billions of dollars in play for land owners, exploitation companies, drilling and service companies and all the doctors, lawyers and services these people can pay for. There is never any more crazy money thrown around than when people are creating a brand new industry.
The translation is: Why should you pay any taxes if the dark and the poor are not paying taxes and are instead stealing from you?
This Texas economic exceptionalism argument has to stop. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/opinion/the-texas-unmiracle.html?_r=2&src=ISMR_AP_LO_MST_FB
Please tell me Rick Perry is going to resign as governor of Texas so he can go try to ruin our country instead of just one state.
