Going to start my campaign for Bogey/5th OF spot a little early....like now. I wonder if Chris Wallace might not get some time with the big club now that Castro has been ruled out for the year?
Bogusevic is a total non-prospect. Even if you want to be extremely optimistic, by the time this team is relevant again, he'll be in his 30s so his speed will be on the decline and he already has shown no signs of being a power hitter. So you'll have a 30-something year old corner OFer with declining speed and no pop. The only justification for him getting playing time at this level over the next few years would be if we had no better options, which may be the case in the near term.
I don't think Wallace will get any run in Houston this year. He started the year in Lexington and is playing good, not great with CC. Also remember Ben Heath started great last year, and is now struggling in Lexington.
Which is why he should have Jason Michaels' spot next season. He is a bench player, and not going to develop further. For now he gives you a LH bat that can play either corner, has good speed, and can even play some 1B.
Agreed. Short-term, fine. I just get the sense that r934 thinks he has more potential than being a stopgap.
Maybe he can pitch again too... even then he's pretty much worthless on any other team other than the worst in baseball.
I've kept repeating that I want him as a 4th or 5th OF, where do you get I want anymore from the guy? He is a backup at best, no expectation of him being even Rick Ankiel. That said, I do want him playing right now. No one better that should be blocking him.
Personally, the only players I care about are those that could impact the team 4 or 5 years from now. I couldn't care less what they do with a player like Bogusevic.
Do you guys think the experience Lyles is getting this season is worth potentially making him arb-eligible sooner when we're relevant again? Would it have hurt his development to spend at least another season at AAA? Might it have even been better for him, financial considerations aside? The arb-eligibility stuff may change in the next round of labor negotiations but as of now, they are what they are. So, was it worth it?
I've been making the best of it and enjoying seeing him pitch but I didn't agree with the move from day one. I seem to be fairly alone in that stance though - around here at least. At the end of the day, it isn't a huge deal but I don't like seeing any moves made that aren't beneficial for when this team might be relevant agian. Didn't like not moving Barmes while his value was up and demand was there either. Even a relatively minor deal like that can be helpful. The Indians turned Casey Blake into Carlos Santana. Extreme example but we need to take advantage of every opportunity to make up for mistakes.
Lets say the Stros get their act together, some of these young guys produce at a greater rate then expected and Crane adds a key FAgent or two. If these 5 months of experience help in the development of Lyles and helps us contend sooner then it was worth it. If the Stros continue to bumble and stumble then it may comeback to bite us in the ass five years from now...worry about it then. Then again, Crane may just lock him up in a few years and all this will be meaningless.
I was for it definitely since we needed something to look forward too. We were sucking balls at the time and I was all for calling Lyles up ; financial considerations be damned. In hindsight, which obviously we didn't have before... Lyles looks like he certainly could have used AAA experience. It's easy to forget he's the youngest player in the majors and barely 20 years old. He could spend another year or so in the minors and have an incredibly long future ahead of him. Arbitration wise, maybe not a wise decision. I'm not paying the money though, Crane is
