I brought my desktop with me to Peru. No monitor though. Bought one when I got here. It's probably cheaper to take it on board or to pack it in your luggage depending on where you are going to. Went right through Peru customs with no problem. So far, so good. Will back up computer again before I leave though and take it as a carry on.
This is absurd. Mainstream dual-core notebooks with 4MB DDR3 and 320GB HDD can be purchased at sub-$400 price points. Save yourself the trouble.
people no longer use pcs anymore? I do all my image editing and gaming on it. The laptop is for work and to chat on forums when the games are going on.
If OP is doing serious video editing, he needs a desktop. Baqui99, Try to tell a Gamer to use a laptop for serious battle. Now imagine needing double that horsepower. The video card, alone, won't fit in a laptop.
I'd fedex it. Save yourself the hassle. My desktop weighs over 30 lbs by itself. I can't imagine bringing it along with my other accesories (like my 24' monitor).
I highly doubt that the OP is doing something so intensive that a laptop can absolutely not handle. Either he is working on a goddam motion picture by himself or he is doing some editing that a laptop could handle but at a slower pace. I echo the other poster Get a laptop, period.
I actually do have a laptop, but it's a dual-core with 2GB of RAM. It's way too slow, and I need something more powerful. That's why I want to bring my Desktop. I edit large full HD videos on Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, and I'm actually getting flow out of town to help film/edit commercials. I'd definitely buy a laptop if I could, but I just can't afford it right now.
He said he's doing photo/video editing, not 3D gaming. Sandy Bridge (Intel Gen 2 Core) has improved leaps and bounds over Arrandale in that regard. It has a dedicated media engine specifically intended for those tasks.
There is a reason desktops are vastly more powerful than laptops. Baqui99, I get you. I'm just trying to give the OP the benefit of the doubt. I can think of many ways video editing can bring a laptop to its knees as much if not moreso than 3D gaming. It depends how much rendering and effects are required. It can take hours to do that. Depends what level of needs you have.
And make sure you tell your mom ... "Mom, I made my bed and took out the trash. Remember, don't turn off my PC again, when I'm away. Oh, and thanks for the sandwiches...got to go."
