What the bear did in the story requires empathy, which according to an anthropology class I took, is strictly a human trait. Not justifying human murder-sucides because most are done out of selfishness. In this case the cubs were suffering. They can feel affection, but don't expect your dog put you out of your misery. Not even Chimps are capable of it.

What? This is 20th century thinking. More and more we are seeing evidence of other animals demonstrating empathy... especially chimps.

I'm not saying I believe this story, with regards to putting her cub out of her misery...

    ...

BUT, 10 minutes on google shows that everything else surround this bear bile industry is absolutely true... and even worse than it sounds.

I haven't been keeping up with the studies, so I'll take your word for it. A quick Google doesn't really say much except researchers are seeing signs of it, nothing concrete, at least not from non-animal activist sites.

I don't think that's true at all, especially when we're talking about parent-child relationship in other mammals.

Edit: I remember this being posted here a while back. Looks like empathy to me and this is cross-species:

Of course, animals love, protectiveness, lost, etc... but I questioning Mamma bear empathized with the cubs' pain; her imagining and relating with the suffering, and then deciding on a mercy killing.

There is no doubt that harvesting bile by killing bears is wrong. There is no doubt that harvesting stem cells from by killing fetuses is wrong.

That said, there are many drugs created from animals, plants, insects, etc. There are moral ways to do this and immoral ways.

Has bear bile been completely debunked as voodoo magic? Has stem cells? Can we call Chinese medicine stupid, yet say fetuses have magical powers?

Do you believe in acupuncture? Teas?

Can we just say the farms are evil and stupid and wrong, and not say Chinese culture is backwards, cruel and stupid, unless we know bear bile really has no contribution to medicine at all.

again...this thread makes me sick. the farms are evil. I hate it. But I'm not going to say Chinese culture is evil and stupid, either...especially when it comes to medicine.

did I just turn this into a D&D thread, by mentioning stem cell research??? :)

Bile farming sounds like a disturbing practice on more levels than one, but the rest of the story I have a bear of a time believing.

Where do you get this stuff, man?
