Morey purposely cleared the capspace instead of adding further assets through the likes of Jeffries trade. He chose this path rather than constantly adding and replacing players through trades like Isiah or Dallas. He chose to have the Rockets roster become bare in 2012, with lots and lots of capspace.

Basically you're saying Morey's an idiot for choosing a path which fans believe is the wrong one. And at the same time you're giving him the benefit of the doubt if he fails in his path.

I have given Morey a lot of wiggle room because he inherited a horrible mess. But starting next year, regardless of this season(even a non-existent one), he'll no longer have a mess. Everything from 2012 on will be 100% Morey's team. Literally every contract will be ones Morey seeked.

Why shouldn't he be held accountable for failing in a situation that he himself created?

    Bad.

I'm hard pressed to think of a single team that benefits from not playing the NBA season.

teams hamstrung by contracts that could make a run a prime free agents.

The Knicks come to mind. They would only have Amar'e, Melo and Balkman under contract in 2012-13. They would make a run and grab CP3.

Because just about every year he has set us up for a grand slam, but luck turns his setups into failure. Otis Smith is a terrible GM, but a lucky one, he is a guy who should be fired. Morey is an excellent GM, but unlucky, he should absolutely be kept.

The Artest trade was fantastic, it produced the best overall team we have had in years. If McGrady was healthy that team wins a ring.

Last years free agency, if Bosh had come to Houston, with Adelman/Martin in place, we would have been an elite level team for 3-4 years. Any luck with Yao there and you are talking 60+ wins.

In 2012, again, we have the opportunity to be one of few teams that could hypothetically sign two max guys, depending on how Morey handles the cap.

All of these setups did not come at a long term cost to the team. That is nothing but fantastic managing. One of these days, these setups will payoff and the Rockets will be a great team for years.

I did not say that at all. No fans have said anything about clearing capspace as wrong. It's like you are in a totally different thread than the rest of us.

We have young players who need time on the floor to get the chemistry they'll need to compete.

But didn't you earlier in this thread that fans believe Morey is at his best at "trade and draft" but not nearly as good in signing free agents?

Clearing capspace means forgoing trade and draft opportunities. They're as different as "tanking" and "playing to win". You can't do both. You either add salary via trades and get compensated for it, ala Scola and T-Mac trades, or you decide to let your salaries expire so you can use capspace to sign free agents. These are mutually exclusive directions a team go.

Morey purposely gave up opportunities to obtain extra draft picks and players so he can clear cap. And what's capspace good for? Signing free agents... something you believe is not Morey's strong suit.

From a players/coach stand point, the longer this lockout drags the worst, new coaching staff in town, so new ideas that need time to be established, and our players, for the most part, are young and need playing time against hight level competition, so this uncertainty might hurt more guys like Thabeet and t will.

From a DM/draft position stand point, I actually think it is good for us. I think, based on how we ended last year, that this team would not be the 14th worst team in the league this year, I think we are a 8-6 seed right now in the west (nothing to brag about).

And from a DM perspective I think it is interesting. People say that DM is at his best in trades, but IMO that is a myth. The reason why DM is a good GM is because he knows how to manage the cap, he understands what his team has/needs, and understands how and when to use his assets to get marginally better (but still better).

But his biggest ASSET right now, is cap space in 2012, and that is all you need to be in the race for the big fishes: "Yo D12, we can get pair you with CP3 in H-town, wana win??"

The biggest pro you can have from a league stand point, is the fact that if there is no season, it would be impossible for LA to land D12 (I think), that could be HUGE for us (believe).

Maybe not. As was mentioned before, Finch runs a similar system to Adelman. So there will be some familiarity for the players who played last season. T-Will had ample time to learn the system last season through practices. The only one i see maybe having a problem adjusting early on is Thabeet. But then again, he too is somewhat familiar with Finch's style of play. He actually may be more familiar with Finch than others.

First off, no one said Morey is bad at Free Agency. People say Houston (no matter what GM, has trouble attracting elite Free Agents because we aren't a contender or a glamor team like the Knicks). No one ever said his makes poor FA signings, just that the elite FAs don't choose the Rockets, independent of Morey's persuasiveness.

second, clearly cap space is good independent of free agency. Capspace also helps you make trades. So, when you say clearing capspace means you're putting all your eggs in Free Agency, you are wrong. That does not mean Morey only has one Plan....as you insist.

Morey always has multiple plans. Haven't you learned that. The notion he has one plan is silly.

The problem is not "The system", the problem is every single detail that will be different.

Even if McHale implements every single principle of Adelmans offense, and if the defense has the basic aspects as before (did we play defense last year?), it will still be different.

In sports there is no such thing as a system that every single coach runs, there are basic principles priorities that are core to how a team plays, but every single coach that agrees with those principles will add his touch to it (and those are ultimately what differentiates good to great coaches).

That is the main reason why IMO it was very important for McHale to have a brief contact with our big guys (specially) before the lockout, because I am pretty sure that he talked about what he will demand from the big dudes in regards to dominating the paint and bringing confidence to our perimeter guys to play defense on the perimeter knowing that they have their backs covered.

    **** I didn't realize a lockout counts as a year for FAs.

That sucks, especially considering we could prbly pry away CP3 plus Okafor if NO decides to trade Paul, similar to what happened to Deron Williams.

If the entire season was missed, I would presume any collective bargaining agreement would include a clause extending every contract an additional season. The draft would be more difficult to predict. Perhaps a league wide lottery with each team getting a number of lottery balls equal to its draft order the prior season (discounting those teams with multiple picks each round).

-It will be extremely bad for the 2009 draft bust class (Hill, Williams, Flynn, Thabeet). Those 4 guys are in trouble if there is no season to prove themselves on the court. I would tend to bet that if this happens the Rockets would not pick up their qualifying offers and allow them to become free agents where they would all get offered peanuts if even that.

-The Vets would be ok, some players like Scola & Hayes (if resigned) might be a little bit older and out of shape, but I think they would be just fine given their work ethic. Lowry, KMartin, etc. would be well rested and ready to go in 2012.

-Budinger and Lee will both get resigned to smaller, but reasonable contracts. Would guess between 3 and 5 mil a year.

-Patterson, Budinger, and Lee should find somewhere to play this season to continue to improve. I expect Patterson in his third year to be a complete beast physically and have a ridiculous skillset.

-Dmo, Morris, and Parsons just need to play somewhere this season to get better. They will get a shot at training camp next year no doubt and all should get offered similar contracts that they would have got last season.

Although bad, I'd say this is the best time to have a lock-out (for a team like the Rockets). It would be much worse if we're contenders.
