In context, I think he means because Cushing is WAY behind. Have you seen the comments that have been flowing today and yesterday on twitter from coaches and people watching practice? Cushing seems to be completely lost and out of shape.

What I have to wonder is, if Kareem loses his starting job...does he ever rebound (here)? Tends to devastate careers. He's been so bad, I don't know that you'd even put him in dime packages.

He was a first round prospect! That matters!

I think that's for the Jets and not the season opener.

He lost 10 pounds...I think it's more conditioning than actual fitness.

Every year we hear about who's looking great in camp and who's not, and it all goes out the window once the season starts.

Some guys coast through camp and know when to turn it on to be ready for the season. They have to save themselves so that they can go 100% all season. Other guys need to go all out in camp to get the repetition in to be sharp for the season. It's impossible to judge everyone on the same scale. That's why you can't take these reports to seriously ... some guys just aren't going to go all out right now.

I suspect that next year JJ Watt will not get this much buzz with his 'high motor' because he'll tone it down. It's understandable that a rookie wants to prove himself, but I don't take ANY stock in him being 'unblockable' right now. He's going against guys like Winston and Duane Brown, both of whom are veterans and I can probably assure you aren't at game intensity in camp.

I think Watt can be a solid player but I don't want to get my hopes too high for him. Same thing for being down on certain guys. At least wait until the preseason games before getting to up or down on guys.

I hear you DHRocket. I'm a bit concerned about Cushing, however: he has something to prove it would seem, as his play last year was a definite downgrade from his one monster season--a season which he played "overtrained".

    on Cushing:

Lastly, here's a funny segment. For background, John McClain made some comment on twitter about Leinart throwing his first incompletion of camp.

Edit: Also it appears that McClain is referred to as "pancakes" by several people who follow Braddock.

Good post. I think that's what's going on with Kareem. He just paces himself in camp.

there is some truth to what you say but on the flip side, do you think a veteran wants to get beat by a rookie? I do think that these guys competitive juices are flowing, especially since this is a short camp.

I disagree 100% with the way Kareem played last season he is the last guy on the team that should be "pacing himself" in practice. To me he looks and sounds like the worst corner that has ever played. I think the scouts who said that he was "NFL ready" needs to be fired. He was the main target on the worst secondary in "NFL history." You can't teach speed, and you can't teach clumsiness, and if those are your two weaknesses there is no reason you should be a starting corner. The guy IMO wasn't even the best corner on his Alabama team it was Arenas. Unless the QB is pressured every pass Kareem doesn't belong on the field.

Haha! Of course, there is a difference between pacing yourself and just simply not having the ability to get to another level to begin with. That is looking more and more like the problem with KJ.

I think for a guy like Eric Winston, in his 7th NFL training camp in 100 degree heat (and 300 pounds), he's going to be more apt to take a few plays off in which JJ Watt might get the best of him, in order to pace himself so that he can make it through the practice, and more importantly make it through 17 weeks of the season.

    LOL

It's high time General gets jeered and ridiculed openly at all public appearances in an effort to oust him from the Chronicle and the Houston sports scene. Similar to the Cheetos campaign at Screaming A Smith a few years back.

why does kareem fall down a lot? It's not a set up to a joke. I really want to know.
Is it bad posture? not too familiar with cb technique. I have heard of them training with mixed martial arts people to avoid being thrown off balance.

Some of it is probably footwork. His footwork is bad so when he tries to turn to run he slips. In the Roy Williams matchup he simply got manhandled by Roy and I don't think he was prepared for such physicality.
