All jokes aside, figure that mystery out. Could cause some big damage if you don't stay on top of it.
You weren't kidding. I had a plumber out here the last 2 days and he put a video camera down through my pipes this morning and found a nail in the pipe below the concrete layer under the carpet, which was causing a leak up through the carpets. He says going through the concrete inside the house is a bad idea (could hurt the foundation in the middle of the house) and suggests breaking through the driveway and tunneling under the concrete to the pipe and replacing it. Total charge = $13,000 That doesn't include hiring someone to restore and dry the carpets that have been ruined. I want to get some alternate opinions though. He said you could go through the foundation in the middle of the house, but said that was a REALLY bad idea (though would be cheaper) and said his company wouldn't do it that way and I'd have to find someone else if I wanted to do that. Jesus ****ing christ. Happy Friday to me. Anyone have any recs for other plumbers that could give me another quote???
I'd definitely get a second opinion. so your saying a pipe under foundation has a nail in it and the water is coming up through the foundation into your house?
I misspoke. The pipe with the nail in it is actually in the middle of the foundation (before it curves and gets under the foundation and into the dirt) The plumber said that the foundation won't be damaged from the water and would only be damaged by drilling or breaking through it, which is why they prefer to start in the driveway, and drill a hole until they get to the dirt layer under the foundation and tunnel to the middle of the house all the way to the busted pipe.
How old is the home? If newer, maybe it's still under some sort of warranty??? Do you have any sort of home insurance that might help cover the $13k proposal? If so, it definitely sounds like a better way to go so as not to damage the foundation and make the home worthless.
$13,000 sounds like a lot. It might be cheaper to just figure out what pipe is leaking, and run new pipe through your attic space, or somewhere else.
My dad had this problem and yeah, they went from the outside in, although they came from the side, not through the driveway. imagine a 3x3 ft tunnel under 1/2 your house. It was impressive (I have pics if anyone is super curious). Have to agree on the foundation worries if they put holes in the house, and that stuff makes an enormous amount of dust. My neighbor had to have pilings put under the middle of his house, and the holes they made to do it in the living room made a rather nasty mess.
How is the water coming up through the foundation though? Is it cracked? Did someone drive a nail through your foundation into the pipe? Not sure who or why. Foundations aren't something you just hammer a nail through. Though I believe that there may be a nail in your pipe (assuming you were looking at live pictures), I'm just not sure how water could get up through your foundation to soak spots in your carpet. Since this doesn't sound like a pressure line, I find it really hard to believe that there is enough pressure to push the water up through the foundation and into the carpet unless the drain is severly clogged. Even then, I think it would just back up for it's release. In summary it would take a lot of pressure to get water up through a foundation that wasn't already severly damaged.
Today I discovered the same right outside the door of my 2nd story bathroom. I have 1 wet spot in the carpet that is about 6 inches in diameter. Do you guys think it might be a pipe leak?
Nail in the pipe??? Get a freaking second opinion. And when you do, DO NOT tell them you are getting a second opinion. Do not tell them about some supposed nail.
13k? go to home depo, they have plenty of house fixing experts for cheap. They try jump in by the dozens so be careful.
I had an issue with wet carpet outside of my bathroom before. It turned out that there was cracks in the caulking in the shower and the water was leaking out from there. Recaulked it and everything was all good.
Get a second opinion & don't tell him he's second, then Check with your insurance company and see whats covered.
Guys....check message dates. Thread was started in April 2010. I'm all for not starting unneccesary threads, but I think a new thread would have been less confusing.
Your house is haunted by a dreaded untrained ghost dog. The only solution is to randomly shout bad dog all over the house while taking blind swings with a rolled up newspaper. I hear expensive raw steak may help appease the ghost dog if you drop one in your living room everyday for the next 3 months. Tell me your results. Cheers!
