you analogy fails b/c these "rampages" are clearly not indiscriminate - they are attacking white people and shouting racial slurs while they do it. especially considering that they are making racial slurs while assaulting white people.

Refute what? That black people commit crimes, and that they have access to social media(not refutable..certainly true) or that there's a festering racial crisis due to the growing and ever-present threat of twitter gangs of blacks that are out to attack whites and their families (not worthy of dignifying with a response) I think you'll find a lot more traction for idea 2 over on stormfront...I'm sure this is a popular idea over there. Talking about imminent race wars on the internet =/ not my cup of tea.
Speaking from a colored perspective (yay for bringin back words from the pre-80s), there's definitely an increase in these sort of crimes over the past year. Here in Chicago, we've had similar situations occurring throughout the summer. The police and Rahm have done a good job of keeping it on the down low, but the word has gotten out...we had mob jumpings earlier in the summer and one of the city's biggest beaches was closed down and evacuated for "heat conditions" when eye witness reports said the scene looked more like what's being described in Wisconsin right now. Huge army of blacks vs whites. Scary situation. The police supposedly intervened, threw a media blackout on it and the situation was suffocated. When I heard this happened in WI, I wasn't surprised at all. The Philly event surprises me, because I thought the situation was more of a midwest one. Similar events happening across the country are definitely a cause for concern and greater scrutiny into the communications amongst people on twitter, facebook, etc. Although with the news that the London riots were organized via blackberry, it's a difficult problem to conquer. With the rise in the ease of communication and anonymity, it's much easier for crime to occur. As much as I hate having freedoms trampled upon with court cases and legislation cracking down on privacy, I can at least understand a bit of where it's coming from when idiotic things like this happen. Another point that concerns me is the lack of outrage in the black community...no one wants to step up and condemn these events, instead turning the victim card out and deflecting any blame. I even saw a couple of people and urban news websites attempt to showcase the flip side of the coin by showing an example of 2 white kids beating up on an older black gentleman in Mississippi or Alabama somewhere a few weeks ago. 2 kids in a hate crime incident in the south vs. major mobs in major cities are completely different issues. Of course the cause can be attributed to a variety of things, growing unemployment, increasing poverty gap, lack of funding to schools, etc etc but the fact of the matter is that it IS happening, it HAS increased and it is NOT ok. I personally think a part of it is attributed to the economy/unemployment. The black community fights everyday for equality in the workplace and statistically speaking the ratio of unemployed white/employed whites is probably much smaller of a gap than in the African American community. The larger gap would lead to larger problems IMO, and could be a factor in this growing problem. I wish people would deal with the reality that we live in rather than the politically correct bull***** reality that they'd like us to live in. /end rant

i'm confused by your response sam. are you denying there are mobs of black youths attacking whites, or that said mobs are using social media? if the latter, perhaps you could explain why that's relevant? the reality is, it's happening sam, neither I, nor the national desk editor of the Times are making it up. the more salient question is, why are there black mobs attacking whites across the country? btw, much of the ongoing rioting in the UK (no longer confined to London) is being organized by Blackberry Messenger, a fact widely discussed on such noted right-wing blogs as TechCrunch, Engadget (both owned by AOL, and which are run by the Huffington Post Media group- i think you're probably aware of their editorial stance), Gizmodo, Slashdot, and GigaOm.
