Texans have some serious competition at WR. All three UDFA's (Jean, Tolliver and Maehr) are looking deserving of a roster spot.

Would not bother me at all too cut JJ and use that money on Ty Warren or a FA NT.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak:

(on the first week of practice) "I think it's been very good. I could say there have been interesting dynamics, as far as training camp, because of who we had and how long we had each group, but now it's kind of settled down and it's pretty much the same guys every day. I think with the amount of time we've had, I feel good about what we've done. Obviously, I wish we were a little bit further along, but I think everybody's in that same boat. We'll just keep going day-to-day and we'll get to test ourselves, starting next week, each week."

(on what he will be looking for in practice next week) "The number one thing I wish would happen is I wish we had these offensive guys on the field working. That's been disappointing because you can have all the guys you want on paper, but they need to work together and play together. With (RB) Arian (Foster) going to miss some time now and (WR) Andre's (Johnson) missed some time; (WR) Jacoby (Jones) missed a lot of time, not his fault by any means; OD (TE Owen Daniels) missed a day. We need that continuity. We need to get on the field and get better. We've got to replace (FB) Vonta (Leach); we've got to replace the things (WR) David Anderson did for us, so we need that continuity, but I'm hoping that starts to pick back up next week."

(on whether people underestimate the offense's need for practice time after last year's success) "Oh, believe me, I remind them. They did some good things last year; that's last year. You don't ever stay the same in this business. You're either moving forward and getting better or you're stepping back. We've got a good group and I like the way our guys up front have worked, and they look very solid. Our tight ends look solid, but it's about putting the whole group together and everybody being there to work for (QB) Matt (Schaub). We'll be smart; we're not going to throw somebody out there who's not ready to go, but boy, I sure would like to get them all back out there."

(on whether any more players got sick today) "Yeah, (G) Kasey (Studdard) has been sick. The young man, (DE Zane) Parr, the rookie free agent that was not at practice this morning, he got sick on us. It seems like we're a couple of guys a day, so hopefully it settles down here."

(on RB Derrick Ward leaving the morning practice early) "I think Derrick (Ward) was just spent. He was not feeling good this afternoon, so we did send him home. I think we've kind of been lucky, actually. Even though we've missed a few guys, they've come right back and practiced the next day, so hopefully that stays the case."

(on when he'll begin making decisions about playing time against the New York Jets) "Boy, I'll tell you, it'll probably be as late as it's ever been. I think we'll be sitting up here Saturday night as coaches having a pow-wow, saying, 'OK, we think this guy is ready to go,' or 'Is that guy ready to go?' It's another interesting situation that's totally different than what we've dealt with in the past. The key is that we're ready September 11. That's the most important thing, so we've got to do right by all of those players, so how much we go in the first preseason game is still up in the air."

(on whether the heat and lack of team-organized offseason conditioning work has contributed to the rash of illnesses on the team) "No, I don't think so, because there have actually been some other people in the organization with the same issue and they haven't been out there practicing, so I'm not going to blame it on the heat. I think it's just something that we have to deal with. It's always something, but that's our job, to figure out a way to deal with it."

(on QB Matt Schaub's role as a leader on the team) "He's not that way publicly, but he is on the field. He's a leader and a very confident young man in what he does. I think this season is going to tell you what a great job he did, in my opinion, because he was the glue that held everybody together away from this complex this offseason and had a great group of guys working out. You look around the league and it seemed like there were quarterbacks leading the way, and I don't have to tell everybody he did that for us."

Injury cut short Ben Tate's rookie season before it ever got going in earnest. Now he's looking to make up for lost time

It's a dream so many college football players have — getting drafted and signing a multimillion-dollar contract. And once there, battling with other rookies for a roster spot in training camp.

Delivering a stellar performance during preseason. Earning significant playing time as a rookie. Playing that first professional game. Becoming the starter as year two rolls around.

That was almost the story for Texans running back Ben Tate. General manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak planned for Tate, a 2010 second-round pick, to compete against Steve Slaton and then practice-squad running back Arian Foster.

The football gods, however, disagreed, revealing what they had in store for the former Auburn standout in the preseason opener last Aug. 14.

As Tate took a handoff, he burst through an open lane for 12 yards before being dragged down by Arizona's Daryl Washington. That night, what initially started out as a dream coming true, quickly turned into a nightmare.

"I knew that I broke something," Tate said of the fractured fibula and torn left ankle ligaments. "When the doctor squeezed on a certain point on my leg, on the sideline, it cracked.

"He told me I needed to get an X-ray."

The injury sidelined Tate for the remainder of the season. After rehabilitating his ankle, Tate is good to go in camp this year.

"He's mended well," said running backs coach Chick Harris. "You can see his speed and quickness. He hasn't lost it. It seems like Ben has been doing good work in the offseason because he is in good shape."

Change in pecking order

But now, Tate finds himself in an unfavorable position. He's no longer battling against Foster for playing time. He's battling to stay off of the practice squad.

"Being where I'm at, buried at the bottom of the depth chart, is OK with me because I was hurt and didn't play last year," Tate said. "The coaches aren't going to give me anything. I'm going to work hard every day and fight my way back to the top."

The odds are stacked against Tate, though. Veterans Derrick Ward, who the Texans brought in last season, and Steve Slaton are second and third, respectively, on the depth chart behind Foster.

"Last year at this time, we had no idea who … our back was," Kubiak said. "Right now, we think we've got too many. Let's just let them all play and see what happens."

Harris said the competition is two-fold. It's a chance for Tate to show the coaches his resiliency and develop confidence for the young back because it's going to bring the best out of him.

"He has to believe in himself," Harris said. "We drafted him in the second round, therefore he has ability. And he knows that."

Despite everything that has happened, Tate remains optimistic about his situation and doesn't regret anything.

'Different perspective'

"Everything happens for a reason," he said. "It's funny saying this now, but I thank God for the injury. I got the chance to see how much I loved this game due to the amount of work I put in to come back."

Tate thinks he has learned the true definition of hard work and that it will pay off for him in the future.

"I'm blessed to be out here," he said. "I don't take it for granted anymore. I have a different perspective now."

I was at open practice and Tolliver and Jean were so tall. I saw Tolliver try to hang by the cool guys AJ and Arian when the scrimmage drills were going on. You're forgetting Tristan Holliday too, he must be showing something.

Trindon Holliday looked pretty solid to me today. He got a ton of reps as a punt returner as well.

Foster clarifies injury

After declining to speak about his strained hamstring Friday, running back Arian Foster met the media after Saturday's morning practice and said it was no big deal.

The NFL's defending rushing champion pulled up lame on his first carry in a full 11-on-11 drill and is out indefinitely.

"I was probably going a little bit too hard, feeling good being back on the first day, but that's part of life," he aid. "You have to roll with it. Hamstrings are part of the business."

Foster said he "popped" a hamstring in the Senior Bowl and "then I tweaked it in training camp my rookie year" but added the recovery time was "about a week. I think any time you have a hamstring injury you have to rest it. That's the only thing that can heal it, so that's what we're doing now. It's a muscle, a soft-tissue injury that will heal eventually."

Kubiak impatient

Coach Gary Kubiak said all the NFL teams are behind because of the lack of offseason contact with the players, but that doesn't make him feel any better about his Texans, particularly with the injuries to Arian Foster and Andre Johnson (dislocated finger) that are keeping them out of practice.

"You can have all the guys you want on paper," Kubiak said, "but they need to work together and play together. Arian's going to miss some time now. Andre's missing time. (Wide receiver) Jacoby (Jones) missed a lot of time (waiting for the collective bargaining agreement to be ratified). O.D. (tight end Owen Daniels) missed a day (because of the flu). We need continuity. We need to get on the field and get better. You're either moving forward and getting better or you're stepping back.

"We've got a good group, and I like the way our guys up front have worked. They look very solid. Our tight ends look solid. But it's about putting the whole group together and everybody being there to work for (quarterback) Matt (Schaub)."

Heat casualty

With Arian Foster out with a hamstring injury, Derrick Ward moved to the front of the line at tailback Saturday morning, but the heat took its toll.

The eight-year veteran had to leave the field and didn't return for the special-teams practice.

"I think Derrick was just spent," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He was not feeling good this afternoon, so we did send him home. But I think we've kind of been lucky, actually. Even though we've missed a few guys, they've come right back and practiced the next day, so hopefully that stays the case."

Owen Daniels returned after battling the flu bug on Friday.

Rackers competing

This time a year ago, Neil Rackers was the outsider, trying to beat out longtime Texans kicker Kris Brown.

Now Rackers is the incumbent, coming off one of his best seasons with no one trying to take his job. But he insists he's competing.

"I'm always trying to win a job," he said. "I look at it like I'm competing with the 10,000 people out there who'd like to do what I'm doing."

Rackers kicked field goals under simulated game conditions for the first time Saturday morning and looked sharp.

"This was my first time behind a line in seven months," he said. "What I enjoy about coach (Gary) Kubiak and (special-teams coach) Joe (Marciano) is we do a lot of game-type situations during practice. That's not something we ever did in Arizona (where he played before joining the Texans). It's something that helps you get in the groove. Doing a lot of that is good for me."

Rackers is having to get to know the new punters, the veteran Brad Maynard and rookie Brett Hartmann, who are vying for the job Matt Turk held. As an incumbent, Rackers says he's doing what he can to make them feel welcome, something he learned from Doug Pelfrey, the man he replaced at Cincinnati in 2000.

"Doug took me out to eat a lot. We did things together," Rackers said. "He was a stellar guy, just phenomenal. If you make someone feel comfortable, it will be easier for him to do his job, so that's what I'm trying to do."

Rackers' position is a lonely one, but he got his "locker-room fix" over the winter at a workout facility in Phoenix, where he mingled with other NFL players on a regular basis during the lockout.

Texans' defense has crisis with identity
Names, system have been changed to protect innocents now onboard

Not quite a week into training camp, the Texans' offense is doing postgraduate-level work, even with injuries and illness creating disruptions.

The two-deep depth chart features all of three new faces, and only the fullback, with Pro Bowler Vonta Leach gone to Baltimore, is certain to be different from last year.

The defense, on the other hand, is barely finishing freshman orientation, having had no get-acquainted time over the offseason because of the labor battle. You half expect to see its players wearing "Hello, my name is … " tags on their practice jerseys. And, in addition to the upheaval in the locker room, the philosophy and terminology are new for everyone.

This is what happens when a team plays as ineptly as the Texans did last season, finishing last in pass defense and 29th in points allowed as soaring playoff hopes gave way to a 6-10 reality.

"It's a whole new defense," said free-agent acquisition Danieal Manning, the new free safety plucked from the Chicago Bears.

Added defensive end Antonio Smith: "The calls are different and the names of things are different. You have to re-teach yourself everything you've learned over your entire career. But you've got to be open-minded. You can't resist because we didn't have much success last year. This is what happens when things don't go well. You make some big changes."

What's happening in the Texans' case is a nearly total, top-to-bottom makeover. The only player listed as a starter at nominally the same position he played in 2010 for fired coordinator Frank Bush's 4-3 set is right cornerback Kareem Jackson, whose rookie season was hardly auspicious.

And just one position coach, the defensive line's Bill Kollar, kept his job. This wasn't a housecleaning. This was a tear-down.

Wade Phillips, Bush's replacement, has earned a Mr. Fix-It reputation almost everywhere he's gone. He brought with him back to Houston, where his NFL coaching career began in 1976, the 3-4 defense he first deployed 30 years ago this summer as a rookie coordinator under his father, Bum, in New Orleans.

Asked if the Texans are his toughest rehab project, Phillips smiled.

"You usually get hired because things weren't going too well before you got there," he said. "It's the same kind of challenge here as everywhere else I've taken over. I think we started five rookies that first season in New Orleans."

It appears the Texans will start only one, top draft choice J.J. Watt, at left defensive end. But Mario Williams and Connor Barwin are "rookie" outside linebackers and Glover Quin is a "rookie" strong safety. These are major transitions.

New responsibilities

Just ask Quin.

"As a corner, you're mostly just playing your receiver," he said. "As a safety, you have to play tight ends, you have to read the run game, you have to read the passing game, you have to cover bigger bodies. You've got to make your reads quicker."

Defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, in turn, is adjusting to playing full time at nose tackle, the fulcrum in the 3-4. And outside linebacker Brian Cushing has moved inside, where he'll share turf with DeMeco Ryans.

Further complications: Ryans is coming off a nearly lost season after he tore an Achilles' tendon early; Cushing is rehabbing following off-season knee surgery. It could be a while before they're on the field together, although Cushing is expected to be 100 percent for the season opener against Indianapolis on Sept. 11 at Reliant Stadium.

In the interim, Williams is arguably Phillips' major individual project as he tries to find himself another quarterback scourge in the mold of Dallas' DeMarcus Ware.

Lots of homework

"The technique things are different," said Williams, who has studied Ware on film. "I'm really excited (about the changes), but I've got to (pay attention) in the classroom and focus on working on the fundamentals."

Three rookie draft choices — Brandon Harris, Roc Carmichael and Shiloh Keo - are vying for backup roles in the secondary, where corner Johnathan Joseph and Manning, although proven veterans worthy of big-dollar contracts, were hardly known to their new teammates - or each other - just a week ago.

"I'm kind of coaching and learning at the same time," Joseph said.

The former Bengal Joseph and the former Bear Manning are making a strong impression on their new teammates.

"Those guys are playmakers, and that's what the coaches brought them in for," Jackson said.

Means to an end

J.J. Watt took a chance by walking on at Wisconsin, but the decision led to his dream, a chance to compete in the NFL

J.J. Watt wasn't regarded as one of ESPN's top 150 prospects in high school.

Big-time universities didn't break their necks to offer him scholarships. And the 6-5, 290-pound Pewaukee, Wis., native wasn't even recruited for defensive end.

But none of that concerned Watt. He just wanted to play football. So Watt signed his letter of intent to play tight end for Central Michigan.

While there, things got worse. In 14 games, Watt finished with modest numbers, catching eight passes for 77 yards. Still holding on to a dream of playing in the NFL, Watt took a leap of faith.

The following season, Watt transferred to Wisconsin, where he found himself as a walk-on fighting for a roster spot at defensive end. The decision changed his life.

He received a scholarship and in just two years as a starter for the Badgers walked all over the Big Ten Conference, compiling 106 tackles, 111/2 sacks and three forced fumbles.

"The key to my success has been working hard each and every day," Watt said. "I can't take plays off. Every single play I need to give it 110 percent.

"Dream big and work hard, that's something I've lived by since high school. It's the epitome of what I'm all about."

Watt carries that type of mentality on the football field, which is the reason his Texans teammates are gushing over him.

Peer praise

"He's a dog," said Antonio Smith, starting defensive end opposite Watt. "He's got some quickness, he's got some power, he plays with leverage, good hands and he's got some of the raw talents that you would need to be a great defensive lineman in this game."

Watt is used to working for everything he's received. At Wisconsin, he basically auditioned just to make it on the scout team. But since day one, the 11th overall pick has been penciled in as the starting defensive end.

And he's made the most of it. During 11-on-11 drills, Watt has been active, using a combination of strength and quickness to make plays. He even batted down a few of Matt Schaub's passes at the line of scrimmage.

"He's come in and really accepted the (starting) role," said Wade Phillips, defensive coordinator.

Watt said he's managing the pressure one day at a time. The various pass rushing, footwork and hand placement drills have helped him polish his skill set so he can be ready when the season starts.

"I'm out here just trying to focus on improving my techniques and fundamentals every day," he said. "Do whatever I can to help this team win."

One thing he battles is the weather. Texans training camp is the hottest in the NFL. Watt said he isn't used to it, but it's no excuse to slack off.

Rookie hazards

And athough he is a starter, it hasn't excused him from traditional rookie treatment.

"We give him a hard time. Not as much, a little bit," Smith said. "J.J. carries a couple of pads, but I don't see him with no pads right now, so he's slacking."

Watt is locked in on getting after one opposing quarterback.

"(Mark) Sanchez," Watt said with a smile. "He is the first one on the schedule."

Are there any viddeos on our training camp? Like a 5-10 minute long vid summarizing the practice and all our guys putting in work, or any footage at all??

Head Coach Gary Kubiak:

(on the first week of training camp) "I think it was good. I think we'll be pretty close to everybody being on the same page when we get back to work Tuesday morning. I think our trainers did a great job and our staff just preparing for this first week, as crazy as it was with players coming and going. I think they did a nice job with the preparation. I feel good. I wish we had all that time in the offseason. I've told you all that before, but with the time we've had I feel good about it."

(on how the competition level will increase when everybody is playing) "It's already increased the last couple days. Next week, we've probably got a good four days where it's strictly on us, still battling us and competing against each other and then we lock in at the end of the week and get these young guys ready to play the Jets. Every week now, we get to get tested and find out where we are."

(on if ILB Brian Cushing will be back next week) "Yeah, like I said yesterday, our plan right now is mid-week next week. That's either Wednesday or Thursday. Hopefully he's back on the field and toward the weekend we'll see where he's at."

(on if the lockout will affect how much playing time players get) "It very well could. It'll be late next weekend when we're going to sit down and say, 'Player number one, is he ready to play?' So it's going to be a player-to-player basis. It's definitely got an affect and we got to be smart in what we're doing."

(on RB Ben Tate) "He came out, warmed up and said his hamstring was tight, so we moved on. Derrick (Ward) was back. That group right there has been impressive the last couple days in their work habits and getting the reps that they're getting. Hopefully he's back later on."

(on if he's concerned about only having three healthy running backs) "Tuesday, we'll come back with four. I don't see any reason we don't. Arian (Foster) is going to be day-to-day so I don't know. Is it a concern? I think once we start playing, it's not. That's plenty of guys to go around. It's fun to watch. Steve (Slaton) is having a great camp. (Chris) Ogbonnaya is having a hell of a camp. It's just fun to watch right now because those guys are getting so much work. They're not sitting there or standing. It's funny, you can show up one day as the fifth guy and the next day you're the third guy. It's just fun to watch them grow up."

(on QB Matt Leinart) "He's really impressed me the last couple days. There's no panic in Matt (Leinart). That's a big challenge when you're taking the second offense against the first defense. Matt just plays the game. He throws it where he's supposed to throw it. He's got a lot of confidence right now. I'm excited for him. I think his career's going to take off again and I'm excited for him."

(on OLB Mario Williams) "I'm watching him. He's mad at me today because he had a couple sacks and we let the ball get thrown. I let him know after practice I saw him."

(on where the team is behind without the normal offseason) "Volume of what you're teaching. You're behind from that standpoint. Defensively, Wade's (Phillips) had this football team for six days. That's unbelievable and they've done a hell of a job. Offensively, I think our timing is not where it should be. I think some of that stems from us not working together. When you're not working with Arian (Foster) in there and Andre (Johnson) missed a week basically, that affects you and what you're doing. I'm anxious to get all those guys back, but I'm sure everyone else has their problems too."

(on the conditioning level of the team) "I've been pleased. It's been hot. It's always hot, but it's been exceptionally hot. We've held up for good two hour practices and we're recovering well. We've had some guys sick that have battled through some things. I think our mental toughness and our conditioning level has been pretty good. Those guys that really stuck to (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach) Cedric's (Smith) program that they normally would do, to me they're really moving forward."

(on if he's pleased with the first week) "Yeah, I am. We should be further along, but we're not because we haven't been together. As I said, I don't want to be redundant, with the time we've had, it's been good. I feel good about the practice this week."

(on if the team is further along defensively than expected) "I've been pleasantly surprised with how far we've come in six days, I'll say that. We've thrown a lot at them and I feel good about it."

Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips:

(on how the defense has progressed over the first week of training camp) "I think things are going surprisingly well in that the players have worked hard in the classroom. They're working hard on the field, but I think in the classroom, they've learned a lot of things quickly and they've carried them over to the field, so I'm pleased with that."

(on the transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4 for the players) "Well, that was what we were wondering. I think they've adjusted real well. I don't see any big mistakes, I don't see guys making a lot of mental mistakes, and that's what I'm looking for."

(on free agent signees CB Johnathan Joseph and S Danieal Manning) "Outstanding. (Danieal) Manning and (Johnathan) Joseph have both started for their whole careers and they're both really good players, and they've both stepped right in."

(on being back in Houston, where he played collegiately) "It's great to be back. I know Houston - the University of Houston - is starting their training camp right now, so I look forward to seeing them during the season, but it's home. This is home for me. I have family here and I have great ties here."

WR Andre Johnson:

(on going against CB Johnathan Joseph in practice) "It's going very well, a lot of competition every day out here at practice. I think we're both making each other better and we're all working to make this team better."

(on being able to practice again) "I was just excited like a kid at a candy store. I was happy to be out here running around. It felt good and I was just excited."

(on the first week of training camp) "I think the first week went well. Of course I wish we had OTAs and stuff like that, so we've had to rush the offense and stuff. I think we're improving every day as a team and we're getting better."

(on CB Johnathan Joseph) "He's a great player. That's why we brought him here. Like I said, we try to do everything we can to make each other better; we communicate a lot about different routes and things like when guys get beat on things. We just try to inform each other about what's going on so that when it comes Sunday we won't be surprised about anything."

(on his dislocated finger) "It was fine, I had it protected and I had it taped up pretty good. I came out and caught some balls yesterday and I felt comfortable doing that so, that's what made me come out and practice today."

(on if having everybody practice next week will increase competition) "I think if you look at our practice today you can tell that it was very intense. Every practice has been very intense, guys are competing and guys are trying to make each other better. Guys are maybe talking a little trash to each other but it's nothing personal it's more motivational, you know, trying to get guys going and things like that. At the same time, like I said, we are on the same team so we're just trying to make each other better so that we can play well on Sundays."

(on how CB Johnathan Joseph and FS Danieal Manning will make the team better) "That's why they're here. Like I said before, Johnathan (Joseph), he's a great player you see him make plays out here and (Danieal) Manning is a great player. He comes out here and makes plays and that's why they are here, they're here to make plays for our defense and get off the field so that we can go on the field and score more points. I think they're going to help us out a whole lot. Like I said before, I think those two transactions were the biggest free agents that we've signed since I've been here so everybody is excited and I think everyone will help us out a whole lot."

CB Johnathan Joseph:

(on if there's anything to learn in a 3-4 defense) "Just learning overall concepts and terminology of everything was the main part for me because I'm a cornerback. I'm kind of out there on an island myself and it's more important for the guys as safeties and linebackers of that nature. For me overall it's just making me a better player knowing the overall knowledge of this defense itself."

(on competing against WR Andre Johnson today) "It was a great competition. Like I said, Andre (Johnson) is the best receiver in this game and it's just a great pleasure to have him out here practicing against him every day. As a defensive unit it will only make us better."

(on if having everyone on the field next week will increase the tempo of practice) "I think it'll definitely take things to a heightened level. At the same time, you want to practice hard but you don't want anyone injured because at the end of the day these guys are going to make our team better once the regular season starts."

SS Glover Quin:

(on adjusting to the 3-4 defense) "Were picking it up. We're playing fast, we're making plays and everybody's getting the system. Everybody's buying in, everybody's communicating and it's looking really good,"

(on how the new defense has changed his role) "I'm more vocal now. I have to make calls. I have to understand what the offense is trying to do to let my corners know what's going on and let them know what to play. I'm in the box now sometimes as a safety. It's a little more responsibility but it's fun."

(on what it's like having CB Johnathan Joseph and FS Danieal Manning on the defense) "It's been great having two veterans that can come in and give some experience and talk with us and help us out and show us how to be great."

(on his first week of training camp) "For the most part, it's looking good. You are around guys that you see on TV and now you get a chance to play with them. They're standing right next to you, I mean (linebackers) Brian Cushing and Mario Williams."

(on the heat) "It's hot, the heat is ridiculous. I've never been somewhere before that's had three digits but now I'm starting to see a lot of those three digits."

QB Matt Schaub:

(on how the offense performed in the last period of practice) "I thought it was good. I thought it was good work all day. A lot of what we were doing was on the line of scrimmage, just in a no-huddle fashion; not necessarily a hurry-up until we were in the two-minute drill. But that's good for us. It creates good tempo. (It) gets the defense going when not being able to huddle, which they're going to see numerous times throughout the season, so it's good work for them. I felt offensively, we moved the ball, guys were on their assignments and we did some good things."

(on working against CB Johnathan Joseph and FS Danieal Manning) "They look good. They just jumped right in. They're veteran guys, so they know how to disguise things, how things look, so they're looking good."

(on how undrafted free agents like WRs Lestar Jean, Jeff Maehl and Terrence Toliver have looked) "They've done well. They're progressing. Obviously, it's a lot a thrown at them. The first few days it wasn't too bad. As we get into the second week, things start building off one another and it gets to be a lot. The more they can study and get in their (play)book, the better. So far, the talent is there and the skills are there and they're progressing very nicely for rookies."

(on what he will do with his day off) "Just some family time, rest and get ready for Tuesday."

(on how WR Andre Johnson looked in his return to camp from injury) "He looked good. He probably wouldn't want me to say that he got a little winded; he hadn't practiced in a few days. Just (needs) to get his legs back under him. It's Dre (Andre Johnson). He'll be ready."

(on how this week of practice went) "The week went well. Getting guys back going and getting into football, it's just good to be back and be around the guys on the field. Everyone seems like they've been working and staying ready throughout the offseason, so it's good to be back in here."

Last year, Texans running back Arian Foster played with a knee injury because he feared losing his job if he missed time. This year, with Foster suffering a hamstring injury on his first carry of 11-on-11 drills and 2010 second-rounder Ben Tate back after missing all of last season with a broken ankle, the undrafted Foster surely was concerned that the player who entered with higher expectations will have a shot at changing the name on the back of Arian’s jersey to “Pipp.”

But Tate isn’t quite ready to try to take over. Coach Gary Kubiak told reporters on Sunday that Tate wasn’t able to practice, due to a hamstring problem of his own.

“He came out, warmed up and said his hamstring was tight, so we moved on,” Kubiak said, via quotes distributed by the team. “Derrick [Ward] was back. That group right there has been impressive the last couple days in their work habits and getting the reps that they’re getting. Hopefully he’s back later on.”

Tate entered camp at fourth on the depth chart, behind Foster, Steve Slaton, and Derrick Ward. With Foster out and Slaton possibly on the trade block, Tate needs to stay on the field in order to ultimately stay on the roster.

“Last year at this time, we had no idea who . . . our back was,” Kubiak recently said, per the Houston Chronicle. “Right now, we think we’ve got too many. Let’s just let them all play and see what happens.”

In the end, anything can happen. Indeed, who would have guessed a year ago that a guy who seemed destined for the waiver wire and practice squad would end up leading the entire league in rushing?

been watching highlights of JJ Watt. that guy is a jumping machine. we're gonna see a handful of incompletions and interceptions because of deflections.
