Well, I think the sculptor accidentally switched Deion's picture with Robert Wuhl's, and 5 birth control ads in a twenty minute video clip is a little jarring, but that was decent to watch. I love that he invited Snoop and Cube, really reminds you how much a part of the era this guy really was. The best athlete on every team anyone played on back then wore number 21.
I was too young when he played to really care about football, so fill me in. This guy sounded like one of the best ever at his position (duh, he is in HOF) but why was he on 5 different teams? Usually HOFers are on 1, 2 teams max... so why 5?
He rose to become the premier cornerback in the league when he was with the Falcons in the early '90s. If you noticed a lot of football players wearing bandanas or do-rags on their heads when they took their helmets off, it seems like he either originated or popularized that. You could say that with the black Falcons jersey, black receiver gloves, towel in the waistband, and interception runback celebrations he was to football what the Fab Five was to basketball (with baggy shorts and alley-oop dunks). I think the NFL secretly hoped a few years earlier that Jim McMahon and Brian Bosworth could have brought that extra marketability to their league, but Jim was a fat drunk and Bosworth sucked. More than anything, Deion seemed to help raise the prestige of cornerbacks, receivers, and return men as the most athletic and colorful guys on the team. The 49ers signed him '94 and he helped them win a Super Bowl. Then he went to the Cowboys in '95 and helped them win one more. That was the last place he played his best football, so I think the Redskins and Ravens were just him trying to prove he could still "do it."
he was pretty good with the Redskins. It's just really sad how poor the Rush defense of those teams were that made him look bad, but the they had a season of very solid secondary with a young Champ Bailey teaming up with Sanders. The opponent yards passing per game went down to 181 per game with Deion from 247 the year before.
Also keep in mind that he played baseball for like 7 or so seasons while doing football full-time. I'm sure some teams weren't 100% comfortable with that. That and Deion went wherever paid the most after a while (see Cowboys & Redskins)
I remember that 1994 Niners team well. One of the best offenses ever, then you add the NFL's premier shutdown corner in Deion a few weeks into the season. They put up 505 points that season. Point differential was an astonishing 13.1. One of the greatest offensive seasons of all time until 4 years later when Moss was a rookie. Steve Young's QB rating that year was 112.8 I think they only lost one game with Deion starting and it was a meaningless game in Week 17 after they clinched homefield.
Deion's speech was great, I think the HOF induction ceremony is one of the most underrated sporting events on TV. Who else gave great speeches in the past? I want to look them up.
The most electrifying man in NFL history. HANDS DOWN. <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/C_w9F28Z_dc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
