Andy Serkis For Best Supporting Actor?

This is not a review of RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. That comes Friday. If you must have a taste of a review, let's just say that if you followed my Twitter feed you'd have some idea of what I was thinking when I came out of the screening yesterday. I think many reviewers felt the same way, judging from their feeds. It's going to be an interesting Friday, reading the reactions. I can't wait.

What I will say that seems to be beyond dispute is that Caesar is another amazing performance by Andy Serkis, and there's talk around the entertainment press that this may be the role that gets him a Best Supporting Actor nod. There was talk of it for Gollum back in 2002 and 2003, and even some for KING KONG in 2005. With Caesar, Serkis has done something amazing. Every thought that crosses Caesar's mind is evident in the performance, and all without dialogue. The way he moves his eyes, analyzing things, or how Caesar responds to people, whether it's a kindly old man stricken with Alzheimer's, or a brutal animal keeper, or even another chimp in a battle for dominance - it's a multi-leveled, full-on performance, and the only reason people are talking Best Supporting Actor is simple semantics - he'd never get nominated for Best Actor, not in today's day and age, not yet, even though Caesar is very much the main character of the film.

Tell you what, if I could vote for Andy Serkis in the Academy, he'd have it. It's easily the best performance of the summer, and I think come Friday you'll hear quite a few people talking about it. But is it Andy Serkis, or WETA, or a mix of the two? I think WETA worked with something that was already there. Just look at the performance of Serkis in this RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES clip, sans effects-work, and tell me he's not putting his all into that character:

I can't wait to see RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES again. And again. I went in not knowing what to expect, and... well. Hopefully you'll see for yourself Friday. But if nothing else, expect some serious Oscar talk for Serkis, and I wouldn't write it off this time. It's been talked about before for Andy Serkis, but this time? This time, I think he may very well get the nomination.

In Hollywood, humans can defeat aliens that have conquered interstellar travel. But when it comes to apes chucking spears at us...our species is screwed.

Saw this tonight. I found it excellent. Those apes are awesome. They are the real stars of the movie. Must give mad props to WETA for making them so life like.

Give props to WETA AND the actors. They have revolutionized human motion capture technology with this movie, especially with facial expressions, etc.

Amazing movie. This movie's CG/motion capture stuff was almost as big a leap forward for movie effects as Jurassic Park was for its time. Truly amazing stuff. It also helped that the movie was fantastic and didn't simply rely on the cool motion capture CG. I hope it does well enough to spawn at least one more. I want to see the next step in this story.

Encouraged by the reviews, I remember seeing the original, which I believe was the 4th movie in the original series, and thought it was underrated. I assume they took bits and pieces from that movie, like the name Caesar, but took it another direction.

Very good reboot/prequel, even though they have Franco as the star, this is Andy Serkis' movie and he's excellent along with some very impressive CGI work.

Very good. Best summer film this year. Franco is meh and Pinto is pretty to look at, but Ceaser and John Lithgow resonate emotionally.

It's actually a pretty good movie. Was going to chalk it up with being just an action movie with really no substance, but it turned out to be a well written movie. Kind of felt weird rooting for the apes though....... and I only cringed once with the blatant nod to the original.

    They already made it.

It's called Planet of the Apes.

I found the movie just ok and didn't like the ending. The CGI was better than expected though.

Great movie. Not the best I've ever seen, but I think it lived up the hype at the least.

It's actually Battle for the Planet of the Apes. It connects loosely to Conquest but if it follows the same path it will Battle with most of the humans dying off. I'm wondering though if they keep them as CGI apes or if at some point they evolve into man like apes?

I wouldn't mind if the whole series were redone without the apes evolving, but instead adopting clothes that fit their bodies as needed for climate.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Surprisingly good movie. I hated the 2001 remake - didn't think the reboot would be this good.

Yeah, I've seen the original movies. I meant I want to see where they take it in this new reboot.

Saw it and it was brilliant. For a summer movie that was had a lot of hype, this one lived up to it.

    Ceasar is home.
