Sounds like a lot of people on helicopter. I hope our next president reads some history. What was the last foreign force to hold Afghanistan?

Those soldiers didn't deserve to go out like this.

Just burn the entire country to the ground already and let's go home.

Word. Al Qaeda is done for all intents and purposes. And what could be done to fix the mistake of a war in Iraq has been done as well. One war for good reason, one war for no good reason; two wars that no longer serve any meaningful purpose at all. End them now. Not another dollar and, far more importantly, not another drop of blood (American or otherwise) should be spent on these killing fields.

indeed. this is like losing a carrier.

with the current admin not committed to anything other than a gradual draw down on a politically determined timetable, it's time to nuke the place (on ne regole pas) and go home.

they want to live in medieval times, let's give them a kick start in that direction.

The government in Afghanistan is allied with the US, and the use of a nuclear bomb would not really affect the Taliban. The only viable option for reducing casualties at this point is to withdraw our forces.

I disagree. A strategicallybpalced nuke,on the crest of the border between the 'stans might rendr that area uninhabiable for decades. That's long enough for me.

It's a terrible loss for the nation and the families of those who were killed, but that is what these men and women volunteered to do, put themselves in harm's way. When they do that, the risk is there. They know this better than anyone else. This is a blow to a crucial component of American power. Their numbers aren't great, simply because they are the best, simply because they are great, in the best sense of the word. Yet they aren't leaving us without having left a tremendous legacy, even if we won't know of most of what they accomplished until decades have passed, if ever. And their fellow men and women will take up the slack. They can't make up the loss, nothing could, but you can bet they will redouble their efforts in any task assigned them by the nation.

Having said that, why were so many in an extremely dangerous area, on what was without a doubt an extremely dangerous mission, in a helicopter decades old? Why weren't more modern helicopters used, and in greater numbers, to insure both an increased margin for their safety, and a far smaller loss of life should something like this occur? I'm surprised that a Chinook helicopter was being used. Are we so short of more modern alternatives? I find that difficult to believe. Someone "higher up" needs a career change.

All a nuke does is provide more propaganda for al-qaeda.
