I had suspected this for sometime and yesterday at the bookstore I came across a book titled History of Private Lives: Volume II. Basically, it says that knights were expected to go to war or fight other knights or would be lovers for a woman (playing games, impressing the woman's father, etc), and then take the woman he was fighting over and have sex. Sometimes the knight would have to take the woman by force. Sounds like rape. And when you think about it, the woman, during all the fighting, is expected to fall in love (have sex) with whichever man comes out on top. Since she has no say by these customs or unwritten laws, and by saying no to sex she ok's herself to be raped, so to speak. So therefore rape in a chivalrous relationship isn't rape, it is actually the man fulfilling his knightly and chivalrous virtues. I seem to remember the early James Bond movies where Bond (Sean Connery) would slap the crap out of the woman, throw her down on the bed, force himself on her and then mid-way through sex the woman would submit.
cavemen used to club a woman over a head, then carry her back to his cave to rape her. doesn't make it right.
Seriously man. It's bad when I don't even have to read who posted the link to know in this case it would be you. Give it a break man.
"Lord, please pray for the soul of this b****. And guide my pimp hand and make it strong, Lord. So that she might learn a ho's place. Amen."
What you are describing is not much different from what Elk, elephant seals and etc.. do. They fight for the right to mate and the physically strongest male gets to with the females going along with it. Cultural norms have codified that and since many societies were patriarchal women really didn't get much say in the matter. So I don't think it is so much that chivalry (as defined by a Medieval European example) led to rape but that patriarchal societies condoned and codified rape.
I knew it. Some knights were gay! Sir Lancelot: We were in the nick of time. You were in great peril. Sir Galahad: I don't think I was. Sir Lancelot: Yes, you were. You were in terrible peril. Sir Galahad: Look, let me go back in there and face the peril. Sir Lancelot: No, it's too perilous. Sir Galahad: Look, it's my duty as a knight to sample as much peril as I can. Sir Lancelot: No, we've got to find the Holy Grail. Come on. Sir Galahad: Oh, let me have just a little bit of peril? Sir Lancelot: No. It's unhealthy. Sir Galahad: I bet you're gay. Sir Lancelot: Am not.
Man, you come up with the WORST possible question and choices for a poll. I get the subject but @ the poll.
Seriously, why would you bring up Kobe in this thread? We all know he wasn't chivalrous before the rape.
