My favorite FF game along with FFX. Not surprising they're made by the same team IIRC. I hesitate to say "best" though, since I feel there are some issues. To me FF6/10 were more well-rounded.

Gameplay-wise, the system can either be considered broken or complicated. If you figured out the junction system and modding items/cards, you can make yourself invincible and OHKO everything for much of the game. If you never figure things out, the battles become drawn out and boring.

Story-wise, I find the lack of a Sephiroth/Kefka type villain was lacking, as do the convenience of the whole "they all happen to be in the same orphanage" thing. Otherwise, I loved it.

Oh, and a note about the music. LOVED the soundtrack. Best FF music ever... IMO.

FF8 is probably my least favorite of the series. I actually replayed it recently, so it is still fresh in my mind. Things that I specifically dislike about the game are:

    - The Draw system. This is just terrible because you are pretty much forced to keep drawing magic over and over until you get 100 in all the most important spells. It gets extremely boring and repetitive.

    - The Junction system. Also a big time-eater, even despite the auto functions. It takes forever to swap magic back and forth to customize things just right for each character.

    - The side-quests. They are so vague that there is really no realistic way to complete them without using a guide. I think that this was intentional on Square's part in order to generate guide sales.

    - Item refining. As with the side-quests, a guide is essential to refining the best items. Without a guide, it would literally take days of trial and error combined with meticulous note-taking to do it right. Again, I think this was intentional to create more official guide sales.

    - The absence of a strong antagonist. Seifer had a lot of potential and started out great, but quickly fizzled into a one-dimensional idiot. He could have been a great villain if they had bothered to develop his character a bit. Plus, his presence was completely undermined by how weak they made him in battle. Boss fights with him were easier than most normal enemies. The ultimate villain (Ultimecia) doesn't even make her presence known until the game is almost over.

    - The story and characters did not interest me at all. Squall acts like a dick and Rinoa is a whiny b!tch the whole time, and then suddenly they are in love without any logical reason. The other characters are simple caricatures.

    - The futuristic atmosphere. I realize and accept the fact that I am probably old-fashioned in this regard, but I vastly prefer a traditional midieval setting over a futuristic one. It's not that I can't enjoy a futuristic RPG -- perhaps my favorite ever is Star Ocean 2 -- but I just didn't dig the world they created in FF8 at all. There wasn't a single area that made be step back and say, "Wow, this is really cool!" which always happens at least once during any good RPG.

    Some good points:

    - Graphics were top notch for the time.
    - The music was mostly good. Uematsu usually creates great stuff.
    - Triple Triad. I actually like the card game a great deal. The various rule changes were very annoying, though.

Overall, I feel that FF8 was the most disappointing of all the FF games.

Really liked it, just as every PS1 FF. The PS1 really was a golden age for JRPGs. I agree that some of the characters were lazily written. Apart from Squall and Rinoa, all the other characters and even Seifer were replaceable. The music was fantastic, though. And the setting was something. I really loved Esthar.

Yup, they don't make RPGs like this anymore, Engrish non-withstanding.

Didn't like the op limit breaks or the summons or the draws, but triple triad was as addicting as chocobo racing. Having played it in my adolescence, I enjoyed every sappy ounce of that ending.

I enjoyed FF VIII, surprised people like it here, most people I know couldn't stand the drawing/junctioning system.

Triple Triad was awesome, good music too.

Yep, one of the most underrated RPGs.

FF12 is my favorite. It has the greatest depth and the level of detail they put in that game was amazing. Second comes FF9. Then 7. 8 is my least favorite. Recently replayed it and I just could not get through it.

Probably not the greatest, but a very good one. I'd put it in the top tier, but IV, VI & VII are equal if not better for me. And the fact that Zelda is an RPG (albeit very different from FF), makes it hard to call it the best. Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past, & Legend of Zelda were all amazing games.

While these games are a step below for me, they were still very fun:

    Breath of Fire series
Mana series (Did not play beyond the 3rd one)
    Paladin's Quest
    FF Mystic Quest
    Chrono Trigger
    Lufia series

She was pretty but I'd rank Tifa, Aerith, Yuna, Ashe, Penelo and even Quistis over her, not including the pre-Nomura characters.

    1) FFIV
    2) FFVI
    3) FF Tactics
    4) FFVII
    5) FFX

FFVIII does not even get an honorable mention: Weak plot, bad love story, crappy villains, crappy supporting cast.

Quistis? Hot for teacher much? No other reason to rate her higher. I'd put Rikku up there.

VIII was trash compared to VI, VII, IX and X, and disappointing next to just about any others. The story was atrocious, the characters were dull and one-dimensional, and the whole battle system was broken due to the fact that enemies leveled up as you did, but grinding out battles and drawing magic would make you obscenely overpowered anyway. You could literally beat the game without ever intentionally leveling up, just by drawing magic and getting through boss fights in which the bosses are the same level as you.

And don't even get me started on KEKEKE TIME KOMPRESSION!

So for those of you saying it is the worst in the series...

    Does this include FFXIII?

Or are we all just excluding that? Maybe a good idea.

I think Triple Triad > FFXIII.

Honestly, I couldn't get into any Morriwind at all. I got to the dungeons killing rats and I can't stand the graphics, lack of back story and CG. Plus the constant moving screens give me a head ache and is not aesthetically pleasing to me. But I agree that it's a different game for different folks.

Yes. I was at least able to finish 13. I tried playing through 8 twice and couldn't bring myself to play all the way through either time.
