Are tickets already sold out? When I go to the Texans site they only offer some season ticket packages...and Ticketmaster doesn't have any available.

I really need tickets for the Steelers game. Am I screwed? Am I forced to look for tickets on craigslist?

Would they do a 2nd rd pick for Asante? Tell Jason Allen to hit the road and have Kareem learn as a nickel cb.
If Boobiak couldnt make the playoffs with that roster then he shouldnt be allowed to even step on a field let alone coach again.

Despite wholesale additions (and hopefully upgrades) to the defense, GM Rick Smith says 'the roster is never set'

When it came down to it, Texans general manager Rick Smith faced quite a dilemma this offseason. Signing three-time Pro-Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha made considerable sense.

The acquisition would have addressed the Texans' No. 1 need during the offseason and surely bolster a defense that ranked 29th in points allowed, 30th in yards allowed and tied for 23rd in interceptions a year ago.

But as great a player as the former Oakland Raider is, he can't play both cornerback and safety for the Texans. And Smith knew that. So he went in a different direction, one he hopes will have the Texans heading north in the win column.

Tuesday, Smith addressed the media for the first time since the April 28 draft and talked about his thought process leading up to camp.

"It was an internal decision and an organizational decision that we had to make, whether or not we were going to try to maybe make the big splash," Smith said.

"And we contemplated that decision for a few days. We felt like Danieal Manning and Johnathan Joseph would come in and really help our football team and impact us the best way."

Landing both Manning and Joseph might be one of Smith's crowning achievements in his five-year stint with the team. And although the Texans have enhanced their defensive talent pool through free agency, the draft and with the acquisition of coordinator Wade Phillips, Smith isn't finished tweaking the roster.

"The roster is never set, in my opinion," Smith said. "We will continue to look, and I think there are some areas on our team that we might be able to improve depth-wise. You mention the fullback position and we've got a free agent in town today. Lawrence Vickers is here, visiting of course."

The Texans are in negotiations with Vickers to add depth after losing Vonta Leach to the Baltimore Ravens. Smith is also looking at defensive end Ty Warren and a veteran linebacker familiar with the 3-4, although nothing is certain.

Coach Gary Kubiak said the free-agent signings and the potential for other impact players to land with the team have heightened expectations for this season.

"Obviously to me, the last 10 days is what added to that in the fact that we were able to get some pieces for our defense that we knew were very important," Kubiak said. "You never know in free agency if you're going to get them or not, but Rick and (vice president of football administration) Chris (Olsen) did a great job, so that has added to it."

The lockout, Smith said, certainly helped the Texans develop a way to accentuate their assets which, in turn, made the team an attractive destination for free agents.

"We were able to really, really hone in on our plan," smith said. "Our preparation was so thorough, and then our guys executed."

Johnson not limited to leading by example
Veteran receiver embracing more vocal role with playoffs in mind

In jest, he referred to himself as "the old vet," but the tag does fit. This is Andre Johnson's ninth training camp, all with the Texans. Among teammates, only Neil Rackers (11 seasons), Damione Lewis (10) and Brad Maynard (14) have been in the NFL longer, while fellow wide receiver Kevin Walter and guard Wade Smith have stuck just as long.

One of Johnson's discoveries is that the nicks not only last longer now but they also occur more frequently than before. On Tuesday, he dislocated his left index finger during a one-on-one drill with rookie Roc Carmichael, but the injury isn't major.

It won't linger into the regular season, during which Johnson — at 30 and after a nearly decade-long playoff drought — insists he's maintaining a singular focus.

"There's nothing else," Johnson said. "I've been All-Pro, been to Pro Bowls and had 1,500-yard seasons. All it's about now is winning Super Bowls. That's the reason why I play. That's my goal.

"I'm going to do everything to help this organization get there."

This is a serious matter because Johnson, beyond his excellence on Sundays, is noted for his silence. He is quiet by nature, not loud with anything besides his statistics. He is not a self-promoter, which makes sense because he's arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL — and aren't actions supposed to speak louder than words?

Has anyone adhered to that axiom/cliché more than Johnson? Well, not anymore. He's speaking up. Johnson revealed Sunday he chatted with free-agent acquisition Johnathan Joseph in the offseason at a wedding for Fred Bennett, a former Texan and South Carolina alumnus (like Joseph).

"He just told me what a great organization it was here and how much I would like it here, the city and fans and that's what you want to be part of in this league," Joseph said.

Captivating an audience

While that might not seem like much of a gesture, right tackle Eric Winston disagrees.

"There's not a better mouthpiece than Andre to go recruit guys because he has such immense respect around the league," he said. "He picks and chooses his situations when he wants to speak about something, but when he speaks, you listen."

Not all great players are inclined to seek help or can be bothered to assist in recruiting other great players. And then there is Johnson.

"He leads by example on the field every day by how he conducts himself and handles himself as a pro, but I think he has quietly taken upon himself more of a vocal role," Winston said. "He's trying to help out and trying to recruit these guys, so to speak, and try to sell the team as what he sees it as. He sees it as such an opportunity, and he sees the potential here."

'An open book'

Rookie wide receiver Terrence Toliver, a Hempstead High graduate, is already envisioning the possibilities. A long shot to make the roster by virtue of being an undrafted free agent, Toliver's odds increased when the Texans waived David Anderson. With a few more practices under his belt, buoyed by some special instruction, he's confident he'll make the cut.

"I'll learn from the best, Andre Johnson," Toliver said.

That's the point, anyway, and Johnson, to his credit, is fond of saying he's an "open book" for Toliver, second-year wide receiver Dorin Dickerson or anyone in search of knowledge.

"I remember … the way they talked about (Toliver) coming out of high school," Johnson said. "I think he's a very talented guy. I'm excited to have a young guy like that, to get to help him out and teach him a little."

Johnson: Injury no big deal

A few minutes after the afternoon practice, receiver Andre Johnson was surrounded by reporters wanting to know about his dislocated left index finger that will cause him to miss up to a couple of days of practice.

"It wasn't scary; it's just a dislocated finger," he said. "I've had worse. I don't think I'm worried about a finger keeping me from missing anything. My bone broke the skin, so it'll be a couple of days, I didn't have to get any stitches or anything like that."

Johnson was injured after colliding with rookie cornerback Roc Carmichael.

"Soon as I felt it pop, I felt it out of place, and I popped it right back in," Johnson said. "I didn't know the bone had broke the skin until I took my glove off. I really wasn't in a lot of pain. It was just more concern about the bleeding. Once it heals, I'll be right back out there."

Vickers pays a visit

Fullback Lawrence Vickers, who played his first five seasons with Cleveland and resides in Houston, visited the Texans on Tuesday. He took a physical. General manager Rick Smith continued to speak with agent Drew Rosenhaus.

"My job is to continue to always try to get better," Smith said. "We'll continue to look, and I think there are some areas on our team that we might be able to improve, depth-wise.

"You mention the fullback position, and we've got (Vickers) taking a physical now. We'll talk with him and visit with him later. We'll continue to try to upgrade our roster constantly."

Warren comes, goes

Defensive end Ty Warren, who was waived by New England, has a lot of teams checking him out, including the Texans. Warren, 30, grew up in Bryan and played at Texas A&M. He prefers to play for the Cowboys or Texans.

Warren, who missed last season with a hip injury, visited with the Texans on Monday before going to Kansas City.

"We had a good visit," general manager Rick Smith said. "I think this is a good spot for him. We talked a long time about all the reasons I think it's a good spot for him. I think he believes so.

"But he's got some options. We'll get a chance to revisit with him later and see where he is in his decision-making process. We feel pretty comfortable about where he is (physically). I'm not going to pressure him. We're going to let him make that decision on his terms."

Quin's a natural

Former cornerback Glover Quin enters his third season as the leader of the secondary. The coaches and scouts say he's making a smooth transition to strong safety.

Quin started his first two seasons at corner but moved because the coaches say they think he can become a Pro Bowl safety.

New defensive coordinator Wade Phillips wants his safeties to be interchangeable. They have to be able to run and cover and drop down to stop the run and rush the passer.

"I feel better and natural back there," Quin said. "I just feel like that's what I was born to do, but I like to play whatever they ask me to play. I'm actually working out at strong safety, so you have to know it all.

"You have to know the strong (safety). You have to know the free (safety). You have to know the corner, and you have to know the nickel to be a versatile player. It's been a good transition, and it's been fun. You just have to continue to work at it."

Mitchell's nosing around

For a 3-4 scheme to work effectively, it must have a productive nose tackle. Earl Mitchell and Shaun Cody share the nose job. Mitchell, who's in his second season, seems like a natural for the position the way defensive coordinator Wade Phillips wants it played.

"Obviously, I have confidence in myself, but I've got to keep working and do whatever it takes," Mitchell said. "It's the nature of the business. Once your number is called, all you can do is just do what you can do. I've got a job to do and a career of my own."

Houston going all out to repair leaky defense

General manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak put a priority on the team's needs for when the lockout ended. Their two most important needs were cornerback and safety.

Unfortunately for the Texans and their fans, fullback wasn't the top priority. That meant popular fullback Vonta Leach, who started in the Pro Bowl last season after clearing a path for Arian Foster, the NFL's leading rusher, would probably be gone.

Smith and Kubiak got their needs in the secondary taken care of when cornerback Johnathan Joseph and safety Danieal Manning were signed. Then they turned their attention to Leach, who played about 35 percent of the offensive plays.

Baltimore was one of five teams, including the Texans, that was interested in Leach. The Ravens recruited him like a Friday night hero making a college decision. Ozzie Newsome and Ray Lewis called him. But Kubiak called him, too.

Ultimately, Leach signed with the Ravens. He got a three-year deal worth $11 million, including a $4 million signing bonus and a $6 million guarantee.

"I wanted to finish my career with the Texans, and I have mixed emotions about leaving, but I'm excited to get to Baltimore," Leach said. "I wasn't asking for anything outrageous. I would have taken less to stay, but they said they just didn't have the money. I understand this is a business, and if they don't have enough money to keep me, I understand that, too.

"But I have to do what's best for my family. I thought my career would end in Houston. I've come from the bottom to the top, and I want to thank everybody who helped me get to where I am today."

Third-year tight end James Casey, who was Leach's backup last season, should get the first chance at the starting job. The Texans will sign a veteran free agent, too.

"It's tough," offensive tackle Eric Winston said. "It's a sad part of the business. If everybody had a $300 million cap and you could do what you want and sign everybody.

"Obviously, we had our priorities going in, and Vonta, unfortunately, won't be here. It's too bad. I wish him nothing but the best because he's a hell of a fullback and a hell of a teammate, and we're going to miss him terribly. But the show has to go on. Guys have to step up."

The Texans play at Baltimore on Oct. 16.

"It'll be fun going against Vonta," inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. "I've never had a chance to go against him. He's a beast. I've seen him crush a lot of linebackers, and now having to take him on in live action - he's going to have to bring it because we're going to bring it, too."

Lawrence Vickers, who played his first five seasons with Cleveland, could become Leach's replacement. He's a Texas native who resides in Houston.

"It wouldn't be a long commute, would it?" Vickers said.

The Texans are interested in Vickers as well as defensive end Ty Warren, who was dumped by New England. Warren grew up about 1 1/2 hours from Houston and played at Texas A&M. He missed last season with a hip pointer. He was scheduled to visit the Texans on the first day they were on the practice field.

The offense isn't the issue. Defense is. Joseph will start opposite Kareem Jackson, last year's No. 1 pick who started 16 games as a rookie and ended up second among NFL defensive backs in yards allowed.

Glover Quin, a starter at cornerback in his first two seasons and the best defensive back on the team last season, is being moved to safety. The coaches say they think Quin can become a Pro Bowl safety. He'll be paired with Manning.

Last year's starting safeties, Eugene Wilson and Bernard Pollard, weren't invited back.

There should be a lot of intense competition for the backup jobs at cornerback and safety.

Wade's move south becomes 'D' key for the Texans

HOUSTON -- It's only a 200-mile stretch of Texas highway that illustrates how one team's trash can be another team's treasure -- at least in the eyes of some.

Having spent two days in San Antonio with the Dallas Cowboys over the weekend, the big talk there was how much better the team, and especially the defense, would be without Wade Phillips.

In Houston, watching the Texans work, all anyone can talk about is how good the defense, and thus the team, can be because of Phillips.

So is Phillips bad or good? I guess it depends on what part of Texas you are in at the moment. I lean toward the good. Phillips was fired as Cowboys head coach, and the guy who ran the Dallas defense, six games into the 2010 season. His reputation as a top-notch defensive mind took a hit as last season's Cowboys gave up the most points in franchise history.

Cowboys fans lit him up. He was cooked like a nice Texas brisket by the media, who forgot that during his three-plus seasons with the team, the Cowboys had a top-10 defense. "We played some pretty good defense there," Phillips said. "We did some good things."

None of the bad talk about Phillips mattered to Texans coach Gary Kubiak when it came time to find the guy to fix his horrid defense -- and maybe save his job in Houston. Phillips had earned a reputation for being one of the league's best at various coaching stops -- including four different stints as a head coach -- and Kubiak loved the idea of going to Phillips' trademark 3-4.

"It was an easy choice from our standpoint," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "He's one of the best coaches -- period -- in this league. He's been successful as a defensive coordinator. He's been successful as a head coach. Sometimes you get knocked around a little bit. We understand that as coaches. I'm just glad we had the chance to get him." Phillips leads a Texans defense that finished last season ranked 30th in yards-per game, 31st in yards-per-play and 29th in scoring defense. The offense scored 20 or more points in 14 games, but the team finished 6-10. The Texans were fourth in scoring offense and scored 44 touchdowns to place near the top of the league. They gave up 52 touchdowns. Teams lit up the Houston secondary, which was last in passing defense. Watching open receivers catch passes for big plays was commonplace for the 2010 Texans.

"You don't want to go around all offseason and be the weak-link of the team, and that's the way it was for us," Texans outside linebacker Mario Williams said.

That's right: Outside linebacker Mario Williams. In this new 3-4 scheme, Williams is moving from down end, his position since coming into the league in 2005, to a stand-up outside linebacker. He will usually line up away from the tight end, meaning he will do a lot of rushing. The initial idea of taking one of the league's best pass rushers and training him to do something new was a little tough to gauge. But after talking with the principles and getting a better idea for the way Williams will be used, it makes a lot of sense.

Don't expect to see him going backwards too much. It isn't something he's comfortable doing, although he said he is working on it. Williams is down to 285, leaning up from 290 or so, to help with the transition. "It's an adjustment simply by standing up," Williams said. "But I will still be rushing the passer."

And dropping into coverage?

"It won't be that much, thank goodness," Williams said. "Everybody hears linebacker and thinks I'll be dropping 30 percent of the time. That's not true." Phillips said DeMarcus Ware, who filled the same role for him in Dallas, dropped maybe 15 times total last season. Shawne Merriman, who also played the spot for Phillips in San Diego, was rarely used in coverage, either. "It's really just an outside rush guy who rushes most of the time," Phillips said. "It should be a good thing for Mario. That's what he does well. They know he's going to be coming. We just have to move him around."

Williams had 8.5 sacks (lowest total since 4.5 in 2006, his rookie year) last season, but he missed the last three games because of a sports hernia. The reality is he played almost the entire season with that painful condition, but rarely said a word about it. He wasn't the only one on that defense missing time. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans missed 10 games because of a knee injury and projected outside rusher Conner Barwin went down in the preseason.

Add in a secondary that spent the year playing the role of spinning tops and it equaled a defense that couldn't get to the quarterback (30 sacks to rank 23rd) and couldn't cover. That's why the Texans went out and signed corner Johnathan Joseph and safety Daniel Manning in free agency. They will both be immediate starters and should help slow down the quarterback's release time.

"They will give us a better chance to get to the quarterback," Williams said.

The Texans also drafted defensive end J.J. Watt in the first round and he is already running with the first team at left end. Second-round pick Brooks Reed looks like a perfect 3-4 outside rusher to help spell Barwin and Williams. There is a chance all three could be on the field at times. The pedigree of the projected starting 11 on defense says they should be improved. Nine of the 11 were first- or second-round picks. The only ones who weren't are safety Glover Quinn (fourth) and defensive end Antonio Smith (seventh by Arizona). "I like what we have," Phillips said. "I think this is a good group and we will have a strong front seven to get after the quarterback. I know how to pressure the quarterback."

If the Texans can move to the middle of the defensive rankings, and the offense stays close to where it was a year ago, that first playoff berth in franchise history might be a reality.

Of course, we'll have a better idea about that on opening day. That's the day Peyton Manning, this team's nemesis, and the Indianapolis Colts come to town.

His approval rating increased slightly in my book, though it wasn't very high to begin with. He called Nnamdi's bluff and got a legit corner. If we get Vickers at a fraction of the cost of Leach it will be even better.

Though I'm not sure we would have been such big spenders in FA if not for Wade. I think Bob trusts him more than anybody in the organization right now.

He lives in Houston I think I have read. Other than that I am not sure what is the hold up. I haven't seen any other teams that are going after him, maybe Redskins.

Who knows...and as far as being in town well he lives in Houston. 610am had Rick Smith on earlier and he said there was nothing new on the Vickers front and that they want to bring him into the fold and the door is open for him. McClain seems to think he will be here. He said he thinks that because he knows Vickers wants to play here. Said that pretty definitively like he has talked to him. He predicted that we would probably hear something later today or tommorow (they were all basing this on what they were calling an unspoken deadline for free agents signing tomorrow) and that he expects Vickers to be in camp tomorrow.

Also during their talk with Rick Smith he didn't mention any more about talks between him and Vickers agent and said that much of today would be devoted to restructuring players contracts so that they can get back under the cap before tomorrow's deadline.

That's the part that makes me nervous. It's a little like DaDakota predicting a SB. Pretty much the kiss of death for it actually happening.

Anyway, it sure would be nice to be in the hunt for Asante, but I think the Eagles will want more than what we are willing to offer. But can you imagine Joseph and Samuel as our starting CB's? GOOD GOD.

It amuses me so much that McClain predicted Warren would play here for the minimum and then went out and got $10 million from the Broncos. Why would he play for the minimum? He is a damn good player.

On Vickers, I really hope he signs, but seeing as how he can't take the field until tomorrow it makes sense from his perspective to wait until the last possible minute to see what kind of money he can get.
