A veteran fullback will be signed. Most likely Lawrence Vickers. Still could use depth across defensive line and linebacker core. I think Mark Anderson is someone they also want to bring back a 3-4 rush linebacker. He showed flashes last year of being a decent pass rusher.

yeah FB def has to be deeper than Casey. I assume some LB's familiar with the 3-4 system to either make it an easy transition or to help teach the starters who aren't familiar yet..

They seem to be happy with Earl Mitchell and Shaun Cody as the nose tackles. I trust Wade Phillips when it comes to picking defensive players based on his track record. Darryl Sharpton will be the top inside linebacker reserve and the loser between the Brooks Reed/Connor Barwin will be the top reserve rush linebacker. That leaves two open spots for reserve linebackers in all likely.

Super Mario is making his move

We began by making Mario Williams out to be Superman the moment we laid eyes on him. That is, we saw him as some combination of Reggie White, Bruce Smith and Lawrence Taylor.

All we expected Williams to do was put a franchise on his shoulders and take it to places it had never been before. Along the way, he would become a measuring stick for greatness.

OK, so we oversold the kid a bit. In five seasons with the Texans, he indeed has had some spectacular moments. Those games should not be overlooked. To portray him as a bust is silly.

Williams' 48 sacks are the seventh most in the NFL since he arrived in 2006. Off the field, he has represented the franchise with dignity and class. There have been times when fans have gotten on him harshly and times when he has played with injuries that would send others to the locker room.

When the Texans finally pulled the plug on Williams' 2010 season, they essentially had to force him off the field. They told him to take the final three games of the season off, get the two sports hernias that had slowed him surgically repaired, and begin preparing for 2011.

"He is a great young man," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "He works hard. He never complains.

"He's the kind of guy you want to coach."

Yet Williams has never been the consistent, game-wrecking defensive presence the Texans hoped he'd be. He has been good, but good is not great. So here we are again, with Williams beginning his sixth NFL season and the Texans having big plans for him.

It's not fair to say the Texans' entire season rides on his performance, but it is fair to say that if he's great — that is, if he's healthy and productive - the Texans will have a much, much better chance of making the playoffs for the first time.

Williams' sixth season begins in a strange new world. Wade Phillips is switching him from defensive end to outside linebacker, so Williams found himself in a different meeting room last week and in drills with a whole different set of players on Monday.

"We were glad to have him with us," DeMeco Ryans said.

Shifty business

Kubiak said when he hired Phillips as his third defensive coordinator in six seasons that he thought Williams might be shifted to outside linebacker to better take advantage of his package of speed and size.

"But I wanted to hear Wade and (linebackers coach) Reggie (Herring) talk their way through it," Kubiak said. "The neat thing for me has been watching Mario take to the coaching.

"Watching him work in that linebacker drill today was exciting. I'm excited to watch it happen."

The NFL's 132-day lockout gave Texans coaches extra time to consider the possibilities. First, they thought about lining Williams up at defensive end in the 3-4 and then shifting him to outside linebacker in passing situations.

Eventually, they decided to start him outside - the premier spot in the 3-4 scheme - and perhaps move him inside on passing downs. Either way, the Texans are absolutely convinced Williams will do great things and they'll be able to build a defense around him.

"Yeah, I'm really excited," Williams said. "You look around the league, and most of the linebackers that get the sacks are in a 3-4 defense. The biggest thing is technique and not having any wasted motions at this point, so it can be a pretty simple formula.

"The only thing I'm worried about is getting my footwork down ... not having the hesitation. That's the biggest thing - just getting off the ball and not taking a false step.

Williams called himself "trimmer, definitely trimmer" but said he's still the same weight, 285 pounds, spread over a 6-7 frame.

"He moves as well as any linebacker we've got out there," Herring said. "He has a chance to be excellent."

Starting strong

Williams said he watched video of the Dallas Cowboys' defense, which Phillips oversaw during his three-plus seasons as head coach. While there is a long list of things to work on here at the start, he said he's excited about playing for Phillips and a team that devoted its offseason to putting more talent around him.

"I'm excited about going out there and getting after it," he said.

Casey offers more than just fallback at fullback spot
Unique traits shown at Rice should transfer to new challenge

James Casey pitched in the minor leagues before turning to college football. He once played seven positions in one game at Rice. If he'd returned for his junior season with the Owls, his coach might have acted on the idea of switching him to quarterback. Heck, for kicks, Casey threw the javelin at Rice and actually scored for the track team.

So now, after Vonta Leach's departure via free agency to Baltimore, why would anyone doubt whether Casey can play fullback for the Texans?

"I wouldn't bet against him," Rice coach David Bailiff said.

It'd be wise to listen to Bailiff, who took note of Casey's frequent trips to his alma mater's weight room this summer during the lockout. The two never shared a conversation about why Casey was spending so much time there, and Bailiff said it wasn't necessary.

"He was aware this opportunity was out there, and he's going to seize it," Bailiff said.

Casey said Monday he has gained between 10 and 15 pounds and is up to 248. His listed weight a year ago was 240, and he said the extra pounds haven't affected his movement.

Still, he concedes he isn't Leach, who excelled in the Texans' system.

"He's got to step in there and do the things we ask him to do iso-wise," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said of Casey. "Our fullback probably straight-on isos eight to 10 times a game, and a lot of times he's on the backside cutting off, doing those types of things, so that will be a big factor in James' development.

"But at the same time, we have to be smart as coaches and know what James could give us in some other areas. It's kind of give-and-take."

Casey doesn't dispute any of his coach's points, and he addressed a number of other things Monday, including adjusting to different angles from behind the line of scrimmage and navigating the scrum to reach the linebacker level.

He said that has been the hardest part of the transition, and don't forget, this is only his third year in the NFL. After spending his first two seasons primarily on special teams and at tight end, Casey is still developing. But he grew a bit irritable when asked about the contact involved at his new spot — on Sunday, tackle Eric Winston said, "You couldn't pay me enough to play that position" - and whether he can handle the abuse.

"I am a collision guy," Casey said. "That does tick me off a little when people say, 'Are you tough enough to play fullback?' I've played in the NFL two years. I'm not a soft guy. I'm not afraid of contact."

Again, ask Bailiff. Because he'd know best.

"He's a tough kid, and that's a tough-man position," the Rice coach said. "He showed how tough he was playing defensive end for us. He's strong in the hips, he understands leverage, and I know he'd devote himself to becoming one of the best fullbacks in the NFL."

If he's given the chance, that is. The Texans are interested in signing a veteran fullback, but even if someone like Lawrence Vickers signs, Casey still might end up in an ample role.

"There are some things we can do with James that maybe we didn't do with Vonta from some of James' strengths," Kubiak said. "We could be built a little different when it's all said and done, but we don't need to get in a hurry here. … James is very athletic. He's a tight end with great hands, very athletic, smart, can handle a big load.

"He could give us some flexibility, but right now I want him to settle down, learn the position, and we'll go from there."

If it sounds as if Kubiak is intrigued by what Casey can provide, it shouldn't come as a surprise. He wouldn't be the first coach Casey has impressed.

"After a week of playing fullback live, James will have adapted to it, and he'll be one of the best," Bailiff said. "That's what he did for us. Playing seven positions but master of none. But tell him what he has to master, and I'm certain he'll do it."

Texans sign punter Maynard
Former Bear to replace Turk

After watching him work out, the Texans signed veteran punter Brad Maynard.

Maynard, 37, is entering his 15th season. He spent the last 10 years with the Chicago Bears, who didn't want him back after he posted career worsts with a 40.1-yard gross and a 35.2-yard net.

Maynard replaces Matt Turk, who signed with Jacksonville last week.

Last season, Maynard put 24 inside the 20-yard line and had only fivet touchbacks.

Warren gets a chance

Veteran defensive end Ty Warren worked out for the Texans on Monday.

Warren, who was waived by New England, is coming off hip surgery that cost him last season. He was at Denver before the Texans and headed to Kansas City after his visit to Houston.

The Texans continued to be interested in fullback Lawrence Vickers, who played his first five years for Cleveland. They're looking for a veteran to replace Vonta Leach, who signed with Baltimore.

James Casey, the third tight end and backup fullback, gets the first shot at Leach's job.

"Losing Vonta is very tough," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I talked to him (Sunday) at length, and I'm happy for him. He got a hell of a contract ($11 million over three years), and he's a heck of player. He's on a good team. I'm proud of him. I'm happy for him. I wish him the best."

Expensive cheerleaders

Because the new collective bargaining agreement doesn't go into effect until Thursday — the first day of the new league year - players who were free agents are unable to practice until then.

That meant players like cornerback Johnathan Joseph, safety Danieal Manning, quarterback Matt Leinart, running back Arian Foster, receiver Jacoby Jones and offensive tackle Rashad Butler were among the veterans who were reduced to being expensive cheerleaders.

"I don't make the rules; I go by them," coach Gary Kubiak said. "That's different. That's 10 key players we had watching practice today, so it's a different dynamic I have to work with.

"We've got the biggest roster we've ever had in this league (a maximum of 90), but today we had 74 guys practicing. That's the least number we've ever had at practice, so there's some hoops to go through."

Conditioning a concern

Coach Gary Kubiak consulted with some experts about the players' conditioning. Because of the lockout, players worked out on their own and not under the supervision of the team's trainers and doctors.

The Texans practiced outside for three-quarters of the morning workout, then moved inside for the last portion. They always go indoors for the afternoon practice, a walk-through during this training camp.

"I met with doctors all offseason," Kubiak said. "Basically, we're going to work our way to a two-hour outside practice.

"We were out there for about an hour and 15 minutes today. We'll do the same thing (Tuesday). Then we'll get a little bit further, and then I think by day five, we ought to be out there for good."

Cushing on the mend

Inside linebacker Brian Cushing underwent knee surgery in January to repair a patella tendon. To be quicker, Cushing lost 10 pounds.

"I feel great," Cushing said. "I'm quicker and faster. I'm almost ready to go. It was a six-month (rehab) process."

Coach Gary Kubiak watched Cushing during both workouts.

"I liked what I saw today, watching during the individual (drill)," Kubiak said. "He's come a long way this past week. I don't think you're going to see him in the next couple days, but I don't think he's very far away.

"I don't want to put a timetable on it. He's definitely a few days away."

Running back Ben Tate, who missed last season with a broken bone in his foot, has switched to No. 44, the number worn by former fullback Vonta Leach.

Quarterback Matt Leinart has switched to No. 11, which he wore at Southern California, where he won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship.

Houston Texans

The Texans only really made two moves of note, but then that was all they needed to do. You see, they have an excellent offensive line, and a great combination of skill players on offense. They have playmakers on defense. What destroyed this team last year was their secondary. With that in mind, they went out and picked up the second best cornerback on the market, and a safety with tremendous range who doesn’t make mistakes. You don’t need to make a host of moves to turn your team into a darkhorse contender.

610 am just reported this as well. They said he was holding his right wrist or hand as he was being carted off sitting up in the cart sorta bent over in obvious pain. They said he went up for a pass and came down on it awkwardly. They didn't come off as if it was very serious.

A part of me is curious to see what Casey can do and I think he'd bring a different element to the position that we could take advantage of.. but I don't know if I want to hand him the job full time.

Vickers would be the next best thing to having Leach, and not that much of a dropoff at all, not only in on the field production but I believe in locker room presence as well!! Get er done!!
